Start Tour
There is currently 1 person viewing this thread.
Predominantly focused on the Flat, though there may be the odd jumps pick thrown in.
Prediction:
The thread will be a slow burner, with plenty of selections from left field or on the speculative side, with a low strike rate in terms of winners (2024 win strike rate was 9%), and virtually all the selections will be 5-1 or bigger at the early odds.
The odds quoted will be what's on oddschecker with at least one of the main firms at the time of posting, usually late morning / early afternoon.
As I will need all the help I can get, I am going to claim B.O.G where applicable but obviously will keep a close eye on that with some firms now withdrawing the offer.
DISCLAIMER: I'm just a guy putting up a couple or so selections most days at working men's prices with a bit of reasoning, so if the thread fails, well, what can I say other than it's a tough old game!

Mini Magna, 1pt EW @ 40-1, 4.30 Newcastle (4 PLACES)
Mini Magna arrives here off a 74-day break and having run a shocker at Southwell (raced ride, towards rear throughout, beaten 22L) when last seen, so he can only be a speculative selection, however, if he can revive then he's become very well-handicapped being over a stone lower in the weights than for his peak efforts from last autumn which included a close 4th of 13 at York (5f, g-s).
He hasn't looked an entirely lost cause this season considering the ground has probably been quicker than ideal when he has raced and he doesn't always help himself by racing keenly, and he didn't run too badly when selected at Nottingham (5f, g-f) in July, where he finished 4th of five, beaten 3L, rallying after having become outpaced.
His standout effort from six starts on the all-weather came when finishing second off a 20lb higher mark (RPR 86) at Southwell (5f) in March of last year to Ziggy's Missile, who would win again over that C/D later that month off an 11lb higher mark, so the selection is evidently capable of running well on Tapeta.
Smiling, 1pt EW @ 16-1, 6.45 Dundalk (4 PLACES)
Smiling is seemingly Aidan O'Brien's second-string in this fillies' Listed contest, with Wayne Lordan on Ballydoyle's other runner Ballet Slippers, but there's only a pound between them on official ratings and neither is especially fancied in the betting currently.
Smiling comes here on the back of a career-best effort in a Naas fillies' Listed race, where she finished a close second having been drawn widest of the seventeen runners, on what was her second attempt over a mile, and although that might not have been the strongest race of its type with a 91-rated, 33-1 shot winning, the other principals came from low draws and there was a gap to the fourth-placed filly.
The selection still looked quite raw / green at Naas even though it was her 7th start, and while she left the impression last time that she will stay further than a mile, this scopey sort still looks open to improvement. The draw again hasn't been kind but hopefully Declan McDonagh will just go forward and ride her prominently.

* Specsavers for me, O'Brien runs three in that Listed contest, the other being Tea Rose, ridden by Ronan Whelan, so Smiling probably the third string judged on jockey bookings.
Yes, a frustrating day Virgin with both picks being run out of the places late on.
Mini Magna was never too far away and kept on well, finishing under 2L behind the winner.
Smiling fared best of the O'Brien trio and might have finished in the places but for the winner cutting across in front of her and causing her to check her momentum just as she was trying to rally.

Harswell Angel, 1pt EW @ 22-1, 2.00 Doncaster
A chance is taken on Harswell Angel at the prices even though he does have a couple of big questions to answer, obviously whether he'll handle the heavy ground having last time out won a Redcar (6f) novice on good ground on his turf debut, and whether he'll consent to run in a straight line having not done so then having carried the 2-7 shot he got the better off across the track. The selection looked to be travelling better than the favourite on that occasion from over 2f out and won despite hanging badly left with his jockey unable to ride a finish as he struggled to keep his mount from hanging into the favourite.
The colt he got the better off then, who had previously run well behind useful sorts in a couple of Haydock novice races, has been allotted an initial mark of 77, so Harswell Angel's opening mark of 78 looks fair, and interesting to see how he gets on here, for a yard with a 33% strike rate (3-9) in the past fortnight.
Parlando, 1pt EW @ 12-1, 6.30 Wolverhampton (4 PLACES)
Parlando ended up well beaten on his belated reappearance at Nottingham recently but the run was probably needed and he wasn't knocked about once held. He's of interest back on the all-weather, and although he's yet to win in this sphere after seven starts, he's run some good races having recorded RPRs of 87, 92, 90, 94, 93 and 88 (twice).
His official rating is currently 80, a pound below his last winning turf mark, and while there's a concern that he may need another run or two to hit top form, and that Newcastle would be preferable having recorded his peak efforts there, a chance is taken at double-figure price, though it has to be hoped that he gets the breaks from the inside draw.

Just Jump, 1pt EW @ 11-1, 2.40 Dundalk
The market is screaming that Just Jump is very much the third string of the Hogan-McAuley trio in this 5f handicap, with their other two runners being ridden by Colin Keane and Chris Hayes, which may well prove to be significant, but I'm going to be sucked in at the prices as his latest effort here in a claimer last week over the 6f trip looked a decent one, and although he does have to a bit to find with his stablemate Dontspoilasale, whom he reopposes on 4lb better terms for the 3L that he finished behind that rival when they finished second of 4th of the 13 runners, the selection's effort can probably be marked up based on how the race panned out.
The cheekpieces that Just Jump wore then for the first time are retained and he looks worth another try at 5f based on that latest evidence.
Marbush, 1pt EW @ 25-1, 5.10 Dundalk (4 PLACES)
Marbush has been a selection the last twice and it's not easy to pick him again after his latest effort here over a mile when he was readily left behind having been well positioned. He seemed to run well over that trip here three starts back in a 0-91 contest when aggressively ridden, and then next time over the 7f trip here he missed a beat at the start, then raced keenly before a move around the outer came to nothing.
He's now off a 17lb lower mark than he started the year on (when trained by Archie Watson), and I'm going to give him another chance in the hope that from a wide draw he gets the sort of aggressive ride in this 0-72 over this shorter trip as he did when leading better class opponents for much of the way in that aforementioned one mile 0-91 contest.
Mythical Rock, 1pt EW @ 9-1, 5.40 Dundalk (4 PLACES)
Mythical Rock has been running well of late in defeat over shorter trips on various ground, and hopefully he can give another good account switched back to Polytrack, having placed here three times from four previous attempts including over today's 10.5f trip.

A bad day at Black Rock...
Denis Hogan seemed to have a strong hand with three decent chances in the opening nine-runner handicap but none made the first three, with the selection Just Jump losing 4th place late on to his stablemate Dontspoilasale.
Marbush, another Hogan-trained runner, was disappointing again and has failed to build on an encouraging run four starts back in a higher grade.
Mythical Rock was dropped in from his wide draw on this step back up in trip, and in a steadily-run affair, wasn't well positioned when finding his path blocked up the home straight.

Galactique, 1pt EW @ 14-1, 12.35 Cheltenham
Juvenile hurdler time and I'm going to take a chance on Galactique, who faces a much stiffer task here competing over hurdles away from Fontwell (2m1.5f) for the first time.
Following a well-beaten run at Goodwood (14f, g-f) on his racecourse dubut in the summer, he finished second to one of today's rivals Lord on his hurdling debut (on g-s) in August, and he probably didn't have to improve to win on good ground at odds-on with that initial hurdling experience behind him.
What makes him of interest here is his win (on g-s) under a penalty last time when he defeated a potentially useful recruit off the Flat, namely Winston Junior, whose standout effort had come in a Racing League handicap at Chepstow (12f, g-s) off a mark of 86 when finishing second to Beylerbeyi, who proved a revelation when stepped up in trip, culminating in Cesarewitch glory.
It has to be said that Galactique had the benefit of hurdling experience over that rival and his 7lb penalty was mostly offset by a Freddie Mitchell's 5lb claim, but Winston Junior was well-backed on his stable debut for Faye Bramley and appeared to know his job.
Galactique is back in trip and encountering different ground but remains unexposed after just four career starts and interesting to see where his limitations lie.

A shocker from Galactique who was beaten a long way from home, so whether that's as good as he is or the ground was a major issue for him, time will tell.

Moab, 1pt EW @ 14-1, 1.32 Fontwell
Moab doesn't look the biggest so perhaps there's a reason why his jumps-orientated yard having campaigned him on the flat this year, however, he did make the frame on his hurdles handicap debut at Wincanton (1m7f, g-s) in December when last seen under NH rules so has displayed some aptitude for this code.
He appreciated the step up to 14f when losing his maiden tag in a handicap at Southwell last month, and I'm not convinced the step up to two miles was the reason for his disappointing run back there on his latest start when finishing last of six having been sent off the 7-4 favourite.
Hopefully that latest effort was just a blip, and whilst the all-weather may prove to be more his bag, a chance is taken at the odds as he did look in good nick when winning the time before with something in hand, and today's slightly longer trip over hurdles may suit him better in this sphere.

I thought Moab had it in the bag between the last two but it wasn't to be, but he kept trying to the line once headed by the winner after the last, and pulled 20 lengths clear of the third.

Raging Al, 1pt EW @ 66-1, 1.30 Exeter
I'm going to have a crazy pick on Raging Al, who was a selection on the thread last time on the flat when I wrote:
Raging Al didn't last long with the Ralph Beckett yard, but he didn't run too badly on his second handicap start for his new connections at Newbury (12f, g-f) last time, and although that was just a five-runner affair, the second, Naasma (whom he meets here on 3lb better terms for a half-length deficit), has won since. It's hard to be sure whether racing on quicker ground was the reason for that better effort (in which case he could do with the ground drying out) or if it was due to his yard being a bit better form as they had sent out a recent winner at the time.
His subsequent 46-day absence is a concern but a chance is taken at the prices that he goes the right way from that improved showing, as this will be just his 6th career start.
==========
He might have had excuses at Windsor as he was returning from a short break (which admittedly he is today too), was keen, and although he was looking in a spot of bother up the home straight, he wasn't helped by losing his position against the rail and then being denied a clear run at a track which might not have been ideal for him.
He switches code today and this doesn't look easy with high profile and in-form jump yards represented here by potentially useful sorts, and the selection may be one for handicap hurdles in due course, but I'm going to take a chance at big odds because he should be fine for stamina in this discipline (he's out of a useful two-mile handicap winner who was also a Listed winner over 12.5f), the application of a hood may help as he has been keen on occasions, and a good 3lb conditional takes his first ride for a yard that has been amongst the winners of late.
Donna Nook, 1pt EW @ 15-2, 6.40 Newcastle
Donna Nook remains of interest on the all-weather despite having been a bit disappointing last time at Lingfield (one mile) when finishing only 4th of 5. Her two previous all-weather starts had yielded a win at Dundalk (7f) as a 2YO when trained by Ger Lyons, and a good second of ten at Southwell (one mile) in September from the widest draw off a 3lb higher mark than today's, when finding only a William Haggas-trained filly too good who was winning for the third time this year.

I said Raging Al was a crazy pick and unfortunately they proved to be prophetic words because having decided he wasn't happy being restrained out the back, he soon made rapid headway to go a few lengths clear before promptly slamming the breaks on approaching to the second flight and sending his jockey flying.

Soul Seeker, 1pt EW @ 28-1, 7.15 Newcastle (4 PLACES)
Soul Seeker, who's approaching his ninth birthday, has plummeted down the ratings this year since joining Philip Kirby from David O'Meara, however, there have been hints of late that he may not be an entirely lost cause - over the 5f trip here two starts back when showing up well for a fair way, and last time at Wolverhampton (5f) from a wide draw when never involved but did make a little late-headway.
Even if he is able to find some form again now that his mark is in danger of bottoming out, an obvious concern this evening is the 6f trip with all nine of his career successes having come over 5f, mainly on stiff tracks, but a chance is taken each-way at the odds, as if he is to revive then it may be at this venue, albeit that may be when he's back at 5f.

Jazz Dreamers, 1pt EW @ 33-1, 4.55 Dundalk (4 PLACES)
The negatives aren't hard to find regarding the chance of Jazz Dreamers, who's currently only rated 41, has uninspiring form figures, has a wide draw to overcome and his stamina to prove for 10.5f, but he makes a little each-way appeal returning from a 71-day break, having run well on his reappearance at Roscommon (7.5f, good) in May, when finishing 3rd of 15 from a wide draw, in what was the quicker of the two divisions, and perhaps his effort could be marked up having been the only one to have matched strides with the winner (who was backed at prices with Wayne Lordan booked), before losing second place close home, though admittedly it was an advantage to be ridden prominently on that card. He was rated 54 then and the wheels seem to have come off since, though wasn't entirely disgraced when last seen at Laytown in September.
He has won three times on turf in his career, and made the frame here over a mile in 2023 when rated 59, so has had the ability to be competitive in a 0-60 handicap such as this which doesn't appear to have much depth to it. Regarding stamina, he could only finish 6th of 14 on his previous attempt over this C/D, having raced keenly, but has won over 9f and appears to stay at least 9.5f having placed twice in big fields around Gowran Park.

Crackinthunder, 1pt EW @ 10-1, 5.15 Newcastle
It will be surprising if Crackinthunder doesn't win races for Jim Goldie having run well to finish third at Musselburgh (5f) in August on his turf debut and return from eight months off. The concern is that he hasn't built on that effort in two starts back over that C/D when a hood was repplied and prominent in the betting, though wasn't well drawn on the first occasion.
He's eligible for weaker races than this one and races from out of the handicap, while having to prove himself on the all-weather (his three previous runs here came when huge prices and qualifying for a mark), but a chance is taken at the odds with the hood discarded, as that good effort came the only time he hasn't worn one.

Fashionelle has been a selection a couple of times previously on the thread, and she gets the vote again here being perhaps a bigger price than might have been expected reopposing Young Endless, to whom she went down by a short-head last time here over the 16.5f trip. The drop back in distance to 14f shouldn't be an issue having twice run well over C&D in the spring in higher grades.

Fashionelle (8-1) again found Young Endless (and one other) narrowly too good.
Crackinthunder raced close up, as did the first two, but having over-raced a little, he was readily left behind from 2f out.

Woodleigh, 1pt EW @ 9-1, 7.00 Southwell (4 PLACES)
Woodleigh had shaped better than the bare result over 7f at Wolverhampton in May when with a different yard, when he did well to finish third having been posted three-wide, in a contest where the first two home had been patiently ridden. He has continued to generally run well for his current yard, including at this track where he got a Racing Post "eyecatcher" comment over the mile trip in August having again raced wide before running on well to finish 4th of 13. He won last time at Redcar when upped to 10f and racing beyond a mile for the first time.
The selection is upped further in trip to 11f this evening and hopefully has more to offer at this sort of distance, and while he's off a 4lb higher mark this time following his latest win, he's off the same rating as for that course "eyecatcher" effort, and off a pound lower mark than for that third place at Wolverhampton in May. Kevin Stott, who rode the gelding for the first time when winning at Redcar, retains the ride.

The Cola Kid, 1pt EW @ 14-1, 6.55 Wolverhampton (4 PLACES)
The Cola Kid has looked in good form the last twice, over C/D last month from the widest draw when he didn't have the easiest of trips but led over a furlong out before being headed close home by one who was following up a last-time-out win, and last time at Kempton over 6f when finishing off well into 4th place, and the third has won since.
The draw hasn't been kind again but hopefully he can give another good account granted a reasonable trip.
How's The Guvnor, 1pt EW @ 13-2, 7.40 Newcastle (4 PLACES)
How's The Guvnor on his latest start is another who ran well in the face of a tough trip around Wolverhampton (7f), doing well in the circumstances to finish 3rd of 12 and beaten one length, in a contest where the first two home were ridden patiently.
He's been easy to back this morning, perhaps with there being a stamina query stepped back up to a mile on a stiffer track, but he could be finding his level again having plummeted down the weights this year for his respected yard, having initially been rated in the high-80s when trained by Clive Cox.

Faster Bee, 1pt EW @ 22-1, 4.30 Wolverhampton (4 PLACES)
I'm going to select Faster Bee again, who's been a selection a couple of times on the thread including when last seen in August at Lingfield (AW) when I wrote:
I'm going to give another chance to Faster Bee, who's been ridden by Miss Remie Morgan in amateur races since joining Fergal O'Brien. He probably shaped better than his finishing position suggested on his stable debut at Wolverhampton (8.5f) in April, having done plenty from a wide draw before being headed over a furlong out, losing second place inside the final furlong and then weakening out of it. He has found life tough in three starts since on turf but in higher grades and on a couple of occasions over a trip that might stretch his stamina.
The selection doesn't always help himself by racing too keenly but if he can run a more efficient race then this contest looks a more realistic task back on the AW off his reduced mark.
============
Faster Bee ran okay then to finish 4th and hopefully the return to this track can suit better, being 9lb lower than for that encouraging stable debut over C&D in April. Hopefully fitness won't be an issue back from 3 months off coming from the Fergal O'Brien yard, though it has to be hoped he doesn't race too freely in reapplied blinkers.

Volendam, 1pt EW @ 25-1, 2.33 Southwell
There's a bit to be taken on trust here with Volendam, who's returning from two months off having left Juile Camacho following a disappointing run at Newcastle (7f) in September, when backed into 9-2 from an opening show of 6-1. It perhaps wasn't a surprise to see the market support returned to Newcastle, following three runs on turf, having twice run respectably at the Gosforth Park venue over 5/6f earlier in the year when twice finishing runner-up in maidens to male opposition.
The hood she's worn since her second start is left off today on her debut for Tony Carroll, so could do with settling better than has sometimes been the case kept to 7f, but she looks on a fair mark based on those earlier all-weather efforts and interesting to see which she goes for her new yard.
Handle With Care, 1pt EW @ 12-1, 5.10 Chelmsford (3 PLACES)
I'm going to take a chance on the fitness of Handle With Care, whose only run to date over 7f came on Lingfield's Good Friday card when finishing second of 14 in a valuable fillies' class 4 handicap, when perhaps from a wide draw her effort could be marked up based on how the race panned out. Her three runs after were on turf over 6f, running okay at Windsor and Newmarket, before a below par run at Leicester in July when last seen.
The selection has run well on all five of her all-weather starts having won over 6f at Lingfield in March, and finished close up on the other four occasions, so hopefully has more to offer in this sphere over 7f, and is off a mark just a pound higher than for that creditable Good Friday effort, with Toby Moore enlisted to take off 7lb today.

Parlando, 1pt EW @ 10-1, 7.30 Chelmsford (4 PLACES)
I'm selecting Parlando again who was a pick on his latest start at Wolverhampton when I wrote:
He was never involved at Wolverhampton though probably went into a few trackers having made some late-headway under tender handling, and I've just seen that the jockey was actually given a ten-day ban for failing to obtain the best possible position, even though imo it appeared he didn't have anywhere to go up the home straight.
Whether this will be his day, particularly if ridden the same way again and on the back of what happened last time regarding the running and riding enquiry, and perhaps Newcastle is more suitable for him, but he's likely to be winning at some point on the all-weather, so a chance is taken at a double-figure price.

Gunalt Wavelength, 1pt EW @ 18-1, 3.45 Southwell
Gunalt Wavelength comes here on the back of an odds-on defeat at Catterick (6f, soft) last time in a five-runner nursery, where she hung left and flashed her tail before being comfortably brushed aside by the winner. She's perhaps not the most solid proposition on the back off that now upped again in grade, however, she's of interest back on Tapeta, having run well on her sole all-weather start to date at Wolverhampton (7f) in August, where she stuck to her task well having led over a furlong out before going down by under a length, with a subsequent all-weather nursery winner over a length further back in third place.
There will be less competitive races than this one for her to run in on the all-weather, but given both her siblings showed their best form on an artificial surface, albeit one of them remained a maiden, interesting to see if the return to this sphere can prompt a better effort.
Just Jump, 1pt EW @ 8-1, 5.25 Dundalk
I'm going to select Just Jump again, who was picked last time when I wrote:
===============
Just Jump faded out if it to finish 5th of the nine runners, however, it looks a better effort now in light of his two stablemates from that contest who finished 4th and 6th, both having won since. This is an ease in grade for the selection and blinkers are given a try.

Wizard Of Odds, 1pt EW @ 11-1, 12.35 Fairyhouse
Juvenile hurdler time and whilst the Willie Mullins-trained French import Narciso Has is expected to be tough to beat according to the betting, I'm going to take a chance at the prices on Wizard Of Odds. He doesn't face an easy task to reverse Down Royal form from last time with Mange Tout, but he does have a 4lb pull and the forecast softer ground shouldn't bother as his peak effort on the level came when finishing second and pulling clear with a subsequent Group 2-placed rival at Naas on soft-heavy back in the spring over 7f.
He didn't go after for his previous yard, but he's been back in good form since joining William Durkan, winning on his hurdles debut at Cork, before that creditable second last time.

Rainwater, 1pt EW @ 11-2, 2.57 Kempton (4 PLACES)
Rainwater was a winner on turf during the summer and prior to that his run over today's C/D in May could be marked up, having been drawn and raced wide, and in the circumstances he seemed to do well having disputed the lead into the final furlong before losing second place inside the final hundred yards and dropping to 4th, beaten under two lengths.
Rainwater was given a four-month break following a lesser effort at Hamilton in July, and he returned to action with a creditable effort at Wolverhampton (7f) three weeks ago, no match for one that was sent off at odds-on in a handicap but doing well to hang on for second place having been on a contested pace.
He's eiligible for slightly weaker races than this one but is off a mark just a pound higher than for his C/D effort, so hopefully can give a good account provided he goes the right way from his recent return.

Further Measure, 1pt EW @ 12-1, 12.30 Lingfield
Further Measure didn't shape too badly up to a point in a stronger race than today's when returning from a break last time at Wolverhampton (14f, lost a shoe). This C&D winner is 2lb below his last winning mark so hopefully can give a good account here if taking a step from that return to action.

Moonhall Lass, 1pt EW @ 18-1, 5.25 Dundalk (4 PLACES)
Moonhall Lass is still a miaden after twenty starts but she was running well in defeat on occasions for her previous yard in the first half of the year, and the effort that I noted was her 4th of 8 at Limerick (7f, good) in June when although ultimately beaten 9L by the winner, she had been in a clear lead under 2f out but had stuck to the inner on a day when it became apparent that racing away from the inside rail was an advantage, yet it was only late that she lost second place.
Moonhall Lass has yet to offer much in four starts since joining Pat Murphy including at this venue the last twice, but her mark has dropped a stone in that time and it could be she's needed a few runs back following a ten-week break. She did finish runner-up twice over 5f at this course as a juvenile last December when she was no match for Eclairage on both occasions, but that speedy filly has shown herself to be quite useful round here and is now rated in the 90s.
Plantadream, 1pt EW @ 40-1, 6.10 Kempton (4 PLACES)
Plantadream is approaching his eleventh birthday so whether he's up to a mark of 85 these days is a big question, but he didn't shape too badly off his lower turf mark last time at Newmarket when although finishing only 6th and beaten over 7L by the easy winner, he was only 2L behind the Gosden-trained runner-up who has won subsequently, and there were a couple of solid yardsticks (Mythical Guest and Dutch Decoy) in third and fourth.
He makes some each-way appeal at a big price back at Kempton where he's run well on all four of his previous visits, having won his maiden here back in the day, and posted a couple solid efforts when last seen here early last year, when he didn't finish far behind Talis Evolvere (whom he meets on slightly worse terms this evening), before an even better effort when going down by a neck to King's Code, who won this year's London Middle Distance Series Final at the course.
Plantadream has a tricky draw to overcome but he tends to be waited with and there are a few in this who can get on with it, so hopefully he won't be disgraced if finding this run to suit.

Cressida Wildes, 1pt EW @ 40-1, 6.00 Chelmsford
I'm going to give another chance to Cressida Wildes who was selected last time at Newcastle when I wrote:
Cressida Wildes is a 3YO filly up against some grizzled old track performers but she makes some appeal at the prices. She showed a game attitude when overcoming interference to win at Yarmouth (5f, good) in July, and she's since returned from a break with a couple of respectable efforts - finishing second of 11 at Bath (5f, g-f), and last time at Yarmouth (5f, g-s) not beaten far into fifth having not had the clearest of runs.
The selection could only finish 4th of 6 as a juvenile on her only previous visit to tonight's C&D, but was only beaten 1.25L, and while there are mixed messages from that form, the winner has yet to run a bad race here, and the second kept on improving afterwards and is now rated 100.
============
Cressida Wildes was a bit disappointing at Newcastle in the sense that she got a lovely tow into the race before not seeing it out as well as some, but I just wonder if a well-run contest at that stiffer track might have stretched her stamina. It could be that she's a bit better on turf but she's generally been running well this year (including a C/D win back in January in a little novice) and some of her form has worked out okay, so she makes a little each-way appeal at the prices.

Blazing Son, 1pt EW @ 16-1, 4.45 Newcastle (4 PLACES)
Blazing Son's record of just one place from seven starts in class 4 company is a glaring negative to his chance here, but he makes a little each-way appeal at the prices having perhaps shaped better than the bare result suggested when finishing third and beaten 7L over this evening's trip of 7f here two starts back, when he made the running under today's jockey Oliver Carmichael (7) into a slight headwind, and he had one of tonight's rivals Al Muqdad (who admittedly didn't get a clear run) in behind.
He had won over the 7f trip here earlier in September off a 2lb lower mark (when a 3lb claimer rode), and it's easy enough to forgive his latest start at Doncaster where he was poorly drawn on heavy ground. Hopefully he can give another good account back at the Gosforth Park venue, where he has yet to finish out of the frame in eight visits (three wins and five places).
Angel Of England, 1pt EW @ 14-1, 5.45 Newcastle
Angel Of England hasn't offered much in a couple of starts back here in class 5 company following a seven-month break but the runs might have been needed and he's of interest dropped into class 6 company off his reduced mark having posted some decent efforts to make the frame off marks in the low-70s here and at Wolverhampton during the last all-weather campaign, one of which came when wearing blinkers, which are reapplied here.
Hover On The Wind, 1pt EW @ 22-1, 6.45 Newcastle
Hover On The Wind looked in really good form in May following a couple of pipe-openers in April having joined Paul Midgley, defeating 12 rivals at Beverley (5f, g-f), and then what looked a big mark-up effort in defeat at Pontefract, when doing well to finish second having endured a tough trip in a strongly-run race.
His form went the wrong way after but it means he returns from a 72-day break off a 7lb lower mark, so if the pause has restored him back to form then he's looking well handicapped off a mark 4lb lower than for his Beverley win. He does have to prove that he can be as effective on the all-weather having made the frame just once from five starts on synthetics, but his form in the spring would suggest the stiff 5f here could suit.
Bucky Larson, 1pt EW @ 12-1, 7.00 Dundalk (4 PLACES)
I selected a ten-year-old the other night when Plantadream ran well to make the frame at Kempton, and I'm going to take a chance on another one here, namely Bucky Larson. This three-time C&D winner suggested there may be another win in him on his penultimate run and stable debut here over the 7f trip when returning from five months off and finishing second to a well-backed Charles Byrnes-trained rival, with a couple of subsequent winners behind him in 4th and 5th, including Hell Left Loose, who repposes on worse terms.
Bucky Larson didn't back that effort up kept to 7f here last time but the race might have come soon enough just 12 days on. He's had 37 days off since and returns to the mile trip, so hopefully this veteran can give another good account at this course.

Robusto, 1pt EW @ 16-1, 7.30 Kempton
Robusto dropped right away in the home straight last time at Southwell in the handicap won by the progressive New York Minute, and a 5lb pull in the weights with that rival doesn't seem much for being beaten over thirty lengths, however, the selection was returning from six months off so the run might have been needed and he didn't shape too badly up to a point having been prominent for most of the journey.
Robusto hasn't won since being successful over C/D off today's mark in July of last year, but he went close to winning on four occasions on the all-weather in the first half of this year and he looks fairly handicapped on that evidence, so in the hope that his recent return to action has advanced his fitness, he makes a bit of appeal each-way at a double-figure price.

Penfolds Grange, 1pt EW @ 28-1, 8.30 Chelmsford
Penfolds Grange was a selection on the thread in April on the back of a creditable run in a Wolverhampton (8.5f) novice when under a penalty he finished third behind two who are currently rated 85 and 79. He was outclassed in class 2 company the day I selected him at Sandown, before making the frame at 33-1 when drawn widest of 14 at Chester (7.5f, good). He only ran twice more for Harry Eustace, disappointing at Redcar on easier ground, before not being disgraced finishing in midfield in a Racing League handicap back at Wolverhampton (8.5f) having not been helped by clipping heels soon after the start.
It remains to be seen which way he goes for his current yard having left a young trainer on an upward trajectory, but he ran okay on his second start for Mark Pattinson last time out over C&D in a slightly higher grade than this evening's when finishing fifth of ten, and he makes some appeal each-way here at biggish price in the hope that he can build on that latest start.

Cooramook, 1pt EW @ 18-1, 7.30 Wolverhampton
Cooramook twice ran well at Lingfield (AW) in August / September over 6/7f when ridden prominently, and it's possible to excuse the two disappointing runs over 7f since at Kempton and Lingfield (AW) when never involved from wide draws, though didn't shape too badly last time as she did make a little late headway against the usually unfavoured far rail.
She might not be well drawn here in eight given they're quickly into the turn over the 7f trip, but interesting to see if they return to more prominent tactics, with the cheekpieces which she wore for the only time for the first of those two good Lingfield runs, reapplied.

Faster Bee, 1pt EW @ 14-1, 1.42 Lingfield (4 PLACES)
Faster Bee hasn't been one of my better selections thus far having been selected a few times without any return. I thought he shaped better than the bare result on his debut for Fergal O'Brien in April at Wolverhampton (8.5f) but has failed to place in five starts since off falling marks, however, he might have had excuses on occasions including last time back at Wolverhampton when the run might have been needed following a 3-month break.
He's been ridden by Miss Remie Morgan (7) for all his starts in amateur rider contests since joining O'Brien, but is out of amateur company today and has Kieran Shoemark taking over in the plate. Faster Bee does have to prove his stamina for 10f, particularly as he can be keen, but shaped as though he would stay further when keeping on for 4th over the mile trip here on his penultimate start.
Handle With Care, 1pt EW @ 11-1, 5.00 Wolverhampton
Handle With Care was a selection on the thread last time out when I wrote:
============
Handle With Care was disappointing at Chelmsford but the run might have been needed and had been keen early before racing wide into the home straight. She's back down in grade this evening and has made the frame on her both her previous visits to Dunstall Park over the 6f trip.

Kathleen Mary, 1pt EW @ 10-1, 4.05 Kempton (4 PLACES)
Kathleen Mary isn't obviously bred for 12f being by Threat and out of a winning sprinter but she stays at least 10f having placed over that trip twice in May / June on the AW at Lingfield and then notably at Chelmsford, where it looked a good effort to finish runner-up to a well-bred filly trained by Roger Varian, who was then handed an initial mark of 80 but hasn't been seen since, and over five lengths back in third was a 76-rated filly was subsequently finished in the first four on three occasions off marks in the low-70s.
Kathleen Mary seemingly hasn't gone on in two starts since but soft ground might not have been ideal at Windsor in July, and was returning from over four months off and had the widest draw when finishing 6th of 12 at Chelmsford (10f) thirteen days ago.
Hopefully that recent pipe-opener has sharpened her up as she looks fairly handicapped off a mark of 70, and looks worth a try over 12f.
Devilment, 1pt EW @ 12-1, 6.55 Dundalk
Devilment made quite an encouraging debut at Roscommon in May (7.5f, good) in May when from a wide draw he raced wide early before going with plenty of enthusiasm on the front-end, and then having been headed over a furlong out, he kept on well before losing second place deep inside the final furlong and dropping to fourth. There are mixed messages from the form but the second won a Fairyhouse maiden on his next start, and the third has gone on to be rated 89 following a couple of nursery successes.
Devilment didn't really go on after, but was turned out quickly just a week later when being beaten 10 lengths into third place over the same C&D; then following a three-month break he wasn't disgraced in a Leopardstown maiden having raced wide, before disappointing in first-time blinkers at Down Royal having raced keenly.
The selection doesn't face an easy task on adjusted ratings on his return from another break, but that debut promise hasn't been forgotten yet, and given how he went through the race then it will be interesting to see how he takes to Polytrack.

Genealogy, 1pt EW @ 40-1, 12.05 Leopardstown
Juvenile hurdler time again and I'm going to take a chance on Genealogy, who made an encouraging start for Aidan O'Brien, finishing runner-up to a long odds-on stablemate on his 2YO debut at the Curragh, before creating a good impression when running on strongly to land a Punchestown (one mile, good) maiden. He could then only finish 5th of 6 on his final juvenile start when upped in class to Group 3 company at Newmarket, but in a contest won by his then stablemate and subsequently top class Delacroix.
Genealogy seemingly hasn't gone on in two starts this year, having never been involved and finishing well down the field when sent off at 100-30 under Ryan Moore for the London Gold Cup, but perhaps all wasn't well that day as he wasn't seen again until five months later when returning to action in a 12f Leopardstown handicap on heavy ground where, although he could only manage a midfield finish, he didn't shape too badly considering he'd taken a keen hold and then stayed towards the far side in the home straight on a day when coming stands' side appeared an advantage.
It's hardly encouraging that he's been let go relatively cheaply (18,000 gns) since, and perhaps he'll need this initial hurdling experience with his new trainer Denis Hogan taking the ride, but he clearly had a decent level of Flat ability and currently has an official rating of 94, has been gelded ahead of his stable / hurdles debut, won't mind drying ground, and interesting that he held an entry at the five-day stage for the recent Triumph Hurdle Trial at Cheltenham.

Cheers saddo. It looks like the thread will at least end in profit, which had been looking highly unlikely approaching October.
I don't know how you find the time, George.
I've backed Cali Case in the 8.00. I thought it might have got second to No Nee Never on the 8th.
The horse that was second/, Zoulu Warrior, won it's next race, beating No Nee Never a couple of necks
on 5lb better terms, and is favourite tonight.
Trainer on the cold list and I know nowt about the claimer

As for Genealogy, sent off at a Betfair SP of 180 and positioned in rear, he did make headway to finish 8th of the 19 runners, beaten 13L, to suggest he does retain some ability.

Rating, 1pt EW @ 50-1, 8.00 Wolverhampton
Some firms are offering four places on the 8.00 so I'm going to take a chance at big odds on Rating.
Rating needed 22 attempts and the intervention of the stewards to lose her maiden tag over C/D when being awarded the race in the stewards room on her penultimate start, however, that was only the third time she had raced beyond a mile, and on her first attempt at 10f which came at Chepstow in the summer, she only went down narrowly having been a bit short of room inside the final furlong.
Rating disappointed back here last time so needs to put that behind her, and there's no denying this is a deeper contest upped back in class, however, she hasn't had many chances at around this sort of trip, and was initially rated 77 as a juvenile when trained by Brian Meehan, for whom she did make the frame of marks in the low-70s on a couple of occasions, so hopefully she may still have some upside for her current yard off a mark of 64, now it seems that trips in excess of a mile may suit her best.
Peregrine Falcon, 1pt EW @ 14-1, 8.30 Wolverhampton
Peregrine Falcon could only finish 6th of 9 over C&D last time, but she wasn't beaten far and she might have been feeling the effects of having her third run inside 13 days. Her two C&D runs prior to that looked decent efforts, finishing third after trying to lead all the way in a novice against a couple of penalised Newmarket-trained males who have since been allotted initial ratings of 87 and 80; and then back in handicap company when finishing a close third behind rivals who have run well in defeat since.
Hopefully a three-week break has freshened her up and she makes each-way appeal at a double-figure price based on those previous efforts.

End of Thread Summary
A disappointing year, certainly compared to last year's profit of over 200 points, and if anything, for much of 2025 I looked more likely to finish with -200 pts, the thread's nadir came in late-September when it got as bad as -135 pts.
However, thankfully, things eventually did take a turn for the better, notably on September 30th when three winners (Annexation 20-1, Endofastorm 40-1 & La Tulipe Noir 16-1) were selected from four selections on the same post, and a better run of results saw me turn it around and just about get to 50 pts profit before ending up with 41 points profit.
At Betfair SP, which had likewise been dismal, this recovered to end with a profit of 22pts (after 2% commission).

I wouldn't be too disappointed with that profit George although there's a lot more effort involved with your write-ups and justifying your reasoning.
I'm not sure where I was on that glorious 30 SEP 25 date but what a great day you and your thread had
Good Luck for 2026 ....

Huge kudos just for the perseverance (in the face of adversity).
Tip top thread GB
Bit of a rollacoaster

Thanks for another fantastic thread . As others have said I don’t know where you get the time to watch all the replays, make a selection and write it up. If I’ve calculated correctly, if you’d backed win only , you would have won 56 points -but had some very long losing streaks. Looking back over the last five years, I would have won more (ok I’ll come clean - lost less) if I’d backed win only but it is hard to live with a 25/1 shot being placed and getting nothing or a 6/1 shot coming second to a 1/5 shot and again getting nothing.
Look forward to the 2026 thread

Thanks for the kind words.
Happy New Year and good luck for 2026.
Happy New Year and good luck for 2026.
Must have felt like a war of attrition at times and massive credit for keeping it going, well done again on another profitable thread and good luck for 2026.
