State Man shouldn't really have been good enough to win one Champion Hurdle. He's now been exposed running against better opposition. The pool has had little depth to it for quite a while. Was he ever that good? Yes, he ran below, but how much below? Townend clearly very protective of him. If he wasn't travelling then why not pull him up? At his best I don't think he would have got close to bridging that gap. If the top three turn up in March I don't see him figuring, and Townend will be on Lossiemouth.
