I couldn’t believe it when my £1,000 stake was refused in a shop over 3 months before Cheltenham for a 12/1 double with 2 horses in single figures.

I’d expect a Yorkshire outfit with a history of laying bets must be happy fleecing thick football punters who wouldn’t know value a mile off.

So 1st time poster,  i am a bedwetter with a £1k double (i got on elsewhere) one of which is Jonbon 7/2.
Report CagliariG December 7, 2024 6:04 PM GMT
Funny that eric, being as you claimed the double was in three months time!!!  Think 1st TP has you well sussed tbh!!
Report CagliariG December 7, 2024 6:06 PM GMT
Before you wet the bed, what race was Jonbon in and the second leg race?
Report eric_morris December 7, 2024 6:17 PM GMT
Ok so it December and its 3 months to the Festival. Is there a parallel universe others are in i dont understand?
Report eric_morris December 7, 2024 6:18 PM GMT
Jonbon for the Champion Chase what else would you back him for? It has been a 2 horse race for a very long time.
Report CagliariG December 7, 2024 6:19 PM GMT
You don't understand the essence of betting and porkie pies eric. What price the second leg?
Report CagliariG December 7, 2024 6:33 PM GMT
Seems to be taking you a long time to work it out eric so just so we know, who is the second horse in the two horse race of the Champion Chase?
Report eric_morris December 7, 2024 6:46 PM GMT
You need to work things out for yourself. Antepost is about experience watching horses and reading trainers. Why not start now guys and keep the art alive?
Report eric_morris December 7, 2024 6:49 PM GMT
I started backing antepost 42 years agoso youmight have a bit of catching up to do Happy
Report CagliariG December 7, 2024 6:52 PM GMT
Why not just post the price of the second leg or name the horse you thinks is the only danger to Jonbon, not giving anything away are you?
Report eric_morris December 7, 2024 6:56 PM GMT
Time to start learning guys. It’s a fantastic art it’s a shame it’s dying out.
Report CagliariG December 7, 2024 6:58 PM GMT
Sounds like it died out like your definition of honesty 47 years ago tbf eric!!
Report CagliariG December 7, 2024 7:02 PM GMT
Btw I suspect your mobile phone is still analogue and you haven't figured out why it does not work!! Why else would you go to a Ladcrooks high street shop because your bet was refused by Billy?

ive had a few great doubles come up, not ante post....my favourite was a 20 quid double...lol Aventino and Kalshan  got £920 back for my 20 quid.

My biggest win on a double, 500 quid double, spring to glory , who i think was John Dunlop and Kudz, Henry Cecil, Kudz was a semi decent stayer.....won £6300....Bookie paid me out in £100 notes....not ante post of course those 2.

i backed the Thinker to win the Grand National, 3OO at 25s,  he then goes and wins the snowbound Gold Cup that year and does not run in the national...lol
Backed Pennekamp to win the Guineas ante post, but hardly beat the price...500 at 5s...did enjoy that race though..Pennekamp was a fantastic horse....injured in the derby when favourite.

Oh and i had 2 grand on Hernando to win the arc antepost at 13/2.....Hernando should have won that arc imo...Carnegie won it.
Report eric_morris December 8, 2024 3:40 AM GMT
Nice bets aberdonia and some great names from the past. Kudz was a good horse for the legend HRAC.

The Thinker from the days when numerous stables could have the fav for a Gold Cup it made it a bit more interesting even small stables eg Jodami could have a top horse with a leading chance.

Hernando yes he was class.

Too many bets to mention antepost it all  started proper in 1989 with Desert Orchid 7/1 for the Gold Cup and Musical Bliss 12/1 the 1000 Guineas also in Pennekamp colours pf Sheikh Mo.
Report eric_morris December 8, 2024 3:42 AM GMT
I was betting antepost from 1983 but it took around 6 years to get a bit better at it.
Report eric_morris December 8, 2024 3:53 AM GMT
Oh on having the Thinker for the National then him going Gold Cup it is one of the many factors you have to nail to get it right antepost we have all been there.

An example i can think of was going to the bookies to see this horse of HRAC’s in the last race at Kempton over a mile. He won hands and heels in Abdulla colours and i believe the ground was fairly slow with rain. Of course i was hugely impressed and it was obvious enough he would go for the Derby tripwise. So i rushed home and got on the phone and placed £1,000 on at best priced 33/1 for the Derby. Of course we all know now the form of that race at Kempton where Frankel beat Nathaniel was pretty good.
It took a while for the penny to drop about his his versatility and i was in a bit of denial as he looked a massive chance at 33/1 in the Derby to me. Reluctantly i took £1,000 at 7/1 the Guineas later as he shrunk for that. We all know HRAC didnt do dual distance with his classic colts so i knew my fate soon for the Derby.
Report eric_morris December 8, 2024 4:06 AM GMT
My counting money on the carpet memory was the £500 i had antepost on Carvill’s Hill 4/1 at a Ladbrokes for the Coral Welsh National.

He looked a monster i backed him in the Rehearsal Chase before that and knew i had to follow him. Also had a grand at 10s the Gold Cup and went to watch him he was Evens. We all know the story of that :)
Report geoff m December 8, 2024 8:01 AM GMT
We all know it wasnt Frankel you saw in the last race @ Kempton.

Yes it was Newmarket my mistake.

I tell who i want what bets i have on i am not a tipster. If historical bets are so offensive to you then best dont read aberdonia or my posts above. We didnt know it was going to be discussed in advance aberdonia seems an interesting poster.

Just find it bizarre that you come on to say you are having a grand double but don't say who the horses are.
Why do you want everyone to know you are having a thousand pounds on a bet?

The other horse was lossiemouth at 15/8 making a 12/1 double with 7/2 Jonbon

Those were my first thoughts Brandy, seems strange behaviour telling a World Wide forum about his bets, then goes onto say he cant name the selections. ?? MischiefCrazy

waste of time is that, shops tend to speak to each other, even back in the 80s, now it would be on their computer screen i would have thought.......and nowadays 250 doubles would be noted immediately.

thnk ive been a bookies max 10 times last decade.

i went in to place 100 quid on at evens, in a 2 ball golf bet, this would be about 5 years ago...PTL....before taking the bet.
Report the dealer December 8, 2024 1:33 PM GMT
The tills behind the counter now incorporates a ssbt terminal, so all prices available are on them. All antepost bets would or should be placed through them. This means they can be seen immediately by the traders. It's the same procedure for large bets and bets placed in the shop on the betting terminals. You don't need to phone anything now. You get on or get the stake too high message.
