Driving home from my sisters last night i was going through a country lane in the woods, rain lashing down, pitch black, trees right next to the road. I had my normal headlights on but was really difficult to see clearly, so put main beam on, of course as soon as i did, cars came around the bend other way on full beam, so i flicked the main beam off, unfortunately as i did this all my lights interior on dash and exterior went out.
Couldn't see a thing so had to stop, hopefully near side of road. My lights come on automatically in the dark which the switch was set to, but does have a manual setting as well to put headlights on, so i switched to manual setting and lights all came back on, inside and out, didn't risk putting main beam back on and was soon on Motorway and back home. Tried main beam when i parked on drive, on and off and seems fine.
Anyone have any idea what may have caused this malfunction as i was bricking it for a few seconds.

I would go through every combo of the switches and lighting stalk in the dark, to be sure you didn't just turn them off accidentally and if there is an issue precisely identify it.
....You might be better off searching the internet for your particular vehicle's user forum..

Thanks Dave, can't really see how i could have switched all the lights off, on stalk you just flick up to turn on main beam, then again to turn off main beam, but will check manual just in case there is a position that turns everything off.
obv the light sensor for some reason sensed that it was light and turned auto on to off.
Surely even if other drivers main beam on full, lit up the road, it would have turned itself back on as was in total darkness?

Most likely you couldn't see well because you were on running lights,(no lights) how long you had it?
You held the dip switch in the main beam flash position, once released it went dark lol. Ie back to running lights.
See folk driving along slowly, no rear lights, on running lights.

I was on normal dipped beam headlights as usual when it's dark, but the heavy rain and overhanging trees made it difficult to see clearly so put main beam on. I think Daves explanation is the most likely as above the auto light setting is the "off" setting, so possibly as i reached for the lever to flick main beam on i may have possibly accidentally pushed the setting up a position to off, will try to do it tonight, never managed it before.

surely the stalk to turn main main beam on cant be in the way of the light switch?

No secret B & B it's an Alfa Romeo, yes Rico the light switch is on the stalk that the main beam is operated from, pretty normal i'd say.
Think yourself lucky,it’s only the main beam.
I’ve got to replace the wife’s big end on Saturday,hoping the crankshaft dosent need re-grinding.has it wrecks the rod.its been knocking,so she’s moaning about it.got a ramp of a mate to get underneath hoping I can get access that way.oil pressure has reduced lubricant so it’s worn.

Now that's a job, having to replace the wifes big end, very tricky.
You can do it without taking out the engine,but the main frame needs resting on the ground,to give you enough slack to get in.
Mine or Cuths? The Alfa i was driving is 14 yo but this never happened before and seems fine now, will try again on drive when dark. Don't know how old CUTH wifes big end is?
The age isn’t relevant,has over the years I’ve constantly done the servicing ,looked after it,it’s a good runner,had a bit of body work done,bumper at rear been banged into a few times,but pulled it out so still holds its shape.fill it up every week ,ad blue aswell to keep the engine clean.
Alfa. Happens now and then.on oldish motorbikes I've had. I thought it might be sticky switch, damp ,salt. Wires frayed or just old age. I just flick between beams before i leave on night rides
Some of the older bikes were ac lighting.

The stelivo,has automatic high beam sensors,could be a software problem.

The digital speedo display of my runaround has decided not to work; the analogue and everything else still work. It's only 2018 and low mileage. Control module (cluster) or software issue?
Won't say make and model, expects peeps to just know this ****, some right roasters on the go, innit
