To be fair, it's pretty difficult to keep track of every runner in a big field over a short distance, where the race is taking place a long way from the commentary booth.

Love him or hate him he has been a massive part of most racing fans lives, especially the "more experienced" types
 I personally wish him all the very best...I know he is supposedly not retiring per say but it's a good time to hang the mic up. Feet up time and it's well deserved Thommo....Be lucky |

Thing with Tommo is he represents a great tradition in the history of racing.
A polite way to describe such an individual is as a self-promotion artist. I am thinking Prince Monolulu. The bloke out of Jeeves and Wooster selling tips. Soapy Sam I think his name was. Off the top of my head Tommo highlights include.. The hunt for Shergar. His tipping line. Charging Talksport for a 5 minute slot on the Alan Brazil Breakfast show. (Not sure how much, have heard anywhere from £50 to 500). Asking various female punters if they were an 'Exotic Dancer' when Jonjo O'Neil's chaser was regularly runner up to Kauto Star. That interview with Ruby Walsh after Denman won the Gold Cup. The 'cringe' advert for the Crown Hotel picked up by Greg James on Radio 1. Tommo has seen off cancer and also sired a Scotland international Rugby player. Quite a life. Fair play to him. |

He has lived a life alright. I doubt id be the same if I was free lance like he has been for of his career and has needed to keep many fingers in many pies, but you cannot A) His clear love for a pound note...B) His love for the sport...C)His drive to earn and provide for his family...D) His need to be liked and respected.
He has harmed nobody (barring the odd mistake) in his attempt to achieve the above. Question is, are we all really any different? McCririck was similar in the same age, Chapman could be described as similar today and I still like him to a point. Wouldn't life be bloody boring without characters like these. |

THE JURY in the Top Cees libel case was warned yesterday to "treat with caution" the evidence submitted by Derek Thompson, the Channel 4 Racing presenter, when they retired to consider their verdict.
Mr Justice Morland was summing up the evidence on day 18 of the libel action brought against The Sporting Life newspaper by Jack and Lynda Ramsden and the champion Flat jockey, Kieren Fallon. The plaintiffs are suing over an article headed "Contempt For The Punter", published the day after Top Cees runaway win in the Chester Cup in May 1995. It alleged that they had been "cheating" when Top Cees failed to win the Swaffham Handicap at Newmarket three weeks earlier. Justice Morland said that the defence "strongly relied" on the evidence of Thompson, who testified that Fallon had told him that he had deliberately stopped Top Cees, the favourite for the Swaffham. "You should treat this evidence with caution," he told the jury. "Only after careful consideration must you act on it, when you are satisfied of its truth and accuracy and that it amounts to a confession." |

The past is not relevant. In my view he is below par for a caller, and has been for some time. He must be well aware of that himself. It's fingers down the blackboard stuff, and I usually mute the box when he is the caller at a meeting. Today I left it on as so many meetings on rtv. On a personal level (a wealth management perspective), some people spend all their time accumulating wealth, and never properly allow themselves to utilise it. Wasting a valuable, rare, summer Sunday grafting, travelling, for a crappy jumps card, is it really worth it. James Shack on yt is really good on this stuff, fwiw.

Yep, to stay relevant (in his own mind). But he wouldn't do it for free either. It's quite a common affliction, for some personalities, they never have enough. They obviously do in reality, but cannot come to terms with it.

It was mentioned to me many years ago the old line of "as I look over the Newmarket gallops" line was a porky. I don't doubt for a second he has made many.
