Horseracing and Betting Magazines

Internet put them all out of the game.

It did,they were 2 good ones,back in the day it was hard to find good reading material on horse racing,but since the Internet, it's everywhere on line.

I just can`t get used to reading magazines or books online. Can`t concentrate.

I think the Racing Gold was the only weekly racing publication which had a Page 3 girl, lol.

People in racing, including punters, have always wanted things for nothing.

I still have a stack of Odds On magazines, and Owner Breeder, Pacemaker, James Underwood's Breeding Digest, that will probably be thrown away next year as decluttering continues slowly. I gave a couple of Racing Times away last week.

Another thing gone is the papers would publish season previews in book form, certainly the Sun and Star did, and somewhere I have a more general racing book from the Express iirc.

These days it is only the Racing Post publishing hard copy; even Timeform is online only.

How about Racing Ahead mag ?

Racing Ahead was good LOA. There was a good magazine which went to all the Betting Shops about bookmaking but I can`t remember it`s name. Think it went free to all registered betting shops in UK.

Totally, totally agree about reading books and stuff online.

Books, mags and papers were tremendously popular for so long because they, among other things, aided concentration.

Just because the technology came long to put them online did not mean we actually had to.

Probably a rare example of where technology has taken us a step backwards!!

I actually had forgot about the Racing & Football Outlook annuals for Flat and Jumps and I used to buy them every year, lol. Thanks for the reminder SFBTW. I wen`t to buy the weekly paper last week and put it back when I saw the price. At least it is still going but different to the original version. Many leading racing and football writers started out with the R & F Outlook.

Ronnie, there was another trade magazine but I`m hanged if I can remember it`s name? It went FREE to all the Independent betting shops.

Do William Hill still publish their monthly magazine that went to staff and telephone account holders? Can`t mind what that one was called. Might have just been Will Hill Racing magazine. Six issues a year perhaps?

What happened to that comparatively recent magazine - Inside Edge?

15-20 years back - had a lot of good articles, info at times.

Got a bundle of 'em in me shed.

Sports Advisor magazine ran by Ed Chamberlin, didn't last long but was a decent read... some of the columnists were Julian Wilson ( high roller ) and Mark Winstanley ( low roller ) and i'm sure Barstewards Lee Keys was also on the firm.

I used to get mine free from Victor Chandler due to still having an account back then...( oh for them days when we all had usable accounts with every bookie )

Smartsig magazine was excellent. Still available online but not checked that out.

Come Racing is a shocking ommision - unless I missed it earlier in the fred.

A4 glossy magazine. Think John Mc. was a main contributor.

There's a publication called Bloodstock Notebook, which comes out once or cometimes twice a year. Here's an excerpt from issue 7, the winter 2023 one (they've currently reached issue 8):
