Contact IBAS. I think it's opportunistic, sharp practice and morally wrong to allow a deposit before a request for ID verification. The request for ID verification should/ought to have done prior to a deposit, and certainly prior to an account opening is permitted/accepted.

If all fail, contact your brief or Trading Standard or Citizen Advice Bureau (only as a last resort) given how busy they can be. The scumbag bookies must not be allowed to profit thro' sharp practice, period.

Maybe an email to the bookies' racing paper for some "common sense" comments.

'Davros', my apology for duplicating my earlier advice. Inform the scumbag bookie (and possibly its CEO) IBAS is awaiting their response otherwise IBAS will step in.

They did quote their terms and conditions which say they can ask you for notarised documents and if you don't provide them they can keep any deposited money.

except that's not what they say.
By:

That cannot be legally justified in court or with IBAS. The term and condition is so loaded against the customer/punter the way it's framed or structured it cannot be supported in court or ombudsman. The bookie should/ought to have requested a due diligence on the customer/punter prior to account acceptance.

This is sharp practice at its worst.

could turn round to everyone that opens an account with them and say we "reasonably believe" that your document is not legitimate or valid.

please go and pay for a notarised copy and we'll think about giving you your money back.

oh, you don't want to pay for a notarised copy ??  no problem, we'll keep your money.

what would happen if they paid you out £20 too much ??

we'd like our £20 back please.

certainly, go and pay £70 to get something notarised, send it to me and you might get your £20 back.

I was in a fairly similar situation with Betway many moons ago after winning an antepost bet, and before AC. I told their head of department I'd been registered to the same address on the Electoral Register for the last 10 years. Otherwise, a legal letter to her superior ie CEO would follow. She coughed up £190 reluctantly may I hastened to add.

Thanks everyone.  Hulk:  this is the screenshot regarding notarised documents that they posted in the live chat.  Perhaps I was misguided when I said keep rather than "terminate" and "withhold".

They have 30 minutes left to email me about my complaint, then I can escalate the complaint.  Only then can I go to ecogra (they aren't signed up to IBAS) and the Gambling Commission.  Unfortunately the escalation can take 8 weeks!

In the meantime I'll try a couple of the other tactics.

If anybody ever sees XXX sport sponsoring horse races in the Midlands please post here.

For info Davros:

Our services in the UK are operated by 888 UK Limited, a company incorporated in Gibraltar. 888 UK Limited is licensed and regulated in Great Britain by the Gambling Commission under the account number 39028.

For all the good it will do you. So gatecrashing a box full of their casino/slots addicts (sorry, I mean VIP's) at a local race meeting will probably be more effective, if you feel that strongly about it (which I hope you do).

Try asking them to pay you in legal tender.  If they refuse put them in the small claims court where the judge has little leeway but to order them to pay you.  Just depends how much they have of your money as to if it's worth it.

When: 15 Feb 25 12:50
Davros, it sounds like you will be jumping through hoops and going to small claims court is not as straight forward as some would have you think, still more hoops. A while back I posted that I had helped someone get paid by Hills via Resolver, it was simple and free and they paid up within 4 days. Only take a few minutes of your time.

888 Sport I assume. Doesn`t really matter. These "new" companies are all the same. Stick with reputable firms like Ladbrokes, Hills, Corals, PP if you can bet with them.

'Davros', try emailing their CEO, and the Gambling Commission about their trickery. Also, buy a few 888 (renamed EVOKE) shares to qualify you for an invitation at their AGM. If in London, vent your frustration at the AGM. In the meantime go to their review forums eg Trustpilot, etc. Keep bombarding them with email daily similarly, their CEO. Good Luck!

Davros, when you use a card for payment of anything it is covered by the bank. A common misconception is that it just applies to credit cards but it doesn't,  it's also applicable to debit cards.

If you contact your bank and tell them you used your card to make a payment but have changed your mind and the company won't refund your money and ask them to activate a charge back on your card.
They will send you a form to fill out via email with a couple of questions and they will refund you immediately and then take the money back from the company that owes you the money.

This is fact, I have used this method several times with various companies over the years with 100% success rate. As long as you state on the form that you have paid the money out and the company refuse to refund you they will refund you immediately and they then deal with the problem company.

A pleasing result every time and it means no shyster gets one over on you ExcitedGrin

There's a 120 day time limit on debit card chargebacks.  If it isn't 120 days yet that's probably your best bet.  I queried a charge with Bananabet over 20 years ago now and got my money back.  Also queried a charge when I was sent the wrong footwear and got my money back then too.

Bookmakers can put in whatever T+Cs they like but if they are deemed unfair they are not enforceable.

You could ofc just send them the ID, though can understand why you don't want to.

'oneten', precisely. It applies to a debit card transaction too. The bank will ask for a reverse charge (I think it's called a chargeback) from the retailer if the item is not sent, not as described or you simply have changed your mind.

fwiw I've prolly used more than 100 different bookies and never not got paid.  There's been some tricky ones, (Betworld, Betway and Guts spring to mind as the worst) but eventually they all paid up.  One Aussie firm I had to go the PO and get an official document signed that it was in fact me.  Sportsbet or something like that iirc.  Occupational Hazard.  The Bananabet chargeback was lucky because I queried the amount of the charge, (the bet had lost) and I got the whole deposit back.  A week or two later they went bust!

One shouldn`t be able to deposit or place a bet with any firm until any required and requested identification is received by the bookie in question. I opened an account and deposited with the same firm as Davros over a year ago and lost approximately 500 total (roughly 6-8 Deposits) with no questions asked. I can still deposit and bet with them if I want without supplying any relevant documentation. However I can assure you that if the scenario arose and I deposited and won with them, they would demand the said identity information the minute I tried to make an initial withdrawal. It`s the sheer hypocrisy of the *****.

Put pressure on them through social media as its public, and will hurt the shareholders and their overall perception to the public.

I have posted many times trying to alert punters of this tactic.
I tried to withdraw £600 following a win.
Would not allow until I submitted the usual.
It took a month and the hoopla game before I received payment.Closed my account immediately.

I've tried to name all the online bookies I've had an account with deposited money in and can name 101.  Got all letters of the alphabet covered except A K O and X.  Tried to open an account with AKBets but was refused.  At least a couple I can't recall the names of: Aussie Company who around 2004 thought they'd try and crack the UK, began with an S I think, and an odds clone of Sporting Odds and Sportingbet that were around about 2006 and began with a P iirc.  Paid in full by all of them, where I've requested a payout.

Why would Ak not open you an account Clydebank29?
By:

The reason they gave was that I had an account with another company that were related to or under the same ownership as AKbets.  I could close that account they said, but that's not a sound footing on which to open an account.  I don't know who that might be?

Christ I forgot Marathonbet.  They've pulled out of the UK now but imo they were definitely among the top 5 bookies.  Very competitive odds.  Great selection of sports and bets.  Never any hassle with withdrawals and decent limits.

Out of all 100+ online bookies, Betway were the worst to deal with.  I'm not going into details, but it makes me seriously question the allegations against Lucas Paqueta, whom  I'm not surprised at all is still playing.  I will often see Betway the standout price on things, and it is no surprise why.

Premierbet went bust a fair few years back, they did the football at first but got into horse racing and then taken over by another company.
Just before they went bust, I had a fair few thousand in winnings which I requested back and they stil held onto my money. Loads of emails later, nothing.
So I found out the emai address of the owner, found out where he lived, sent him an email and said I would march him to the bank if he did not give my my money back. The next day I had an email saying that my money was on the way and I am glad to say it arrived. Phew. The next week they went bust!!!

From memory someone on here called Mister Ed lost £10k that was sat in his account and he could not get it back!

I was lucky.

I am sure you will get you cash back, keep on pestering them all ways possible.

I think PricedUp is too Clyde. They are quite dodgy and on my blacklist as in my experience bets in play often go to a trader for review and take up to a minute, which in most sports can see the price you are asking becoming very weak indeed

AK McB and SS sites are all operated by Star Racing.  Priced Up is run by Offcourse Bookmakers Limited.  So I don't think they are, although clearly they use the same odds feed and formatted website.  I don't have an account with them.

Key points about an active proposal to strike off:
This can be triggered by a company not filing required documents, not responding to official correspondence, or showing signs of inactivity.
Impact on company:
While the company is still technically active during this period, it is under threat of being struck off and ceasing to exist.
