due.     Mr Carruthers said his partner had been practically "cut in half" 11 days previously when their daughter was born by a Caesarean section so, sick of them being all stuck inside, wanted to treat her and their child to dinner at the Metrocentre in Gateshead, some 70 miles (113km) from their Wigton home.

But they had given up on their outing at a spot that just happened to be near the tree because their child would not settle in the car, and they went home for a takeaway, he said.

When asked why he wanted to go on a three-hour round trip with his partner and new-born child on a day when storms were forecast rather than just go for something to eat in Carlisle, near where they lived, Mr Carruthers said restaurants in the Cumbria city were "not the best" and the Metrocentre was better.

As far as I am concerned it is an absolute farce now much media time has been wasted on this incident. The BBC trolls reported that it was known (the tree) throughout the world.  How had I never heard of it before then?
It's only a tree ffs. Yes it is regrettable that it was destroyed by a pair of witless vandals and it is sad that no-one will ever savings able to propose under it.
So what?
The Southport savage poured boiling hot water over a prison warder the other day, probably with lasting damage, both physical and mental, to the victim.
Which crime is more heinous? No brainer for me.
It is regrettable the tree was chopped down but no more than that.  Surely?!
Report howard May 10, 2025 10:08 AM BST
The prison system "asks for it "   This is the second such incident in a few weeks.  These guys shouldn't be anywhere near kitchens or boiling water/oil .  Lets have criminal damage value 500k+ carried out all over the place ?   Lets' have tv masts chopped down and no tv for regions?  Oh it's alright because you don't live in the area and have never heard of it. The sentence handed to these cretins will tell you how serious it was. An example needs to made of them.

The woke blob have taken over, hold all the power and face none of the potential consequences. Hence corrupt legal decisions, mandate to go easy on 'minorities', treat prison inmates like guests of a hotel, allow schiztos and fanatics to live in the 'community' avoiding their drugs if they don't fancy taking them, allowing evil dangerous killers out on parole after completing a fraction of the sentence.

An MP wants a decision to move a prisoner, convicted of gouging his ex-partner's eyes out, to an open prison to be reviewed.

Andrew George, Liberal Democrat MP for St Ives, said a decision to move Shane Jenkin out of a closed prison was "totally unacceptable" and he would be writing to Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood.

Jenkin, 45, of Sea Lane, Hayle, in Cornwall was jailed for life with a minimum term of six years in 2012 after he blinded Tina Nash while holding her hostage for 12 hours in April 2011.

A Ministry of Justice (MoJ) spokesperson said "robust risk assessments" would have been carried out before moving Jenkin to an open prison.

Jenkin, who admitted grievous bodily harm, also strangled Ms Nash and broke her nose and jaw, and gouged her eyes out while holding her hostage.

It is a tree.  A tree.  One tree.  A tree which means absolutely nothing to the ordinary citizens of this country who struggle to make ends meet, feed and clothe their kids, keep sheriff officers from their doors even though they have jobs.
It is a tree and, presumably you are a tree hugger of monstrous sanctimony and little common sense.
I repeat it is very regrettable it has been vandalised - whether I live nearby to it or not.
Lol.
Report Cider May 11, 2025 6:34 AM BST
I'm as anti 'woke' as anyone, but in my opinion you're seeing it from the wrong angle. If someone sets out to wilfully destroy something that is so important to multiple people, that cannot be replaced, the deterrent to others considering something similar must be very high. Cultural vandalism, and God knows there's been far too much of that from elected politicians already. Yes you might not care about this tree, but it could be something you do care deeply about on the next occasion.

Anyhow, it would be most prudent to await the actual sanction, before passing judgement on it. I absolutely do not trust the judiciary in its current state. They could give a lengthy custodial and suspend it Plain

Report LoyalHoncho May 11, 2025 1:58 PM BST
Well said FOYLES - my view too.  And on the point of sentencing don't give them porridgetime or a fine but give them a horrendous amount of community service, like a 1,000 hours, to be rigidly applied by our social work department with no relaxation of the terms until completed.  In the environment.  Maybe clearing rivers and canals of litter, junk etc; or cleaning up polluted areas and picking up litter anywhere.  Consistently monitored and applied.  Make their retribution of chronic proportions so they, and others get the message.
And for us,     ask ourselves a question.  Why do we go full time overboard about one tree when don't give one blog about the Amazon rainforest being systematically, and irreversibly denuded to nothingness?  Or, if we must be closer to home, why have jobs of the singers herein not raised concerns about the destruction of British countryside, including the loss of thousands upon thousands of trees, by the now cancelled HR2 fiasco.
Well?

However the fact remains that they have vandalised a tree.  They haven't committed treason, or committed serial murders or glued themselves to the M25 and seriously disrupted the life of a nation.  They have stupidly cut down a tree, and even more stupidly, proved themselves to be absolute Grecians dduring their tribal

The two men convicted of chopping down the Sycamore Gap tree were suspects in an investigation into alleged homophobic assaults that took place around the same time they committed their infamous crime.

Daniel Graham, 39, from Carlisle, and Adam Carruthers, 32, from Wigton, were found guilty last week of cutting down the iconic tree at Hadrian's Wall on 27 September 2023.

Nine days earlier, a man reported being doused in icing sugar and subjected to verbal abuse by two people at a layby in Cumbria often frequented by men seeking sexual encounters.

The CPS dropped the case more than a year later, but emails confirm police prepared a file on Graham and Carruthers for prosecutors.
