RIP. One of the top owner breeders of my whole racing life. Proper staying bred horses many of which went on to be top hurdlers if not good enough to make Stallions. I well remember a season when his 3yos with F Johnson Houghton had a 30% strike rate for a whole season. It was a sad day when his filly was DQ in the Oaks and he removed all of his horses from Gb.

Will his daughter Chaka take over his bloodstock business?

He will be sorely missed. A gentleman owner and very good for horseracing. He was always cheerful and polite.

In terms of wealth must be one the greatest examples of 'can't take it with you' for sure.

My earliest memories of racing had his name around it, takes me back.

Aga Khan, Khalid Abdulla and Lord Howard de Walden are names synonymous with horseracing. Despite their enormous wealth this group of gentlemen owners were never controversial, but respectful of horseracing and supporters of the sport. All are sorely missed.

Not only the owner / breeder of some brilliant racehorses, but also had amazing dulcet tones that sounded like James Mason.

Considering his success in racing and breeding it is ironic that he had no interest in the sport as a young man, it was thrust upon him after the death of his father. He is greatly respected for the way he developed the Costa Smeralda  and his legacy has been carried on in that high rise developments are banned and strict restrictions of building on the coast across the Island.

I believe he represented Iran as a skier in an Olympics? The world would be a better place if there were more like him.

Was at Longchamp when Zarkava won for him.

sad news. RIP.  His father, who owned Petite Etoile among others, was killed in a car crash. He was driving his new Facel Vega!!

He bought the Hotel (The Stand House) we used to have a pint in after racing at the Curragh and just handed it over free gratis to make improvements to the track.
Having criticized the old facilities at the track it was a good example of putting your money where your mouth is.

My memories all revolve around the wonderfully successful partnership the Aga Khan had with John Oxx. Produced some really memorable horses like Timarida, Enzeli, Sinndar, Azamour, Kastoria etc. Glorious times. Not sure why they split, which led to the eventual demise of Oxx as a trainer, but they were perfectly matched. Trainer who gave horses time, and an owner who had the patience to let that happen. The opposite of AMO Racing.

They split over Oxx's loyalty to JP Murtagh who the AK had a beef with for a few years but was eventually settled with the AK giving JPM horses to train.

So after "Tommy Carmody" trained that Irish Leger winner im guessing?

The OXX/AK split was because Oxx continued to use Murtagh for other rides when the AK had fired him.

Absolutely spot on isleham he was a superb 3 yo but surely would have been even better at 4

Quite amazing all 5 of the aga khans derby winners went on to win the Irish derby.

Never showed loyalty like Hamdan, Oxx was dropped, Johnson-Houghton was dropped, Cumani was dropped, jockeys galore dropped and sometimes reinstated,  after Alisya was disqualified pulled all horses out of Blighty, came back after a period and then pulled them all out again.
