china should never have been allowed to join the wto 20 years ago

it cheated lied and stole its way to world prominence after staying out of the way for 50 years. it claimed socialist autarky until it finally realised something had to give so it then nicked what it could from the west and made cheap imitations with its docile cheap and terrified population and slave-labour camps

trump isnt fit to run a casino and wouldnt have made a nana from his own wits

20/30 years ago, china were buying up all the mines of precious metals, stuff you need to make stuff.

They were protect their supply lines and raw materials, has they knew, without these, you can’t make goods.

Made in china ,is on our stuff for a reason.you can win a war without firing a billet.

Trump can’t win this.

Because like all westernised countries,if they make a widget for a pound, but can buy it from china for 99p,our great businessmen, close the plant down and buy it from china.

USA,plus Europe,need china.

We are victims of our greed, but hey.

Free market capitalism, they tell us it’s the best

China has plenty of natural raw materials yet they are still greasing the palms of corrupt rulers in Africa for more. This is to ensure China has a ready supply of them in China; China is saving their own for itself. But, using raw materials acquired outside China eg Africa, to make important products eg steel, etc. Then China would dump these products eg steel, at below cost (heavily subsidized) onto the rest of the world stifling or killing off steel production in some countries. The UK steel industry was a recipient of this unfair sharp practice by China.

Now, China is trying to do the same with their electric vehicles which were heavily subsidized by the Chinese government undercutting those in America and Western Europe; China has a ready market of their own given its massive population  very skilled and adapt at producing cheap carp products o sell to the rest of the world after a "bargain" eg Temu and Shein to name two.

President Trump being a businessman could see this happening in the near future about China. The USA is merely addressing its disadvantaged position against some of the developed countries esp China who've been taking advantage of USA insatiable appetite for cheap consumer and manufacturing products.

I can understand what President Trump is doing. However, I do not agree with how he's doing it eg applying immediate and swinging tariffs indiscriminately eg on under-developed countries with 4th tier world economies. But, against China, Europe, Russia and some countries in the Far East is prudent. The American people need to learn not to live on credit for their personal indulgence.

Report impossible123 April 9, 2025 3:41 PM BST
I can understand President Trump taking the economic battle to China; China is dominating the world by supplying carp products and a massive trade surplus. Soon China will leapfrog the USA who are bankrupt (most Americans are in deficit and living on credit). But, leave the emerging economies alone eg Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia, etc, given their miniscule trade values in comparison to China and the EU.
Report 1st time poster April 9, 2025 5:06 PM BST
you cant blame china if people are willing to buy so called crap products, Chinese EV,s, techno are superior to what USA can produce at a price they can sell them
Report impossible123 April 9, 2025 5:59 PM BST
Chinese EVs are heavily subsidised by the Chinese government through grants, cheap loans, etc. The Chinese are doing the for EV what they did to the steel industry ie kill-off the competition; the Chinese government can afford it because of the massive balance of payment surplus.

The Chinese government will then use their economic and financial might to "bully" other nations eg S China Sea, Taiwan, some states in Africa, etc, to further cement their supremacy status. The Chinese are the modern day bullies.

The present Chinese government does not believe in democracy. It's authoritarian and its President is a megalomaniac. He publicly humiliated an elderly and one-time very powerful comrade in his party asking security to remove the elderly statesman from the front bench during a National Party Conference.

The Russians are militarily weakened; the Americans are sleepwalking; the Europeans are in denial. Whilst all this is happening China is striding towards world dominance and supremacy with the littlest of effort or resistance.

Hilarious as it shows trumps true colours - he has proven two or three times now that he is no better than a schoolground bully.

First time was with Zelensky, when Trump wanted his minerals. Sign me your minerals otherwise I will stop all military support and you'll be toast..

Second time, I'm going to annex / take over Greenland for their minerals.

Third time, I'm going to raise tariffs and stuff you. But when China stands up to him and does the same back to him , he gets a case of the jitters , gets scared and backs down.

You couldn't make it up.
He is certainly not a strategist , more a playground bully who's just been stood up to !!!

1tp, it's all very simple isn't it ?

In actual fact , if you are exporting something, in order to call it COO (country of origin), "x" percentage of the value of whatever you are exporting has to have been added in that country.
You can't just lie about it.
Report impossible123 April 10, 2025 8:36 AM BST
This subterfuge "strategy" of China exporting to the USA through a 2nd USA tariff country is very China; China does not play by the rule! and, they are doing it in immense quantity collectively - daily and repeatedly - on Ebay and Amazon by sending individual item/package under a certain threshold value to avoid paying a higher import tax.

I'd echo what President Trump said in his Press Conference eg a bit of pain is necessary; America 1st. But, eventually this disadvantage trade situation between America and China is solely America induced; the Americans have an insatiable appetite for Chinese imported goods esp the cheap tats.
Report oneten April 10, 2025 9:01 AM BST
Dear oh dear impossible. Without being rude, you and 1tp really have no idea of how business is done.

So are you predicting China is going to start sending millions of small packages by courier to the US to avoid import duties ?

It might work if you are buying an item off Ebay as a private person because the value is under a certain value and therefore exempt from paying import duty and vat.
However if you are a business importing the quantities required you will need to pay import duty plus vat.
Report impossible123 April 10, 2025 9:15 AM BST
'oneten', with respect I did not allude to that; China has been using 3rd economy countries eg Vietnam to produce their goods and then shipped to the USA. As for buyers at Ebay Chinese sellers have been dividing items to below a certain value to avoid paying additional taxes.

Why has China allowed Apple and Tesla (two American icons) to manufacture their products in China? A bargaining chip for the future. The Chinese could see this tariff "redress" coming, only the USA could not. In the UK the Chinese have taken over MG, and are producing EV costing significantly less than the Europeans.

The rich will get richer. This applies to the wealthy nations too, as long as their citizens sing from the same hymn sheet, neither immigrants with differing mindset and religion, culture and tradition nor welfare benefit and housing bills to siphon off the tarding surpluses.
Report CaptainCristy April 10, 2025 10:00 AM BST
US businesses have also ‘invested’ in Britain and sought to make monopolies by buying up businesses here and in Europe. So please, enough with the ‘yellow peril’.
Report oneten April 10, 2025 10:46 AM BST
Impossible , you say : "Why has China allowed Apple and Tesla (two American icons) to manufacture their products in China?"

In answer to your question , because that is the main driver of the Chinese economy, they need USD.

China is a 'poor' country with a low standard of living for the majority, hence low wages for workers and therefore it is cheaper for companies in the western world to build plants and employ local labour.  Min wage in China is around usd 400 a month, and cheaper in less developed / rural areas, compared to £2k a month here .
Report 1st time poster April 10, 2025 12:44 PM BST
ALL VERY SIMPLE YOU CANT JUST LIE ABOUT IT ?
but that's exactly what this week had been all about America accusing Chinese of using Vietnam/Mexico etc as proxies and funneling goods in to USA through the back door so to speak, add to why VIETNAM got wacked with a 94% tariff
if trump/USA are lying,there isn't a problem
Report impossible123 April 10, 2025 1:16 PM BST
China will only care for itself 1st or the ruling Communist Party; the people can come 2nd. As long as China can accumulate a continuous mega balance of payment surplus the Communist ruling party does not give a hoot; the common Chinese people will not revoke given the excessive force used on demonstrators and political activists.

China could replicate the above undemocratic behaviour on anyone (including the locals) under their rule in the future given the opportunity eg seizing the waters in S China Sea as their own only.

China has no legal right to be area/water at all.

I know China will want to be the world's economic and military leader. With that China will boss the world just as they've done in Hong Kong, S China Sea, and then probably Taiwan; China already has a firm footing in some parts of Africa with immense influence on the direction of those countries.

I've little doubt if given an uninterrupted rein like present China will increase their already immense dominance and influence further. Similarly, I've little doubt China will impose their form of Communism and political structure to the rest of the world.

China is subtle; President Trump is mouthy with only a 4-year managerial licence. Which will achieve their utmost objective?

Apple are kings of branding. Yes the design was game changing back in the day. There is not much differentiation now, the competition has caught up.

My point in this case is that Apple will know they can't hike by 50% and maintain loyalty. There are other premium brand alternatives. They have a massive margin on their products, and that's what would give first.

To some buying an apple product is like buying a Rolls Royce. The perception of superiority commands loyalty and snob value. Both combined = a healthy premium.
