Great trainer of the likes of Night Nurse ,Sea Pigeon, rip.
Report jimnast June 9, 2025 12:50 PM BST
Sad news part of those great days when the north of England completely dominated national hunt racing I doubt anyone who enjoys racing and was around in those days would not have sea pigeon in the top five favourites
Report jimnast June 9, 2025 12:51 PM BST
Yes it must of George
Report howard June 9, 2025 12:53 PM BST
It was Peter no.1 and the rest way behind in the north ( jumps ) for quite a few years. RIP
Report howard June 9, 2025 12:58 PM BST
Top 1 for me. ( Sea Pigeon ) Been nothing really close since. Champion hurdles Ebor under 10st and the rest.
Report jimnast June 9, 2025 1:25 PM BST
If you could get hold of any film howard from his ebor win you would get plenty for it.
Report sageform June 9, 2025 1:57 PM BST
Night Nurse was a special horse. He was not a top class flat horse like Sea Pigeon but he was a great hurdler winning the CH twice with Sea Pigeon behind him on one occasion.

We all know death comes to us all but every so often one has special meaning and hits you right in the teeth.
What he and his horses gave to my enjoyment of my youth.
R.I.P. and thanks for the memories.

Plenty more beside the obvious one's,Jobroke landed a massive gamble in the County Hurdle,Alverton won an Arkle along with Clayside and Ryeman, just seemed to churn out big winners all the time in those days,Within the Law,Father Delaney etc etc.

Honcho- Totally agree.Us auld yins were so lucky to have been around to witness those great times. Sometimes I feel sorry for the youth of today. Similar to when The Queen died can't be replaced.Sad

Did his own Little Owl not beat Night Nurse to a Champion Hurdle/Gold Cup double then go on never win another race.

As has been mentioned, the north of England jumping scene was unbelievably strong in the 70's to mid 80's. You had some cracking Wetherby cards. One of the tributes today refers to the Wetherby meeting in October 1980 which was when MH Easterby had five winners on a six race card. This was the Wednesday meeting. I was there that day. The race that he missed out ( not sure he had a runner) was the opening novice hurdle won by Jimmy Fitzgerald's Wyn Bank, ridden by Jonjo who also rode five winners - the one missing being Wink The Cop ridden by Tim Easterby. On the Saturday Jonjo broke his leg at Bangor putting an early end to any chance of retaining his champion jockeys title.
