King lands historic win in Japan History was made in Japan on Sunday when Rachel King became the first female jockey to ride a Grade 1 winner in the country aboard Costa Nova in the February Stakes at Tokyo.
Rachel King: became the first female rider to land a Grade 1 in Japan King was a former racing secretary to Clive Cox and rode six winners as an amateur and apprentice in Britain between 2009 and 2013. She has gone on to become one of the top riders in Australia and steered the Tetsuya Kimura-trained Costa Nova to win by three-quarters of a length in the mile dirt event.
King said: "I'm very proud to be the first female [to win a Grade 1 in Japan], but also very proud to win a Grade 1 in Japan as a jockey – and not just as a female jockey. I'm one of everyone and we’re treated the same, so I’m always thankful to Japan and all the supporters for welcoming me like that."
An incredible achievement and well done to a lovely girl done good. It just shows the heights the girls can now reach when given the opportunity, earned on merit through hard work and dedication.
I'd still give you a million to one (almost) about a girl riding a gr 1 over here. As It's still a very rare occurrence.. Not through any fault of their own , I hasten to add, but more to do with the "glass ceiling".
Yet over there she has been knocking them in for a while including for godolphin. It shows the disparity between the two regions isn't limited to just prize money.
Uk needs to catch up - and it isn't achieved through putting on more low grade racing.
