There's a sentence missing off the end of Racing Victoria stewards' statement ruling out Jan Brueghel from the Melbourne Cup: "Its got absolutely nothing to do with the fact that he was favourite to take our dollars back to Ireland."

"The lads were very happy with the horse and he was bouncing in quarantine, but the vets have come up with the decision that he doesn't pass the inspection to run."

'The lads' will get over it.

ps

They are not lads, they are pensioners.

It occurred to me that he didn't race as a 2YO, not making his debut until May, but as he's looked an immature sort, he's probably just needed time rather than there was an issue which prevented him from racing as a juvenile.

Of Aidan O'Brien's 8 St Leger winners, Jan Brueghel isn't unique in not having raced as a 2YO, cuz neither did Scorpion, and he raced on until he was five.

Well, that's one way of stopping European trained Horses winning the race.
Report oneten October 29, 2024 5:54 PM GMT
This has happened to European runners in previous years and AOB stated a week or so ago that he was concerned about it . Sorry but I didn't take a mental note of what I read but he said so.ethibg along the lines of him being a 3yr old hence still growing / less mature etc.
I take it he has failed on the x rays ? Just a thought , surely you could send a set of x rays to the Oz vets so they can give you a heads up or not before you travel all the way over there ?
Obviously the aussie vets should still take their own x rays once you're there, but they could give you an indication of whether you're likely to be spun on the evidence of what you send them.

It would save a lot of expense and hassle for all involved and it would be a lot better for the horse especially as everyone says their number one concern is the horse's welfare

Can you imagine what would happen if they applied this CT scan testing to jumps horses over here, looking for the risk of injury? Also, low grade horses on the flat would rarely come out with a perfect rating for the Oz vets.

These health tests were introduced following a series of deaths of European horses in the Melbourne Cup, including the Derby winner Anthony Van Dyck and The Cliffsofmoher, both trained by one Aidan O'Brien.

Well remembered ramruma, I had forgotten about them.
