Newton Abbot is on a floodplain (of the River Lemon, that stream by the 2 mile start - most of the river is underneath Newton town centre, but it still has to overflow somewhere).
Wincanton is at the top of a hill (I know this, because I cycled up it from Cary station today). In addition, if you try ploughing up there, you just turn up loads of hardcore. So it drains well.

Ah, but the train from Taunton doesn't stop at Bruton! It stops at Cary, then Westbury.
Besides, I love the ride from Cary, along the back lanes through Hadspen. I get to pass the house where I lived through the 90s (or punting's glory years, as I call them).
