JOCKEY Michael Purcell was suspended for 50 days and fined €2,000 after a contentious riding display in Cork yesterday.
Purcell was a central figure in a sensational out come to division one of the bumper where trainer Charles Byrnes saddled the first two home. The race was won by Byrnes' Alpha Royale (7/1) under a strong ride from Martin Ferris but that was completely overshadowed by the ride from Purcell on the second placed Laetitia, which was unfancied at 14/1. Purcell sat motionless on Laetitia for much of the home straight and although the rider's second crack of the whip inside the final furlong did connect, the rider appeared to do insufficient to help his mount close home, allowing Alpha Royale to win by a length. As the runners crossed the line, boos were audible from punters while the resultant stewards' enquiry found both trainer Byrnes and jockey Purcell in breach of Rule 212, deeming that both "did not take all reasonable and permissible steps to attain the best possible placing." |

Cant remember name of but Paul eddery rode a horse for Bryan smart years ago and it was the most blatant stoppage I have ever seen.

1996 for those who remember. Can't find it on youtube but it was part of the ITV7
SORBIE TOWER Only a Listed but it was probably the best race on a quiet Saturday. The trainer had been a guest on The Morning Line and tipped it c 10/3. Ladbrokes fielded against it. https://www.racingpost.com/results/28/kempton/1996-05-25/202868 What the write up does not tell you is that it stumbled out of the stalls. The horse had won its last three races. Richard Hughes rode it in its next two, the St James Palace and the Sussex Stakes, to finish 3rd and 4th, but Sorbie Tower never won again and cut little ice as a sire. |

cant. remember the horse but mark birch was riding a fav for sally hall at Ripon and yard expected it to hose up and after it was beaten was told birch would never get a ride for the yard ever again

The answer to original post will be an occurence where there is a conspiracy among all jockeys to let someone win, those races where a leader takes an extravagant lead and never looks like being caught, we've had quite a few. Some of them will be straight and unintentional but I say

The most blatant I have been personally involved in started in the Owners/Trainers bar at Yarmouth. Jimmy Quinn rode a mare for John Best up the backside of as many horses as he could. I had backed her and was going mad, told my mate I was going to the Stewards room, suddenly got a tug on my arm and John Best more or less pleaded with me to hang fire.
He said " Back her tomorrow night at Sandown and you will be alright" To my shame I did as he said and she dotted up under an unknown 7lb claimer @ 4/1. |

Remember Ice Saint at Fontwell in 2004.
Jockey Sean Fox was the jockey in question and the horse drifted alarmingly with the bookmakers on course and also on the exchanges. In the inquiry following the race the stewards judged that the jockey had STEPPED OFF HIS HORSE and under rule 157 he received a ban of just 21 days. Jock Mc Crakken was correct in telling everyone what fence the jockey would jump off! on course rumours suggested 'the milkman' was involved. This race came just 7 days from the Fallon race at Lingfield where he was found guilty of throwing away a race he should have won. |
