I think my old Toshiba is coming to an end and was thinking of purchasing what to me looks a bargain. I only use my laptop for Betfair and banking, the odd shop and Google so I don't need anything fancy. Sensible replies welcome please. TIA.

Buy a chromebook....They are blisteringly quick, in built security, updates for many years and boots up in 2 seconds max.

they are perfect for betting, browsing, email, and streaming.

Put you winnings to good use...MischiefGrin

Windows machines are horrific in comparison......just not needed for the majority of folk and clunky...
Report aberdonia November 29, 2024 8:07 PM GMT
The bog standard ipad 10th generation would also be better than a windows machine imo....using the browser for betting sites far smoother than a windows i3 machine.
Report aberdonia November 29, 2024 8:11 PM GMT
you also have access to the google playstore on a chromebook, so can download most of the apps you have on your phone, including banking apps etc.

For what you use a laptop for, a chromebook is a no brainer...it will fly in comparison to i3 windows machine , even a basic one will be quicker.

I only use Chromebook - I cannot afford an Apple. I'll not use Windows post the debacle with one of their reps after accepting a free upgrade to Windows 10. It was carp, and asked to uninstall and revert back to xp/8.

Now, I only use Chromebook, 2 to be precise. One is a Lenovo, the other an Asus. Simple to use, cheap to buy and long lasting.

ive 3, an asus, the lenovo im typing on now, and a google pixelbook go, it will stop getting updates in 2029, but its bloody outstanding across the board.

as has been said, simple to use, put an adblock extension on, and you are good to go....and you wont believe how quick they are. Chromebooks use much less resources than a windows laptop.

I do hate apple devices, but i got the ipad 10th generation a month ago...really like it, very handy to use, and its quick...Will be able to get the 10th gen one for £250 next year i think.

This lenovo , backlit keyboard, touchscreen, got for £169 in one of the sales that are one the go all the time...from memory 349 is price currently.

currys, have an ebay store, there will be great refurbs on there, which will be "brand new"...hardly any use, customer returns etc.

Same here. I usually have 2, 1 as spare in case it kapoots whilst being use; I need instant replacement. Similarly, wifi, and never with the same company.
Report aberdonia November 29, 2024 9:16 PM GMT
re wifi, if you are with BT/EE for broadband, and have been for decades, they are ripping you off...ie, you will be paying way above the market average.

BT here aberdonia. £40 per month unlimited use as with the landine, unlimited minutes.

Mobile is with EE at £6 per month, again with unlimited minutes/texts but don't have a smartphone so no data which would probably cost more like £25.

in Aberdeen, full fibre 900 can be had for under £30 per month...I dispensed with landline years ago....no more nuisance calls from the "bank" telling me i need to move money to a safe account to prevent fraud...lol

Has anyone heard of Community Fibre? If they cover your area give them a try. Also, they are much cheaper, and download/upload speed better too eg 1 Gbps is only £26 per month. I was with VirginMedia (VM) on a 18mth promotion; their renewal was very expensive. WM is one company loyalty does not pay.

If you want a windows laptop it's an exceptionally good price for the spec. Windows starter edition would put me off though, it's like Chrome and you're locked into Windows ecosystem.

Personally I would invest an extra £70 and get this, for the i5 processor, and proper windows (vs windows starter). https://www.currys.co.uk/products/hp-15sfq5510sa-15.6-laptop-intel-core-i5-256-gb-ssd-silver-10254705.html

I almost bought this even though I don't need a laptop, it's such a good price.

sometimes you need your router, as the ones provided by the broadband company tend to be pish.....i bought my own router/mesh system and its made a big difference speed wise...ive got 500 fullfibre as 900 is overkill, but up here the 900 prices are cheaper than the 500, so ill move supplier when contract is up...cheapest is £26 per month for full fibre 900, but lots at under £30 per month for that speed.

And remember, always have an ad blocker on your browser, uBlock Origin is the best one IMO. Use random, long, unique generated passwords for each online account. And Always use 2-factor Authentication (most places have this implemented now) Never click email links, engage with anyone you don't know via a phone call. Never interact with messages from WhatsApp app or SMS messages you don't know, or they are not already on your contact list. Banks will NEVER contact you via phone, only letter.

Always Google the website or have it bookmarked, rather than NEVER click the email link via to that site. This may be basic knowledge to everyone on here, but you would be surprised at the sophisticated AI advancements in scams these days!

Always only accept cash for something you are selling privately.

If what you think sounds like a friend online or phone call, be extra careful, as AI now can clone phone numbers and voices of that person to a remarkable level already. We are coming to the stage now where everyone needs passwords between themselves to identify that t is really them talking and texting!
Report Trident November 30, 2024 9:51 AM GMT
If you think you are interacting with a friend online, but your gut instincts say something doesn't seem right? Ask that person something only you and He/She would know, not Fav football team or date of birth. Confirm their identity, basically.

Correct. You can't install anything on them that's not in the Play store. This is why I would never use them.

Will usually work, but not always, and will likely void any warranty. Or you could try a Windows emulator. Or just don't buy a chromebook in the first place. Happy
