Rainbow Quest -August.
Report Eddie Batt July 5, 2025 7:19 AM BST
We all laughed as the local lunatic would religiously put a tenner on him at massive odds.
Report Eddie Batt July 5, 2025 7:20 AM BST
Raft -Cataldi who won a Lincoln under top weight.
Report Eddie Batt July 5, 2025 7:22 AM BST
Frankel might have had more than one pacemaker -his half brother Bullet Train definitely did it a few times.
Report Eddie Batt July 5, 2025 7:23 AM BST
Which horse was bought to be a pacemaker for Slip Anchor.
Report maysoon3 July 5, 2025 8:56 AM BST
yup - august cataldi and bullet train ✔️ ✔️ ✔️

I can’t remember who was the pacemaker for slip anchor - they had a group 2/3 horse at the time called eagling but I’m not sure if he was used as a pacemaker

cataldi nearly won the champion stakes and finished in front (or alongside) raft

Doing this from memory so might be wrong but one I missed - didn’t cacoethes pacemaker actually win the benson and hedges or whatever it was called then - started to run in his own right after that - that win probably still not his most famous race (and yep I did bet him - not when he won)
Report maysoon3 July 5, 2025 9:03 AM BST
had a look - the horse that won the benson and hedges was running in his own right and if he was making the pace for cacoethes that was only part of his job / useful coincidence

Slip Anchor, Lanfranco (cash Asmussen).
Report ponchoslament July 5, 2025 10:38 AM BST
Didn’t hern run two pacemakers, two h/cappers
Went off flat out?? Maybe that was another king George ?
Report stewarts rise July 5, 2025 10:45 AM BST
Poncho, that was for Bustino against Grundy, Kinlet was one of them.
Report ponchoslament July 5, 2025 10:52 AM BST
Stu, I don’t go back thst far, Grundy bustino,
Vaguely remember hern running two pacemakers
Who went clear, petoski KG, didn’t oh so sharp run
In thst ?
Report stewarts rise July 5, 2025 10:53 AM BST
Think Highest was the other pacemaker for Bustino.
Petoski race had August,Infantryman and Plastic Paddy, the latter being a waste of entry fee.
Report stewarts rise July 5, 2025 10:55 AM BST
Yes and Rainbow Quest ran 2nd I think.
Report ponchoslament July 5, 2025 10:57 AM BST
Ok Stu I’ll take your word for that, memory going, of all the unexpected
Things to happen to a man, old age is by far the cruelest

1985 result...weighed in...

Report ponchoslament July 5, 2025 11:02 AM BST
Maybe there’s still hope for me yet, Bolden and vouchsafe
Lead for Petoski, but In the following yesrs KG ?
Report top2rated July 5, 2025 11:07 AM BST
Yes, there's still hope, poncho... Grin

Report stewarts rise July 5, 2025 11:10 AM BST
Kinlet and Highest ran so fast in 75 that the winning time for the race won by Grundy lasted for 35 years. The effort put in by both the winner and Bustino was too much for them and Bustino never ran again and Grundy only once where his winning form was comprehensibly turned over by Dahlia and Star Appeal. He never ran again after that.

Eddie - I think the horse bought to be Slip Anchor's pacemaker was Robert Armstrong's Rakaposhi King,
though I'm not sure the plan ever materialised.
Report Smoky Hill July 5, 2025 2:21 PM BST
Teenoso didn't have his own pacemaker, nor did he need one.
Report Eddie Batt July 5, 2025 2:58 PM BST
Herbie -good shout with Rakaposhi King.I think you could be right about the plan not materialising -IIRC they paid 36000guineas for him and he ended up winning a Group race.
Report Herbie-53 July 5, 2025 3:31 PM BST
Eddie - I can't remember how much he cost but he was seemingly an exposed handicapper if memory serves
and Henry managed to squeeze a few more pounds out of him as he became a regular pattern/G3 performer.
Report maysoon3 July 5, 2025 3:56 PM BST
yep a few mistakes by me - it was the 1986 king George I meant - bolden vouchsafe and dihistan going flying off in front

Good shout with rakposhi king - turned out just to run in his own rights if I remember correctly

Teenoso - I thought mill plantation sometimes ran as a pacemaker for him - maybe I’m thinking of another horse of that owner
Report maysoon3 July 5, 2025 3:58 PM BST
Fairly sure rakaposhi king beat bakharrof in a group 2/3 - not that bakharrof was a world beater but I remember being surprised and I think rakaposhi king was favourite which also surprised me
Report Herbie-53 July 5, 2025 4:40 PM BST
I think Bakharoff was officially champion 2yo and Winter fav for The Derby!
Report maysoon3 July 5, 2025 6:29 PM BST
Yep bakharrof a good horse - was placed in the French and Irish Derby’s did win as a 3yo (from memory) but probably didn’t turn out to be as good as first thought - I was still surprised rakaposhi king beat him
