The only reason to doubt that Galopin is the best this century at least is that you think that his opposition is the weakest for 20 years. He is much further ahead of his opponents than Kauto and Denman were.

Best Mate went on the win two Gold Cups after his King George win.

Best mate dodged all other races, brilliantly managed, but was it a great.
Would it have won 5 Betfair chases or 2 Hennessy off top weight.

Best Mate was a brilliant jumper, he was in a poor era though, it's hard to compare GDC to Kauto without thinking about Kauto's back catalogue which would make it a no contest...but it would be a good race to watch over 3.2 f....not so good over 2 miles!!!!Grin

if, or maybe when , the 3 gold ups are done will GDC will have a staue at cheltenham ? i wonder in this age of a slew of french bred / named horses from one particular yard he still wont have the public  affection and respect that best mate, desert orchid ,  had . kauto , french bed and from a dominant stable at the time was different ; his record stands up to all over different distances . without sounding too churlish i wonder how many watching today knew about jodami or florida pearl ?

I'll see how I go on the first 3 days. Got few nice AP bets which, if they win, or 2 of them win, will sort me out for the week. If they don't, and I'm sitting there on Friday afternoon needing a win. I would have no regrets punting GDC at 4/6. He reminds me of Denman

"The only reason to doubt that Galopin is the best this century at least is that you think that his opposition is the weakest for 20 years".    It's a fecking good reason though.

I think dis haarse is better than Dessie, Burrough Hill Lad and Denman of course he is.

Dessie carried weight but failed multiple times in the blue riband races the Champion Chase and Gold Cup. He was outclassed off level weights often.

I think he is the best Gold Cup horse since Best Mate in fact he reminds me of him but is a much more solid muscular horse than Matey who cruised better and had immense class. Galopin has also and an engine that keeps going.

Opposition tends to average out there are rarely a couple of great horses on a year it doent mean the horse in question on his own isnt a great.

It’s not every year you can have a Kauto, Denman or Moscow, Azertyuip, Well Chief year

Galopin is a stronger horse than Best Mate and could carry weight imo.

I hope Galopin starts next winter at Haydock rather than Punchestown where his record is inferior. In fact he’s a stone worse going right handed.

saxon ... i would think there is little chance of haydock . why bottom him on awful ground over that trip when his targets are later in the season ? ...i would suggest ludlow . after all , a ludlow winner was 2nd in the irish champion hurdle today !

windsor knot, I reckon you’re pulling my chain!
Anyway the Haydock race is the only appropriate race going left handed before Christmas unless he turns up at Wetherby in late October (zilch chance) or Newbury late November in the Hennessy (haha)
Tom Dreaper would have probably run him in all 3.

It is the trip that matters at least as much as the course. He is only a good horse over 2.5 miles, a very good one over 3 miles and one of the very best we have ever seen over 3.2 miles in March.

better than Dessie!  Dessie won The Racing Post Chase Irish National and Victor Chandler (when it was a hcap) off 12st.  It gave 2 stone and a beating over 2 miles and 3m 4f.

I didn't say that. Dessie and Kauto were much more versatile but over 3.25 miles at Cheltenham I think GDP would beat them. His last furlong was as quick as a flat race according to one time expert so how much did he have in hand? Over 3.25 miles I think he could have won 30 lengths and more on Saturday.

Sure Dessie hated Cheltenham

I think Galopin is arguably the best Gold Cup winner for a number of years.  It's a funny race.  The race can change completely in the last 2 furlongs and been a fair few very average winners.

I remember Cool Dawn winning most.  In my last employment at a Patent firm, before I took up gambling, it was owned by the best friend of one of the partners.  THey travelled back on the train to London with The Gold Cup.  I think it had the lowest or 2nd lowest handicap mark in the entire field and I don't think it ever won another race.  I remember thinking.  How the fook did that win!

Similar to the feeling I had having ran a book on the GC in school, and laying Nortons Coin for £2 @66/1. At least I laid unders Grin My Economics teacher had a bet with me on that race (not Nortons!), how times change. He used to watch racing with me in the Ladbrokes local to the school.

I’m not talking Dessie won 5 King Georges Kauto blah blah.

Galopin Des Champs and Best Mate had more class at the Gold Cup trip

Norton's Coin was available at 200/1 in places in the morning.  Classic aftertiming, but I do remember thinking there were worse ew shots and I had considered betting it.  But alas I never did.  Possibly I couldn't avail myself of the 200/1.

Kauto Star like Best Mate would not have been able to give masses of weight away it is down to a horses confirmation.

Class and speed is what counts.

We are talking Gold Cup trip anyway i am at least

Don't all great horses need to have one of the following attributes:
1, have a great adversary that they beat consistently
2, win good races over a range of trips
3, put in consistent weight carrying performances

GDC hasn't really any of these.

And if we're honest neither had Best Mate.
