Who will ride the horse ?

Morons on here ...kenbo & co all proved to be clowns by John Gosden himself jocking off and binning Skidmark lol... mugs

Losing a Guineas through incompetent face reading and riding isn't a "minor" mistake for me.
|
|
By:
Whether it was a class 6 handicap or a group one classic wasn't the point being made. It was an assessment on the ride.
|
|
By:
Which I stand on. it's a fair assessment.
Other mitigating factors such as the high profile owner, trainer never having won a guineas, horse was fav, had won the best trial and won it well, have no doubt contributed to subsequent actions and headlines. |

It's only a game........to most. Nobody has died. If India and its neighbour Pakistan could go to war this riding "mistake" pales into insignificance.

There are at least 20 rides per week (maybe double that) which matched the one which Shoemark gave. Just watch some racing. Every horse that finishes well but fails to win falls into this category. The fact it was a classic race is totally irrelevant. As Pomp points out, pocket talkers in abundance. I disagree slightly that he didn't get after him sooner. It would help to watch the race. About 2f out Shoemark rode him vigorously and the horse did not quicken for 50 yards or so. If the horse had quickened immediately he MIGHT have won. Nobody seems to question how much the winner had in reserve. The fact that he did not quicken immediately suggests the horse is not as good as many believe because really great horses quicken immediately off any pace. If the horse is as good as Gosden thinks, why did he not quicken immediately? Fortunately for those who agree with this assessment the colt will probably be over-rated. Timeform? Look at your own race replays and see what happened.

It was an assessment on a ride, in a big, big race. Which is very much the point. Imho.

You can make mistakes in the little races, and nothing much will be said. after all you are "educating" the horse...to have poor after poor rides in Group 1s/classics are monetary mistakes of huge magnitude, and im not talking about the prize money.
tbh, im surprised Godsen stood by him for so long, he had many warnings along the way, to improve, Rab on some of the better one's instead of him, making it obvious some of Godsens owners were not convinced. We all know Buick would have won last week on the horse that Shoemark was "over confident" on. |

..."educating the horse...to have poor after poor rides in Group 1s/Classics....."
I think this is a very unfair statement. As I've already said the juvenile inmates of Gosden last season wer much of a muchness; the older Group horse developed a quirkiness, regressing or disinterested in racing eg Inspiral, Emily Upjohn; Dettori and other jocks did not fare any better either. Moore made many riding/strategy mistakes at Ascot eg riding/waiting for a gap; Dettori on Stradivarius where he was vocally criticised by Gosden and jocked-off by the horse's owner, and of course Starkey at Epsom. However, Guy Harwood stood by him. That was loyalty and friendship between the two individuals who were not just professionally involved but on a human level. Mr Gosden talks a good talk; eloquent and succinct, post race, not before though. I was around when Sir Cecil, Sir Stoute, Mr Hr Harwood and Mr Cumani were around. And, none were vocal esp publicly, but loyal. There's life after horseracing! |

In my experience trainer loyalty to incompetent jockeys can be very damaging to a stable and is a big mistake. Peter Walwyn defending Pat Eddery to Daniel Wildenstein is a famous case in point which was him losing many very good horses and his stable slipped thereafter. If my memory is accurate he suffered another kick in the teeth when, very soon after, Eddery dumped him and moved on.

Some statistics show that Shoemark has a good overall record but any competent jockey riding for one of the top yards is going to win on their best 3yo maidens and well handicapped late developers. The acid test for the really top jobs is your record in Group 1 races.

By:
I hope he beats the representative of Gosden. This will send a statement to the self-interest stable with limited firepower. He deserves it, if so. Good luck Shoemark!

Juddmonte rules the roost, nothing to do with Gosden tbh…

I understand that nevertheless, there was no need to put the boot in in public. Harwood and Sir Cecil did not when the going got tough.

Not many a better jockey when Buick gets into that driving finish at Newmarket.

Fully agree sageform. Some jockeys are not quite up to it.

You can count on one hand how many genuine chances Probert has had in G1's and even those were just half chances with nothing going off at under 10/1. So the point you're making is a rather pointless one, Wonder.
It appears that Watson is 2nd jockey at Balding's now so that door has been closed. But the partnership with Clive Cox is looking promising and maybe he'll provide Dave with a G1 horse someday? |

its not my point wp
its sageform's point and I agree its (being kind here) pointless |
