It might well be me, but I do not understand what the BHA are doing at the moment.

We have meetings being lost everywhere and they are messing about rescheduling the Veterans Chase from last Saturday at Sandown to Warwick this coming Saturday. Yet, surely the chances of Warwick being on are very slim given the current poor weather in most places?

But what compounds this is how no extra AW fixtures are being put on! As recently as last year, we would have seen an extra AW fixture scheduled in circumstances like we have today.

I fear the BHA, like so much of this insane country, think if they are SEEN to be busy that will be enough.

But it will not, if racing starts having blank days and media editors fill up the vacant spaces where racecards would have been with other content, it is a slippery slope to racing becoming even more of a minority sport.

So, wake up BHA and do something that counts instead of fiddling while Rome burns!

The 2 AW fixtures for Saturday are both late afternoon starts. Not sure if they are being brought forward in case of jumps meetings being off. There surely should be a contingency plan for this. BHA Saturday scheduling changes that they brought in cost us last Saturday with a blank day. We don't want another blank afternoon. Changing Sandown to Warwick looks risky

Article yesterday says they're looking at moving some of Saturday's jump fixtures to other courses.

Don't think its just you The Knight, certainly some things seem as if they need more of a common sense approach. Someone on another thread mentioned how there were 2AW meetings in June but only 1 in January.

Also ITV last Saturday, you would have thought the TV crews would have gone to Southwell as it was All weather once the main meeting was abandoned.

Once a meeting is abandoned doesn't seem much point changing coverage to another track which is also quite likely to be abandoned.

You do wonder what information the courses are giving the TV crews eg possibly 'Yeah we are sure racing is going to go ahead' in order to secure TV coverage and a big day, when it is a 50/50 chance of racing?

Unfortunately you were correct The Knight and Warwick has already been cancelled for Saturday.

At last, they have put on two extra AW fixtures for the weekend. This should have been announced two days earlier to give time for more entries.

Why on earth they fiddled around with the Veterans Chase is beyond me.

The sort of thing these people seem to see as important.

Agree regarding the AW fixtures they should have been put on with more notice. Guessing (though hope I'm not thinking too much of them) the BHA must have a fair idea of the horses in training, with a data base that could run in the extra races and know they will get enough runners. As there is no point putting on extra fixtures for 2, 3 or 4 runner races really.

I would imagine the Veterans Chase, a lot of the trainers had their horses targeted bang on for the Sandown meet so they would want it to be run as quickly as possible and maybe were putting pressure on the BHA and this was the reason to try and stage it so soon. Though like you pointed out what was the point of rescheduling it for Warwick given how bad the forecast was and the likelihood of that fixture being abandoned.
Report Theoneandonly January 9, 2025 10:38 AM GMT
Sparrow, think the veterans chase is a really good initiative to be honest.

It helps keep older horses in training building rapport and favourites with the public and gives them the chance of a decent payday where young unexposed chasers can't compete. You can see trainers targeting them with horses and generally makes entertaining races with horses that have been round the block for a while.

For me it is a really good idea that the BHA have done, though as pointed out they should have been looking to rearrange when there was a half decent forecast, as to be fair to the weather forecasts they haven't been bad the last 2 weeks.

Ironically you have just backed up what The Knight is saying... When you are going to all that trouble of rearranging races fixtures etc, why rearrange them to a date that looks very unlikely to go ahead. Given the frosts / snow was forecast surely they should have rescheduled a bit further on in the calendar, though I understand it is hard with the British weather.

Duncan had it about right in terms of the Forum imvho, lots of comments and sarcasm from some who's only life appears to be this place.

Bottom line is the "Snarky" ( In Duncans words) threads are produced by those who either do not know or understand that moving meetings is rather more complicated than changing a soccer venue.

Makes you wonder at times why these genius's are on here rather than in positions crucial to a huge industry, maybe run out of organising pis$ ups in a Brewery?

Cagliari G...What are you doing with your snarky comments then? The same as you accuse others of, it would appear!

This forum is meant to be for comment and debate, but those like you and Duncan I. who seemingly lack the ability to add meaningful comment to topics and instead just snide at others have ruined it.

FYI, I retired when I was 51 having made a lot of money from my own company. Since then I have pursued my lifelong interest in racing through actually going racing a minimum of 3 to 4 times a week, every year. I also own shares in a number of syndicates. Thus, I imagine that I know just as much about racing as many of those who run it. What are your 'credentials'?

Also, I need no gambling fix. I bet to make money and have done so consistently, not least of all because I only bet once I have seen the horses in the flesh. Hence, no betting away from the tracks for me. Anyway, my big time gambling days ended after the 1/2 million I put up to start my own business paid off all those years ago.

Of course, it takes work to re-arrange a fixture. So why did the BHA waste time and effort re-arranging the veterans chase to a meeting that most of us could see was highly likely to be called off? Will they re-arrange it again when the weather improves next week - let us hope so! I'd suggest to Doncaster on 25th January or Cheltenham the same day. Let us see.

The BHA have been inept for many years now and continue to be so. To start with, I suggest those who defend them actually go racing and watch how poorly race-day procedures are now applied.

For example, allowing stable staff to lead highly-strung horses around the parade ring whilst talking on a mobile phone is eventually going to lead to a terrible accident. Then the BHA, anxious to repair the damage the media will do to the sport after such an accident, will finally act. And that is typical of the BHA, they are horribly reactive instead of pro-active - unless it is the innovation of Premier Racedays which has been a total, total farce.

I could go on, but I fear the concentration levels of those who have snided at my original post will not be mature enough to read anything else.

ITV is ready to be more flexible, Duncan. This is what ITV racing editor Richard Willoughby had to say following last Saturday's blank afternoon:

ITV Racing editor Richard Willoughby has called on the sport to be more flexible with race times and planning after British racing's free-to-air broadcaster had to pull the plug on Saturday's programme after the meetings at Sandown and Wincanton were cancelled on raceday due to frozen ground.

"In my opinion an all-weather meeting should be there to cover your backs at this time of year," said Willoughby. "When racing is susceptible to the weather, I don't understand – even before the start of the week – why one of the all-weather meetings isn't standing by in the afternoon. I imagine that's down to the introduction of premierisation.

"The other frustration is that there's not enough flexibility around race times. Once race times have been published, why isn't there more flexibility around moving times around? We want to show racing but they are the rules."
