When the guy who is widely hailed as a genius has the favourite for both 2,000 Guineas and the Derby basically states on the eve of the season he couldn't get it fit enough for the former then you may as well rip up the ante-post book. He has mopped up the trials at Chester, and probably will do a similar job at Lingfield, but the Dante will provide the real test.

Give me a low grade h/cap at somewhere like Market Rasen any day of the week , lack of handbrake usage makes the race harder not easier for our ultimate aim of making money.

95% of punters couldn't tell you either Ace without googling , it's a sport primarily concerning gambling memories rather than any following of the sport but bet you most of those 95% could tell you the last winner they backed or the last good win they had.

its not a sad state, it has always been the case, albeit more so today, as less folk are interested in racing..I blame the advent of the internet for most things these days....i could reel of classic winners from the 80s and 90s,(even without gambling memories) but couldn't tell you the winners of the top of my head from last year and the year before.
it is an age thing too....i could tell your every world cup winner and the the host country from 1930 onwards when i was younger , again of the top of my head...no chance i could remember where the world cup was held going back 20 years, never mind the winner.

Will say, there was a huge buzz in the 80s, early 90s, for every classic trial...As was said, coolmore and godolphin have changed everything, good horses in different stables just made everything better, you didnt know who had the best horses.....tbf Coolmore sometimes dont either, even with everything in house.
it isnt the same, not the same interest im afraid, even without coolmore and godolphin, times have changed, interest wise.

The Derby diminished massively for me when moving from Wednesday to Saturday. It stood alone and the centre of attention midweek whereas now it’s lost amongst the maelstrom of Saturday sport.

Similar to the bookies, used to go down midweek in the afternoon, the place would be packed with punters listening to the blower and 99% smokers. Nowadays you’ll have a couple of people watching half heartedly.
