the only angle I can ever find is three year  old runners or lightly raced 4 year olds.  These races were 4+   Suppose with hindsight first winner fitted.

Laying in them big fields at York is just as dangerous (perhaps more) than betting in them. Just not worth it. Too risky, unless you have fastest pictures in the Universe like Rico.

Most meetings at York littered with big field handicaps and Ed and Co will tell us this us what punters want. Add in the insufferable Mulrennan waffling endlessly about anything Yorkshire and it's generally a nightmare to watch.

Ronnie

You mention "having a glass of Chablis" many many times, is it meant to impress all the beer-swilling forumites?

I went to this meeting in the late 80's, enjoying all the corporate hospitality available. I have never had the urge to go back even though I live in the north west, rarely betting there as well.

I hope today brings a change of fortune for you.

its what the bookies want.

only got to look at how good friday has been cleverly wangled into the biggest punters graveyard of the year.

lets have racing on good friday.

ooh, good idea.  lets make every fooking race an impossible all-weather handicap with a 13/2 favourite and an 18/1 winner.

its exactly what the public want.

well as were told 24/7 all the shrewdies have left the game, been restricted.cant get on, bookies checks etc, etc, I,d imagine a Maj of what's left when either having theirdaily flutter, day at races do want these big field handicaps to throw a few darts at rather than small field condition, graded, group  races, the group sprinting division is a glorified your turn today handicap anyway, which leaves you 2nd guessing today wanted from multiple AOB entry races, NEVO only bets/tips in these big field hadicaps

So many of the comments about profit and loss (usually loss) seem to assume that punters are a homogeneous group who all bet in the same way. If that was the case then markets would reflect that with very short priced favourites for example or every O'Brien or Mullins favourite at 1/5. In reality we only have to look at the tipping competitions on this Forum to see the range of choices made by a small sample of punters. Some like me tend to follow stables, others follow jockeys, others try to read the market trends etc. A few even claim to follow form lines! Of course bookmakers want races with as many potential winners as possible but if nobody bet on 16 runner handicaps, they would soon by lobbying for more 6 runner conditions races. As it happens I did well on Good Friday thanks to Andrew Balding winning 2 at Newcastle and both were well backed. York yesterday has been poor as Andrew has had 2 seconds and a third while Gallant got a terrible run and is still very well handicapped for another day. Nobody has to bet on any race. If you dislike AW handicaps on Good Friday, read a book or watch Coronation Street.

you can bet in these type of events but you have to give yourself a chance imo, back 3 or 4 at biggish  prices, by biggish i mean 16s minimum ,keep to smallish steaks and have a bit on at bfsp .

I attended yesterday £40 in county stands a bit better than the £75 in august meetings , it was very quiet but I think the first day is, weather was great, I did play blind the draws and got 2 up and nearly a 20/1 2nd which would have been a bonus to win, they have overwatered as the draws were different yesterday but overwatering at York is what’s always happened on purpose or not no idea, and no world pool to boost the winnings, price of a pint was £7-10 Amstel , 7-50 others generally, the clique champagne had gone up to £85 was £78 last year and £70 year before, not many having it, house champagne was £46 and she said was good, she must have liked it she had 2 fk bottles, best pint was the theakstons they have a few bars and the £6-40 ipa hazy beer was fantastic, in tatts behind the big stand fish and peas £11.25 don’t do chips, and a great rock band on between races and a hour after on every day, that was good

I noticed the small crowds on the tv.

Haydock was rammed on Saturday, £7 a pint, jazz band & plenty of totty. I managed a couple of winners which paid for the day. Best thing is it's only 10 mins from home.

TMM - I have to disagree mate - in those huge fields there's often 6 places available and rags regularly
surprise...especially in the h'cap sprints.

While the real problem gamblers are those backing win only favourites in those races, my 'system' is to
pick 4 rags E/W around 25/1 with the primary objective getting one in the first 6...as that recoups most
of the outlay.

Small backers like me can have a bit of enjoyment on a wide-open TV race, staking a score in total with
4 x £2.50 E/Ways on 25/1 pokes - just one of them in the first 6 returns £15 for your £20 - losses like
that are bearable though the occasional wipeout has to be catered for - that said...now & again (like
yesterday) a Rousing Encore goes inHappy

PS - just got a couple of smashing runs from Mon Na Slieve 33/1 & Toca Madera 25/1.

It's hardly a system as there's minimal skill involved and I'm as good as playing bingo...but it gives
you an interest for a modest amount...and skinners can help you outHappy
