Predominantly focused on the Flat, though there may be the odd jumps pick thrown in.
Prediction:
The thread will be a slow burner, with plenty of selections from left field or on the speculative side, with a low strike rate in terms of winners (2024 win strike rate was 9%), and virtually all the selections will be 5-1 or bigger at the early odds.
The odds quoted will be what's on oddschecker with at least one of the main firms at the time of posting, usually late morning / early afternoon.
As I will need all the help I can get, I am going to claim B.O.G where applicable but obviously will keep a close eye on that with some firms now withdrawing the offer.

Mini Magna, 1pt EW @ 40-1, 4.30 Newcastle (4 PLACES)
Mini Magna arrives here off a 74-day break and having run a shocker at Southwell (raced ride, towards rear throughout, beaten 22L) when last seen, so he can only be a speculative selection, however, if he can revive then he's become very well-handicapped being over a stone lower in the weights than for his peak efforts from last autumn which included a close 4th of 13 at York (5f, g-s).
He hasn't looked an entirely lost cause this season considering the ground has probably been quicker than ideal when he has raced and he doesn't always help himself by racing keenly, and he didn't run too badly when selected at Nottingham (5f, g-f) in July, where he finished 4th of five, beaten 3L, rallying after having become outpaced.
His standout effort from six starts on the all-weather came when finishing second off a 20lb higher mark (RPR 86) at Southwell (5f) in March of last year to Ziggy's Missile, who would win again over that C/D later that month off an 11lb higher mark, so the selection is evidently capable of running well on Tapeta.
Smiling, 1pt EW @ 16-1, 6.45 Dundalk (4 PLACES)
Smiling is seemingly Aidan O'Brien's second-string in this fillies' Listed contest, with Wayne Lordan on Ballydoyle's other runner Ballet Slippers, but there's only a pound between them on official ratings and neither is especially fancied in the betting currently.
Smiling comes here on the back of a career-best effort in a Naas fillies' Listed race, where she finished a close second having been drawn widest of the seventeen runners, on what was her second attempt over a mile, and although that might not have been the strongest race of its type with a 91-rated, 33-1 shot winning, the other principals came from low draws and there was a gap to the fourth-placed filly.
The selection still looked quite raw / green at Naas even though it was her 7th start, and while she left the impression last time that she will stay further than a mile, this scopey sort still looks open to improvement. The draw again hasn't been kind but hopefully Declan McDonagh will just go forward and ride her prominently.

Harswell Angel, 1pt EW @ 22-1, 2.00 Doncaster
A chance is taken on Harswell Angel at the prices even though he does have a couple of big questions to answer, obviously whether he'll handle the heavy ground having last time out won a Redcar (6f) novice on good ground on his turf debut, and whether he'll consent to run in a straight line having not done so then having carried the 2-7 shot he got the better off across the track. The selection looked to be travelling better than the favourite on that occasion from over 2f out and won despite hanging badly left with his jockey unable to ride a finish as he struggled to keep his mount from hanging into the favourite.
The colt he got the better off then, who had previously run well behind useful sorts in a couple of Haydock novice races, has been allotted an initial mark of 77, so Harswell Angel's opening mark of 78 looks fair, and interesting to see how he gets on here, for a yard with a 33% strike rate (3-9) in the past fortnight.

Parlando ended up well beaten on his belated reappearance at Nottingham recently but the run was probably needed and he wasn't knocked about once held. He's of interest back on the all-weather, and although he's yet to win in this sphere after seven starts, he's run some good races having recorded RPRs of 87, 92, 90, 94, 93 and 88 (twice).
His official rating is currently 80, a pound below his last winning turf mark, and while there's a concern that he may need another run or two to hit top form, and that Newcastle would be preferable having recorded his peak efforts there, a chance is taken at double-figure price, though it has to be hoped that he gets the breaks from the inside draw.

Just Jump, 1pt EW @ 11-1, 2.40 Dundalk
The market is screaming that Just Jump is very much the third string of the Hogan-McAuley trio in this 5f handicap, with their other two runners being ridden by Colin Keane and Chris Hayes, which may well prove to be significant, but I'm going to be sucked in at the prices as his latest effort here in a claimer last week over the 6f trip looked a decent one, and although he does have to a bit to find with his stablemate Dontspoilasale, whom he reopposes on 4lb better terms for the 3L that he finished behind that rival when they finished second of 4th of the 13 runners, the selection's effort can probably be marked up based on how the race panned out.
The cheekpieces that Just Jump wore then for the first time are retained and he looks worth another try at 5f based on that latest evidence.

Marbush has been a selection the last twice and it's not easy to pick him again after his latest effort here over a mile when he was readily left behind having been well positioned. He seemed to run well over that trip here three starts back in a 0-91 contest when aggressively ridden, and then next time over the 7f trip here he missed a beat at the start, then raced keenly before a move around the outer came to nothing.
He's now off a 17lb lower mark than he started the year on (when trained by Archie Watson), and I'm going to give him another chance in the hope that from a wide draw he gets the sort of aggressive ride in this 0-72 over this shorter trip as he did when leading better class opponents for much of the way in that aforementioned one mile 0-91 contest.

Juvenile hurdler time and I'm going to take a chance on Galactique, who faces a much stiffer task here competing over hurdles away from Fontwell (2m1.5f) for the first time.
Following a well-beaten run at Goodwood (14f, g-f) on his racecourse dubut in the summer, he finished second to one of today's rivals Lord on his hurdling debut (on g-s) in August, and he probably didn't have to improve to win on good ground at odds-on with that initial hurdling experience behind him.
What makes him of interest here is his win (on g-s) under a penalty last time when he defeated a potentially useful recruit off the Flat, namely Winston Junior, whose standout effort had come in a Racing League handicap at Chepstow (12f, g-s) off a mark of 86 when finishing second to Beylerbeyi, who proved a revelation when stepped up in trip, culminating in Cesarewitch glory.
It has to be said that Galactique had the benefit of hurdling experience over that rival and his 7lb penalty was mostly offset by a Freddie Mitchell's 5lb claim, but Winston Junior was well-backed on his stable debut for Faye Bramley and appeared to know his job.

Moab doesn't look the biggest so perhaps there's a reason why his jumps-orientated yard having campaigned him on the flat this year, however, he did make the frame on his hurdles handicap debut at Wincanton (1m7f, g-s) in December when last seen under NH rules so has displayed some aptitude for this code.
He appreciated the step up to 14f when losing his maiden tag in a handicap at Southwell last month, and I'm not convinced the step up to two miles was the reason for his disappointing run back there on his latest start when finishing last of six having been sent off the 7-4 favourite.
Hopefully that latest effort was just a blip, and whilst the all-weather may prove to be more his bag, a chance is taken at the odds as he did look in good nick when winning the time before with something in hand, and today's slightly longer trip over hurdles may suit him better in this sphere.

I thought Moab had it in the bag between the last two but it wasn't to be, but he kept trying to the line once headed by the winner after the last, and pulled 20 lengths clear of the third.

I'm going to have a crazy pick on Raging Al, who was a selection on the thread last time on the flat when I wrote:
Raging Al didn't last long with the Ralph Beckett yard, but he didn't run too badly on his second handicap start for his new connections at Newbury (12f, g-f) last time, and although that was just a five-runner affair, the second, Naasma (whom he meets here on 3lb better terms for a half-length deficit), has won since. It's hard to be sure whether racing on quicker ground was the reason for that better effort (in which case he could do with the ground drying out) or if it was due to his yard being a bit better form as they had sent out a recent winner at the time.
His subsequent 46-day absence is a concern but a chance is taken at the prices that he goes the right way from that improved showing, as this will be just his 6th career start.

He switches code today and this doesn't look easy with high profile and in-form jump yards represented here by potentially useful sorts, and the selection may be one for handicap hurdles in due course, but I'm going to take a chance at big odds because he should be fine for stamina in this discipline (he's out of a useful two-mile handicap winner who was also a Listed winner over 12.5f), the application of a hood may help as he has been keen on occasions, and a good 3lb conditional takes his first ride for a yard that has been amongst the winners of late.

Her two previous all-weather starts had yielded a win at Dundalk (7f) as a 2YO when trained by Ger Lyons, and a good second of ten at Southwell (one mile) in September from the widest draw off a 3lb higher mark than today's, when finding only a William Haggas-trained filly too good who was winning for the third time this year.

I said Raging Al was a crazy pick and unfortunately they proved to be prophetic words because having decided he wasn't happy being restrained out the back, he soon made rapid headway to go a few lengths clear before promptly slamming the breaks on approaching to the second flight and sending his jockey flying.

Soul Seeker, 1pt EW @ 28-1, 7.15 Newcastle (4 PLACES)
Soul Seeker, who's approaching his ninth birthday, has plummeted down the ratings this year since joining Philip Kirby from David O'Meara, however, there have been hints of late that he may not be an entirely lost cause - over the 5f trip here two starts back when showing up well for a fair way, and last time at Wolverhampton (5f) from a wide draw when never involved but did make a little late-headway.
Even if he is able to find some form again now that his mark is in danger of bottoming out, an obvious concern this evening is the 6f trip with all nine of his career successes having come over 5f, mainly on stiff tracks, but a chance is taken each-way at the odds, as if he is to revive then it may be at this venue, albeit that may be when he's back at 5f.

The negatives aren't hard to find regarding the chance of Jazz Dreamers, who's currently only rated 41, has uninspiring form figures, has a wide draw to overcome and his stamina to prove for 10.5f, but he makes a little each-way appeal returning from a 71-day break, having run well on his reappearance at Roscommon (7.5f, good) in May, when finishing 3rd of 15 from a wide draw, in what was the quicker of the two divisions, and perhaps his effort could be marked up having been the only one to have matched strides with the winner (who was backed at prices with Wayne Lordan booked), before losing second place close home, though admittedly it was an advantage to be ridden prominently on that card. He was rated 54 then and the wheels seem to have come off since, though wasn't entirely disgraced when last seen at Laytown in September.

He probably shaped better than his finishing position suggested on his stable debut at Wolverhampton (8.5f) in April, having done plenty from a wide draw before being headed over a furlong out, losing second place inside the final furlong and then weakening out of it. He has found life tough in three starts since on turf but in higher grades and on a couple of occasions over a trip that might stretch his stamina.
The selection doesn't always help himself by racing too keenly but if he can run a more efficient race then this contest looks a more realistic task back on the AW off his reduced mark.

There's a bit to be taken on trust here with Volendam, who's returning from two months off having left Juile Camacho following a disappointing run at Newcastle (7f) in September, when backed into 9-2 from an opening show of 6-1. It perhaps wasn't a surprise to see the market support returned to Newcastle, following three runs on turf, having twice run respectably at the Gosforth Park venue over 5/6f earlier in the year when twice finishing runner-up in maidens to male opposition.
The hood she's worn since her second start is left off today on her debut for Tony Carroll, so could do with settling better than has sometimes been the case kept to 7f, but she looks on a fair mark based on those earlier all-weather efforts and interesting to see which she goes for her new yard.

I'm selecting Parlando again who was a pick on his latest start at Wolverhampton when I wrote:
Parlando ended up well beaten on his belated reappearance at Nottingham recently but the run was probably needed and he wasn't knocked about once held. He's of interest back on the all-weather, and although he's yet to win in this sphere after seven starts, he's run some good races having recorded RPRs of 87, 92, 90, 94, 93 and 88 (twice).
His official rating is currently 80, a pound below his last winning turf mark, and while there's a concern that he may need another run or two to hit top form, and that Newcastle would be preferable having recorded his peak efforts there, a chance is taken at double-figure price, though it has to be hoped that he gets the breaks from the inside draw.
He was never involved at Wolverhampton though probably went into a few trackers having made some late-headway under tender handling, and I've just seen that the jockey was actually given a ten-day ban for failing to obtain the best possible position, even though imo it appeared he didn't have anywhere to go up the home straight.
Whether this will be his day, particularly if ridden the same way again and on the back of what happened last time regarding the running and riding enquiry, and perhaps Newcastle is more suitable for him, but he's likely to be winning at some point on the all-weather, so a chance is taken at a double-figure price.

She's perhaps not the most solid proposition on the back off that now upped again in grade, however, she's of interest back on Tapeta, having run well on her sole all-weather start to date at Wolverhampton (7f) in August, where she stuck to her task well having led over a furlong out before going down by under a length, with a subsequent all-weather nursery winner over a length further back in third place.
There will be less competitive races than this one for her to run in on the all-weather, but given both her siblings showed their best form on an artificial surface, albeit one of them remained a maiden, interesting to see if the return to this sphere can prompt a better effort.

She showed a game attitude when overcoming interference to win at Yarmouth (5f, good) in July, and she's since returned from a break with a couple of respectable efforts - finishing second of 11 at Bath (5f, g-f), and last time at Yarmouth (5f, g-s) not beaten far into fifth having not had the clearest of runs.

Blazing Son's record of just one place from seven starts in class 4 company is a glaring negative to his chance here, but he makes a little each-way appeal at the prices having perhaps shaped better than the bare result suggested when finishing third and beaten 7L over this evening's trip of 7f here two starts back, when he made the running under today's jockey Oliver Carmichael (7) into a slight headwind, and he had one of tonight's rivals Al Muqdad (who admittedly didn't get a clear run) in behind.
He had won over the 7f trip here earlier in September off a 2lb lower mark (when a 3lb claimer rode), and it's easy enough to forgive his latest start at Doncaster where he was poorly drawn on heavy ground. Hopefully he can give another good account back at the Gosforth Park venue, where he has yet to finish out of the frame in eight visits (three wins and five places).

Angel Of England hasn't offered much in a couple of starts back here in class 5 company following a seven-month break but the runs might have been needed and he's of interest dropped into class 6 company off his reduced mark having posted some decent efforts to make the frame off marks in the low-70s here and at Wolverhampton during the last all-weather campaign, one of which came when wearing blinkers, which are reapplied here.

Hover On The Wind looked in really good form in May following a couple of pipe-openers in April having joined Paul Midgley, defeating 12 rivals at Beverley (5f, g-f), and then what looked a big mark-up effort in defeat at Pontefract, when doing well to finish second having endured a tough trip in a strongly-run race.
His form went the wrong way after but it means he returns from a 72-day break off a 7lb lower mark, so if the pause has restored him back to form then he's looking well handicapped off a mark 4lb lower than for his Beverley win. He does have to prove that he can be as effective on the all-weather having made the frame just once from five starts on synthetics, but his form in the spring would suggest the stiff 5f here could suit.

Penfolds Grange was a selection on the thread in April on the back of a creditable run in a Wolverhampton (8.5f) novice when under a penalty he finished third behind two who are currently rated 85 and 79. He was outclassed in class 2 company the day I selected him at Sandown, before making the frame at 33-1 when drawn widest of 14 at Chester (7.5f, good). He only ran twice more for Harry Eustace, disappointing at Redcar on easier ground, before not being disgraced finishing in midfield in a Racing League handicap back at Wolverhampton (8.5f) having not been helped by clipping heels soon after the start.

Faster Bee does have to prove his stamina for 10f, particularly as he can be keen, but shaped as though he would stay further when keeping on for 4th over the mile trip here on his penultimate start.

Kathleen Mary isn't obviously bred for 12f being by Threat and out of a winning sprinter but she stays at least 10f having placed over that trip twice in May / June on the AW at Lingfield and then notably at Chelmsford, where it looked a good effort to finish runner-up to a well-bred filly trained by Roger Varian, who was then handed an initial mark of 80 but hasn't been seen since, and over five lengths back in third was a 76-rated filly was subsequently finished in the first four on three occasions off marks in the low-70s.
Kathleen Mary seemingly hasn't gone on in two starts since but soft ground might not have been ideal at Windsor in July, and was returning from over four months off and had the widest draw when finishing 6th of 12 at Chelmsford (10f) thirteen days ago.
Hopefully that recent pipe-opener has sharpened her up as she looks fairly handicapped off a mark of 70, and looks worth a try over 12f.

Devilment made quite an encouraging debut at Roscommon in May (7.5f, good) in May when from a wide draw he raced wide early before going with plenty of enthusiasm on the front-end, and then having been headed over a furlong out, he kept on well before losing second place deep inside the final furlong and dropping to fourth. There are mixed messages from the form but the second won a Fairyhouse maiden on his next start, and the third has gone on to be rated 89 following a couple of nursery successes.
Devilment didn't really go on after, but was turned out quickly just a week later when being beaten 10 lengths into third place over the same C&D; then following a three-month break he wasn't disgraced in a Leopardstown maiden having raced wide, before disappointing in first-time blinkers at Down Royal having raced keenly.
The selection doesn't face an easy task on adjusted ratings on his return from another break, but that debut promise hasn't been forgotten yet, and given how he went through the race then it will be interesting to see how he takes to Polytrack.

Juvenile hurdler time again and I'm going to take a chance on Genealogy, who made an encouraging start for Aidan O'Brien, finishing runner-up to a long odds-on stablemate on his 2YO debut at the Curragh, before creating a good impression when running on strongly to land a Punchestown (one mile, good) maiden. He could then only finish 5th of 6 on his final juvenile start when upped in class to Group 3 company at Newmarket, but in a contest won by his then stablemate and subsequently top class Delacroix.
Genealogy seemingly hasn't gone on in two starts this year, having never been involved and finishing well down the field when sent off at 100-30 under Ryan Moore for the London Gold Cup, but perhaps all wasn't well that day as he wasn't seen again until five months later when returning to action in a 12f Leopardstown handicap on heavy ground where, although he could only manage a midfield finish, he didn't shape too badly considering he'd taken a keen hold and then stayed towards the far side in the home straight on a day when coming stands' side appeared an advantage.
It's hardly encouraging that he's been let go relatively cheaply (18,000 gns) since, and perhaps he'll need this initial hurdling experience with his new trainer Denis Hogan taking the ride, but he clearly had a decent level of Flat ability and currently has an official rating of 94, has been gelded ahead of his stable / hurdles debut, won't mind drying ground, and interesting that he held an entry at the five-day stage for the recent Triumph Hurdle Trial at Cheltenham.

Some firms are offering four places on the 8.00 so I'm going to take a chance at big odds on Rating.
Rating needed 22 attempts and the intervention of the stewards to lose her maiden tag over C/D when being awarded the race in the stewards room on her penultimate start, however, that was only the third time she had raced beyond a mile, and on her first attempt at 10f which came at Chepstow in the summer, she only went down narrowly having been a bit short of room inside the final furlong.
Rating disappointed back here last time so needs to put that behind her, and there's no denying this is a deeper contest upped back in class, however, she hasn't had many chances at around this sort of trip, and was initially rated 77 as a juvenile when trained by Brian Meehan, for whom she did make the frame of marks in the low-70s on a couple of occasions, so hopefully she may still have some upside for her current yard off a mark of 64, now it seems that trips in excess of a mile may suit her best.
Peregrine Falcon, 1pt EW @ 14-1, 8.30 Wolverhampton
Peregrine Falcon could only finish 6th of 9 over C&D last time, but she wasn't beaten far and she might have been feeling the effects of having her third run inside 13 days. Her two C&D runs prior to that looked decent efforts, finishing third after trying to lead all the way in a novice against a couple of penalised Newmarket-trained males who have since been allotted initial ratings of 87 and 80; and then back in handicap company when finishing a close third behind rivals who have run well in defeat since.
Hopefully a three-week break has freshened her up and she makes each-way appeal at a double-figure price based on those previous efforts.

Rating needed 22 attempts and the intervention of the stewards to lose her maiden tag over C/D when being awarded the race in the stewards room on her penultimate start, however, that was only the third time she had raced beyond a mile, and on her first attempt at 10f which came at Chepstow in the summer, she only went down narrowly having been a bit short of room inside the final furlong.
Rating disappointed back here last time so needs to put that behind her, and there's no denying this is a deeper contest upped back in class, however, she hasn't had many chances at around this sort of trip, and was initially rated 77 as a juvenile when trained by Brian Meehan, for whom she did make the frame of marks in the low-70s on a couple of occasions, so hopefully she may still have some upside for her current yard off a mark of 64, now it seems that trips in excess of a mile may suit her best.
Peregrine Falcon, 1pt EW @ 14-1, 8.30 Wolverhampton
Peregrine Falcon could only finish 6th of 9 over C&D last time, but she wasn't beaten far and she might have been feeling the effects of having her third run inside 13 days. Her two C&D runs prior to that looked decent efforts, finishing third after trying to lead all the way in a novice against a couple of penalised Newmarket-trained males who have since been allotted initial ratings of 87 and 80; and then back in handicap company when finishing a close third behind rivals who have run well in defeat since.
Hopefully a three-week break has freshened her up and she makes each-way appeal at a double-figure price based on those previous efforts.

Thanks for another fantastic thread . As others have said I don’t know where you get the time to watch all the replays, make a selection and write it up. If I’ve calculated correctly, if you’d backed win only , you would have won 56 points -but had some very long losing streaks. Looking back over the last five years, I would have won more (ok I’ll come clean - lost less) if I’d backed win only but it is hard to live with a 25/1 shot being placed and getting nothing or a 6/1 shot coming second to a 1/5 shot and again getting nothing.
