Only just watched the ITV coverage. The overhead showed that once he lost his initial good position there was no gap for him to run into. He made his own trouble by trying to create one. He should have been aware of what might easily go wrong, and it was a poor ride. It's typical of the weighing room that he then goes on to land the Arc on a very straightforward ride.
