I am going to Dublin for a few days in June, I will pop in and and have a look at the Temple bar without buying a drink.

And tonight, and tomorrow night, every night, it's full of tourists, sold on this idea that it's the happening place to be. Tourists are easy prey wherever they go and businesses know they are dealing with the one off tourist, who most likely isn't returning.

More savvy travellers to Dublin check out in advance where the locals drink, and it isn't there.

Alcohol and gambling do not mix. I'm surprised a ban or at least alcohol is banned on the track and the stands.

Never had a beer at a track in my life….bad enough sober tbh…coffee addict…

formofthe peace - my staple for the last 10 years , Truong Lam coffee from Dragon coffee . Cardiff , Vietnamese cafe coffee , strong , sweet and an acquired addictive taste , use Kalitta wave dripper . Alcohol still , but only to a modicum compared to the past .

Temple Bar is a tourist trap - that being said, it's worth experiencing once and they often have good live music on.

That's part of the problem. Too many people come to Dublin and for some reason feel they have to visit Temple Bar to tell everyone they were there. It's just pubs full of other tourists. Still the pint price shows it is clearly a joke - over 11 for a pint of that - could buy about 12 cans for same price.

Ryan's Beggars Bush is my usual haunt when visiting Dublin.

@stu - "Baby Guinness" is Tia Maria and Bailey's.  It's pretty horrible unless you have a very sweet tooth.

Blimey I suppose one would get similarly ripped off if buying a beer near St Pauls in London or Notre Dame in Paris. About 25 years on a stag do in Dublin we ended up in a bar in Temple Bar called The Left Bank if memory serves me right and don't remember it being particularly overpriced. I do remember who well organised it was despite being very busy; a slight wave of the hand to a member of staff using BT headsets and another round arrived very quickly.

Depends what you mean by ripped-off.  Standard Central London / City prices - £6.50 or £7 a pint. (I still have friends from my days in the finance industry who work locally, so it's one of the areas I have a pint or two in fairly frequently).

baby guinness is orrible. whoever came up with that revolting rip-off deserves a medal. and why does guinness allow them to call it that?

you expect to pay a premium in well-known popular places but temple bar aint that clever and cant justify that- the gp on these things is enormous already. i dont think most people relaise how big

italy is fabulously expensive for sherbet. sitting next to the leaning tower was so much we laughed and gave them a shock by having a boatload at sky-high prices and then spoofed for the bill. italians will get one beer and 4 straws so they can share it. not joking

almost all pubs in central london are rubbish and a disappointment to touurists

i dont go any more but used to love diving into a subterranean wine bar. few tourist did and they are fab. cool, quiet and not a get-up. and proper sherbet

going to DUBLIN and not going to TEMPLE BAR ,is like going to to silverstone and not ngoingt to the grand prix, WHAT ELSE DO PEOPLE GO TO DUBLIN FOR ?

Absolutely right about the music in temple bar remember the first time I went you I said to the other half one nay at these prices ended up all afternoon in there it as well worth the visit.

its basically the guiness village at chelt,with tiddly fiddly bands in every pub playing Irish Rover,fields of athen eye,dirty auld town on a loop repeat,they,ll count the music as part of the Dublin experience

evening ronnie ... you are jogging my memory from my early betting days . i recall gus carter numbered tickets . i also remember the walmesley bros ( betwith twins ? ) and gillibrand " who knows it ? " ....i also remember in 1979 being charged the equivalent sum of £7 in paris arc weekend for 2 tiny, tiny  bottles of kronenbourg in a bar staffed with rather nice looking ladies !...the fact i can still remember all this i take as a bonus . finally , debbie shirt tells me the york badges are being despatched any day . hurrah .

No self respecting Irish person will drink in Temple Bar. It's a complete tourist trap. Has been some fine recommendations from other posters for proper pubs in Dublin - would 100% back up the nods to Kehoes and The Palace. Cracking spots. Slightly more off the beaten track is The Auld Triangle. Superb pints at 'old' prices. But can occasionally be a bit like the pub from Trainspotting, but pay your money and take your chance.

dirty auld town made famous in recent time by THE POGUES more so since shanesd death and a regular on the DIDDLY FIDDLY groups play sets

I remember about 20 yrs ago about to buy a beer in Paris at a hotel bar and BIG MAC stopped me saying it was 11 quid a glass about 2/3rds of a pint, and directed me to a bar about 200 yds down the rd,  the yr Fallon won and got done for cocaine taking

I’ve never had an alcoholic drink in four decades going racing saddo,mostly because i go alone,I’ve also looked at food prices on course and walked away…..

Perth last year fifteen smackers a certain food stall wanted for a soft drink and Aberdeen Angus ( chuckle) burger…

I laughed and walked away…..
