If they won't allow a dog to run one lap chasing a bunny, they won't allow a horse to be running over just shy of 4 miles carrying a 12-stone man over 23 fences and getting whipped for the privilege. Ominous signs.

It sometimes feels as if these so-called devolved governments are really just a test ground to see what they can get away with before whatever the agenda / policy is rolled out elsewhere.
I wonder what the leading question will be when they inevitably move onto horseracing?
Excuse me sir / madam, did you know that x number of racehorses lose their lives every year on British racecourse? Cruel, isn't it, do you think we should ban it?
We've listened to the people of Wales and we're proud to be the first country in the UK to ban horseracing. Hopefully the rest of the UK will follow.

It follows cross-party calls for a ban, a government consultation and a petition that attracted 35,000 signatures.

Anyone know how many signatures the counter-petition got, if there was one?
And when they say "a government consultation", is that where you just ignore any voices defending / supporting the sport?
Sounds like it...
But the Greyhound Board of Great Britain (GBGB), which regulates the sport, said the announcement had "nothing to do with greyhound welfare and everything to do with pressure from the extreme animal rights movement".
It said the Welsh government had failed to meet the industry in Wales or its regulator, and said its own consultation "highlighted the lack of evidence to support the case for a ban".
"We have engaged in the consultation process in good faith as regulator for the sport, but this statement is hugely disappointing," said chief executive Mike Bird.

George makes a good point in whether they paid attention to any counter petitions... It wouldn't suit their agenda to do so As others have said, they won't rest there, horse racing definitely next, perhaps starting with the point to point racing before moving onto Rules. I only say that because they might argue that the ptp has less veterinary facilities/back-up... I know the Welsh ptp scene is really active and hopefully will successfully resist any closure threats.

It appears that the Welsh greyhound industry, such as it is,is pretty amatuerish, judging from the comments of the owner of the 1 track there. They should have organised a much better campaign,as the article in the Rancid Post about it being banned was the first I heard about it.
Mind you, what effort did the Rancid Post put into supporting and publicising the situation with the Welsh goverment?

Where I'm absolutely astonished that has gone through, it's a million miles away from a horse race ban. Welsh greyhounds and the multi million pound horse racing industry, employing thousands upon thousands of people are polars apart.

they have closed down one dog track as far as I can see and I totally agree that is wrong and in hindsight I believe better fight could have been made.

Not much of a Trump fan but if there's an upside it's that we are beginning to see a shift of power away from the likes of self-appointed animal rights activist idiots.

Hope rescue was asked by the track owners for the details of the so-called 200 greyhounds they had rescued/re-homed from the track since 2018 so that they could check those facts, but Hope rescue refused because they knew those facts could be checked out by the track owners. This so-called Welsh Government are one big shower of s h i t, they want to take the rights and freedoms of people away. they are oppressive. Thats what you get from Labour now, this is NOT the Labour Party of old, it's an oppressive party and it's coming to England soon.

Almost all London's greyhound tracks have closed and it was hardnosed capitalists not woke lefties who closed Catford, Hackney, Harringay, Walthamstow, Wembley and Wimbledon. Dog racing is dying on its paws.

Again Ramruna you are right. Those tracks were sold because they became financial losers due to a
drop in interest in the sport. However, attempts by the owner of the Welsh track to revive dog racing
are going to be thwarted by a tiny minority of bleeding hearts and a government that enacts it's own
woke agenda without regard of the consequences ,or understanding of the subject matter in the first
place.
As has been said here by others, and this is the point of the thread, Horse Racing is next.

Horses face the same problem. Folkestone was closed for housing. Leicester sold land to developers and Kempton was due to be closed for the same reason. Not even Newmarket is safe.
What ought to concern us is not the animal lobby but reports that Cheltenham and Aintree are finding it hard to shift tickets.
And work visas for stable hands from the subcontinent are coming under the microscope so will trainers pay more to attract and retain native talent, or go out of business?

So many pet dogs (all breeds) are put down because their owners won't pay for life saving treatment. Maybe, if you want to own a pet dog, you should have a financial check or have to prove you have insurance, to cover vets fees. This is a much worse problem than a greyhound running around a track.

BHA vows to maintain political support for horseracing in Wales in light of Welsh government's ban on greyhound racing
The BHA said it was working to ensure horseracing retained its high level of political support in Wales as it responded to the shock news that greyhound racing is to be banned there.
Huw Irranca-Davies, the Welsh government's deputy first minister with responsibility for climate change and rural affairs, said in the Senedd (Welsh parliament) on Tuesday that the government hopes to ban greyhound racing "as soon as practically possible".
Dave Barclay, the promoter of the nation's only greyhound track, Valley, near Caerphilly, feared horseracing would be the next target.
The BHA said it had closely monitored developments around greyhound racing in Wales since the publication of “The Final Bend?” report by the Petitions Committee in December 2022.
In a statement the racing authority said: "That report contained a recommendation that when considering a ban on greyhound racing, the Welsh government should also look at other sports where animals compete.
"The Welsh government formally rejected that recommendation within their official response to the report in 2023, and horseracing has not been considered as part of the subsequent process. We’re not complacent, however, and we continue to update the Welsh government on our work to further raise equine welfare standards.
"Our industry is a sporting, cultural and economic asset to the Welsh nation and we believe the Welsh government recognises that contribution.
"We're proud of our record on horse welfare and the improvements the sport has made to the safety of our horses. The BHA firmly believes that when animal sport is well regulated it brings unrivalled quality of life and high standards of care for the animals involved.
“The BHA co-ordinates an active cross-party group for horseracing in the Senedd and will continue to use the group’s expertise as we work to ensure that horseracing retains its high level of political support in Wales."
There are three racecourses in Wales, at Bangor, Ffos Las and Chepstow, which stages the nation's most prestigious race, the Welsh Grand National. Notable trainers who are based there include Sam Thomas, Evan Williams, Rebecca Curtis and Christian Williams.
The Betting and Gaming Council (BGC) condemned the proposed ban on greyhound racing. A spokesperson said: "The BGC and our members are deeply disappointed by the announcement by the Welsh government of its intention to ban greyhound racing in Wales.
“Greyhound racing is a working-class sport, enjoyed by thousands, and this draconian move will cost jobs, hurt the economy, while depriving people of a long-established and legitimate source of joy.
"We're also concerned that this decision has not been based on evidence but instead taken to satisfy campaigners. BGC members are proud to support greyhound racing and contribute significant funds for the welfare of dogs."

Record-breaking trainer Mark Johnston has spoken about his deep frustration and sadness over an impending ban on greyhound racing in Wales and believes it should act as a “huge wake-up call” for horseracing.
Johnston, who is the winningmost trainer in the history of British racing, has an affinity with greyhound racing and enjoyed 20 winners during a three-year stint in the sport in the previous decade.
The former Kingsley Park trainer – an operation now run by his son Charlie – is a qualified vet and cannot make sense of the reasoning behind the intention to ban the sport in Wales, where Valley is the sole GBGB track.
The shock news was announced on Tuesday in a statement made in the Senedd by Huw Irranca-Davies, deputy first minister with responsibility for climate change and rural affairs.
Johnston, who wrote about the threats facing greyhound racing in Scotland and Wales in the Kingsley Klarion in April, said: “It’s desperately frustrating and concerning – it’s not just the ban but the reasoning behind it. It’s absolutely crazy and makes no sense. The whole thing is terribly sad and it is based on ignorance.
“The argument is about dogs getting injured when racing, and I hesitate to say it, but the injury rate in greyhounds is far less than in racehorses. Horseracing cannot assume that this fate won’t happen to us and has to be on the front foot.
“There is an inherent risk of injury for animals and humans in any activity. If you throw a stick for a dog there is an inherent risk, as there is going for a walk, and the faster you go and the more competitive it is the greater the risk of injury, but that is vastly outweighed by the positives.”
Johnston believes the horseracing industry should be offering more support to greyhound racing.
He said: “If greyhound racing can be banned in Wales, then it would be foolish to think horseracing is not at risk. This is a huge wake-up call. Even though they are saying the bill has been passed, horseracing should be supporting greyhound racing and doing something about it. I don’t think there has been anything like enough support as there should be.” https://www.racingpost.com/news/britain/mark-johnston-ban-facing-greyhound-racing-in-wales-makes-no-sense-and-it-should-be-a-huge-wake-up-call-for-horseracing-aQvwc6d4PfOC/
