A foreign care worker (not even a nurse or medic) can accompany their partner (allow to work) into the UK for a fee. Their children can come too and access schools and the NHS. These are additional costs to the UK taxpayers. After a few years they can apply for "leave to remain" status in the UK. Also, some unscrupulous care home owners are manipulating these work permits or holding the care worker to ransom for their own benefit. 

To emigrate and live in the UK legally a foreigner will need a financial pot of many £100k. A care worker does not.

As there are 131,000 vacant posts at the moment, you should be down on your knees thanking them.

There never used to be a shortage of nurses. It was a noble vocation for many women as they were helping their own, their tribe so to speak.. That has changed, and therefore we have a shortage of white nurses and need to import imo.

We have a shortage because we didn't train enough, same with doctors.
The number of training places for doctors were actually reduced twice in the noughties.

The establishments that trained them weren't reduced (doctors and nurses), it was the number of applicants that reduced. If I am wrong, then name the ones that closed please.

That's why the Asians are petrified on the Poles. The Poles speak English others can understand unlike the Asian lady I spoke to at Asda Customer Service by fone. I'd barely understand her.

Layemall, they took the nurses bursary away, I think they have resumed giving one again.
A lot of immigrants in healthcare are not nurses or doctors, but relatively low paid care workers.
If they turn up with a family to house it adds to the population and the cost dilutes gdp,
far better to train our own, here.

Why not Tibet, The Philippines, Australia, etc. I can confidently infer care workers from S Asia are usually lowly educated, no qualification and vastly available; life in S Asia is much tougher than being a care worker in the UK. And, despite the (relatively high) entrance fee a work visa is easily obtainable esp with unscrupulous care home owners and agents.

Also, once into the UK their children can access schools and the NHS; their partner can work for pay too.

This is a short term gain, but a long term pain for the UK and her citizens. For instance, the costs to our welfare and benefit system and services are many multiples of the fees the country charged/received from the care workers. These care workers are very unlikely to be future medics, lawyers, teachers, etc.

If GDP per capita was the only figure politicians were allowed to use, I think we'd all see the benefits of mass immigration.

How many pay taxes? How many minicab drivers, employees of independently/family-run retailers or those in catering establishment pay taxes to HMRC?

Social decline and deprivation and every citizen relatively poorer than 18 years ago, let more in, that should solve it.

impossible123, you highlight the only benefit I have noticed, it's easier to get a cab(Uber) than it was 20 years ago.

Of course there are so many of them now. No doubt quite a few are uninsured, possibly using a family/colleague's Uber licence and possibly without a driving licence too. And, how many can drive (safely) or get there without the assistance of a satnav? Most speak English that is difficult to understand.

I was in Sainsbury earlier today. I asked a shop assistant (foreign and sounded educated) where I'd find a jar of mussels. He said "I don't know. I'm only working in the bakery section". Charming!

Migration of care workers fell from 129,000 to 26,000 after restrictions to family members. And you can't 'confidently infer' anything, either.

From a stratospheric figure to a much lower one does not necessarily mean the new figure is satisfactory or reliable. This immigration backdoor policy may have been tightened. It should have been shut tight years ago.

I know of many (nurses) whose entries into the UK have been facilitated in this manner. And, their spouses could barely speak English (no minimum English proficiency test necessary) the public could understand. These non-English speaking spouses worked either in care homes as care workers or kitchen staff;the supervision is 7/8 to 1 English speaking nurse.

I'm not against this manner of entry at all. It's the persistent abuses and generosity of the UK welfare state, NHS and schools I'm concerned about. All these extra costs incurred immediately and long term could be better spent in paying a higher wage to locals doing the same job.
