What's going on in the West Country, weather-wise? Ireland is cancelling fixtures because they've had no rain! Is there some new weather pattern that skirts round the Emerald Isle bringing the aftermath of American hurricanes?

Even more confusing, Ramruma
Newton Abbot waterlogged, Wincanton today, about 80 miles away, going GOOD

Newton Abbot is on a floodplain (of the River Lemon, that stream by the 2 mile start - most of the river is underneath Newton town centre, but it still has to overflow somewhere).

Wincanton is at the top of a hill (I know this, because I cycled up it from Cary station today). In addition, if you try ploughing up there, you just turn up loads of hardcore. So it drains well.

OK screaming, makes sense
BTW, why didn't you get off at the next station on the line, Bruton?
Much closer to the track

Ah, but the train from Taunton doesn't stop at Bruton! It stops at Cary, then Westbury.

Besides, I love the ride from Cary, along the back lanes through Hadspen. I get to pass the house where I lived  through the 90s (or punting's glory years, as I call them).

I cycled back through the hedgerows in the setting sun this evening, and I lost count of all the ghosts I passed on the way: the dogs who walked there, the horses who grazed, the propunters who kipped in the spare room ...
