Trust this forum to put up some of the greatest films of all time. Tells you plenty about the place.

The Greatest Showman is a serious omission. The Godfather Part 2 one of the greatest films ever made, better than The Godfather. The Godfather Part 3 should never have been released. Should have been incarcerated for eternity.

You got a response cider if you could only work it out. I will tell you that The Godfather parts 1 and 2 were brilliant along with the Shawshank Redemption so clearly not overrated.

I'm sure you don't like lots of stuff i do sparrow and I'm sure you dislike stuff that lots of people don't. I won't begin to talk about what is regarded as 'great'; music! The Godfather isn't crap just nowhere near as good as most think (IMO!) I could go into why but why bother? I'm interested in the origins of the Mafia (C18th-19th land reforms caused local nobles to form their own 'law' enforcement basically) and the destruction and terror they brought to their part of Italy which set that part back (and still does). Its not why I think its overrated but The Godfather is responsible for much of the over-romanticised view of the Mafia most have.

It was a film spyker and the acting was superb but if people choose to be so naive about the Gangsters and the Mafia then there is little you can do about that.

& gaslighting, Hollywood will flood the internet with positive reviews, made by biased people with skin in the game. These days there's oft a massive disparity between 'professional' critics and real world critics and feedback. And the imdb ratings which are now r i g g e d. The 'Gladiator 2' release will likely be a good example of that.

It tallies with the addiction the big budget movie world now has with pursuing a particular ideology, rewriting history by contaminating our great movies and memories, whilst at the same time monetizing the nostalgia.

And idiots giving 0 starts cos a star in it once said something bad about a politician they rate (either way). If you think 'normal' reviews are a guide to a film these days then think again. This over romanticised view of the past really is very silly and naive - do you think reviews haven't always been manipulated etc? The Wizard of Oz was basically a flop until it was repeated ad infinitum on Us Tv in the 50's as was Its a Wonderful Life and a few others to boot.

Of course it's always been influenced by other variables, especially money. But the internet has changed this forever, much like so much else of our public discourse.

I very rarely look at new releases these days, and I no longer go to the cinema. I'm sure there have been many subsequent examples but I seem to recall The Joker (brilliant film), being received less than favourably by 'professional' critics, but the general public loved it.

"Fargo does" does not deserve to get a mention on this thread, imo.
It's a solid 9/10 job in my book.

"Kinda funny looking."

Mission Impossible series & John Wick as well do, however.

I hate sci-fi, so have never watched star wars and never want to, but everyone is different

Didn't rate Pulp Fiction nor Reservoir Dogs (not really a Tarantino fan, as you could probably guess!).

Tastes can change over time, however. I didn't totally'get' Withnail and I, for example, but I was only around 20 when I first watched it, so might not have got all the references.

As a seven year old sat in the cinema and watching Star Wars for the very first time would have to be the most magical moment ever when it comes to film and tv.

GEORGE.B07 Nov 24 23:55

Stu, out of interest, please name 3 of your favourite films.

Sorry, only just saw this reply:

3 is pretty difficult (so many) and I don't really like to rank films too much as 'the' favourite, but without thinking too deeply I could think of maybe a few (often different reasons).

Like say loved Goodfellas (far more than Godfather), I like a very decent horror/thriller so maybe Silence of the Lambs or Seven (etc), and too add a different type I still love Groundhog Day!

3 would miss off many honourable mentions: The Matrix (first one only though), Shaun of the Dead, The Ring and The Grudge, Zombieland, Love Actually, Dumb and Dumber (yes like silly movies too sometimes!)...etc

Thank you Stu. I was just curious to find out what someone, who doesn't rate The Godfather too much, actually does rate, and tbf some good choices there.

cheers George - wouldn't say I actively dislike The Godfather, should say, rather think it fits the bill for overrated. I've watched it now about 3 times (usually as someone else wants to watch it) and my missus actually loves it (for some reason) despite me!

We do all have different tastes. I think all the movies Stu mentioned in his 18:02 post are really good films that I have watched numerous times. I disliked all the films from his next post though (barring Dumb And Dumber, I love that) which kind of proves the theory.

If you like Dumb And Dumber then you’ll bound to like Kingpin.
