Doesn't get the credit it deserves. Change the owner and trainer and you'd get it talked about differently. Quicker guineas than Frankel . Group one over 8,10,12.

Agreed
Report comingupthehill April 23, 2025 10:03 PM BST
Totally agree, won all the great races and with a finishing burst, best of the best.

The greatest racing achievement that I’ve seen,is someone who joined betfair on April the 1st ,then not only discovered that there was a forum, then managed to find it,and navigate posting it.

Well done.

Pure class, don't think they ever really got to the bottom of him either.
Report clouded leopard April 23, 2025 11:36 PM BST
Had a perfectly captured oil of his intelligent looking head which I bought at Newmarket way back then which I quite unbelievably sold a few years ago. Still rue that decision.

One of my favourites
Report Theoneandonly April 24, 2025 8:49 AM BST
Yeah for me Frankel and Sea the Stars are the best I've seen by quite a bit. As CL says one of those horses that just seemed to win by a little bit and never got to the bottom of him.

AO'B tried so hard to beat him and threw everything he could at him that season, yet STS class just kept on shining through.
Report DrGordons April 24, 2025 9:40 AM BST
Not only one of the greatest racehorses of all time but a brilliant sire - Harzand, Tagrooda,
Baaeed, Stradivarius  Emily Upjohn, Cloth of Stars,Sea of Class and many more. Incredible that the dam Urban Sea bore two icons of modern times in Sea the Stars and Galileo.
Report pandora1963 April 24, 2025 10:36 AM BST
Not in same class as Frankel.Get real. Run it against Frankel over a mile and Mike quarter it gets thrashed.
Report pandora1963 April 24, 2025 10:38 AM BST
Frankel would be 1/3 against sea the stars over a mile or mile quarter. Minimum
.
Report DrGordons April 24, 2025 11:22 AM BST
Did you read The Pomps opening remark - Frankel's guineas slower. He just beat a moderate crop notably Excelebration, albeit in eye catching style. Sea the Stars would have beaten him over any distance, doing just enough.

if he was Sea The Stars would garner more respect

Durability, Versatility

An amazing nag.

I assume this is mainly in comparison with Frankel? Frankel was a top 2yo, Sea The Stars wasn't. Sea The Stars only had two seasons and never won by very far, making it guesswork as to how much extra, if anything, he had left. All considerations to rein in going overboard.
Report ThePomp April 24, 2025 12:29 PM BST
Pandora, very churlish. "Not in the same class"... LOL where to start. To do what he did over the varied distances in and in the amount of time. Might be showing my age here, 35, but his 3 year old season has to go down as the best ever? Kinane and ox have both said to the effect he only ever done enough to win. I'm sure I've seen an interview with oxx that says kinane reckons he only ever gave 80% of what he had.
Report monarch April 24, 2025 12:48 PM BST
Maximum credit must go to Mick Kinane as well. The best jockey I have seen in my 30 years watching racing.
Report DrGordons April 24, 2025 12:50 PM BST
Cardinal - the sire Cape Cross was named after the four stars in the southern cross. The dam was Urban Sea. So they took the Sea part, tacked on the Stars and came up with a regular saying.
Bit clumsy but you don't see the words when the commentator's calling em home!

Original post was not supposed to be a direct comparison. Just an observation that STS does indeed not get the plaudits he deserves compared to All others before and after him.

Report howard April 24, 2025 1:20 PM BST
It's all guesswork this game. That's why if they had taken each other on over 12f the betting would have been close.   My bit of guesswork is STS is the best 12f turf horse I have seen. Peter O'Sullivan thought the same as do many top judges. He gets the credit. You are reading the "wrong " places.
Report ThePomp April 24, 2025 1:43 PM BST
I disagree. Not saying he doesn't get the credit but i do think its disproportionate to what others get. Frankel, dancing brave (another favourite of mine), Tudor minstrel, even Dubai millennium seem to get more when the so called pundits talk about the big races at the big meets of the year.
Report howard April 24, 2025 2:26 PM BST
the people on tv are in the main clueless  that's why they are on tv
Report Pilsudski April 24, 2025 4:22 PM BST
Sea OF Stars would have been better.
Report differentdrum April 24, 2025 5:33 PM BST
I would say there's a recency bias to almost all comparisons, not just racing. So I think they may well get more credit than they deserve. When Racing TV shows the great races how often do they go back even to the 70's? Hardly ever, you actually have to look on YouTube if you are interested enough.

I can't remember the last time someone mentioned Tudor Minstrel.
Report ThePomp April 24, 2025 6:01 PM BST
Usually brough Scott. Although he's 82. Guess that can be forgiven.
Report geoff m April 24, 2025 6:37 PM BST
Many horses ran quicker Guineas than Frankel. Doesnt make them a better horse. Galileo Gold on supposed gd to soft ran @ least a second quicker than Frankel (on gd to firm)
Report ThePomp April 24, 2025 6:45 PM BST
I agree. I brought it up because many have said that that particular performance was "breathtaking" etc etc. the visuals looked great but don't wax lyrical and fall over yourselves gushing about how it's one of the performances of all time when STS and kameko off top of my head as well as GG ran the same CD quicker.
Report DrGordons April 24, 2025 6:46 PM BST
This is the Knockroe enigma. A handicapper carrying 10 stone breaks the Epsom track record - so is he a world beater ? No. On the other point, it's funny but you do get great horses in almost consecutive seasons. Frankel and Sea the Stars recently going back to Sir ivor and Nijinsky
One year in between there.
Report geoff m April 24, 2025 6:55 PM BST
There was a very strong headwind for Frankels Guineas.
Report comingupthehill April 24, 2025 6:57 PM BST
Good shout Geoff,it looked fast and impressive.
Report iswearitsoath April 24, 2025 7:23 PM BST
His Arc win was very pleasing. It felt the absolutely perfect end to a stellar campaign. The fact the he progressed steadily up the distances also gave it a nice symmetry.

Perhaps Frankel coming so soon after him is why he doesn't get enough credit? If he'd been the only middle-distance superstar for 5-10 years then he might endure more in people's consciousness?

Great horse, though I couldn't put him above Frankel. He's close but not that close.
Report brandyontherocks April 24, 2025 8:51 PM BST
Anyone who watches racing would give Sea The Stars plenty of credit.
He was a fantastic horse.
But don't make yourself look silly by comparing his time in the Guineas to Frankels and come to the assumption he is obviously better.

I haven't. Read above comments.

Every race on Guineas day in 2009 were far quicker than Frankels year.
Every race.
What Frankel did that day will never be repeated.
Report ThePomp April 24, 2025 9:11 PM BST
I think he was a lot better for full disclosure. his race wins coupled with the short amount of time he was able to achieve said wins. Won the best of the best races that England, Ireland and France have to offer over varying championship distances. He was the complete thoroughbred racehorse. A bloodstock and breeders dream. The complete machine. Sea the stars done IT.  Frankel missed out on The Derby at 3 and never went for the arc. not his fault obviously but aren't they the two most prestigious races the flat has to offer historically? I suppose it's subjective as to what standards and variables one measures a racehorse.
