Fat kids don't need to see the adverts, they walk past MCd's and Burger King on the way to the bus stop home(well i certainly did!)
Report leif September 13, 2024 7:24 AM BST
...and when they get to the bus-stop there's a 7ft photo of a Big Muck on the advertising screen.Mischief

The government is so full of contradictions in their policies nothing makes sense. As many have said how do you even define junk food?  Plus have governments realised that no-one under 40 watches live TV anymore? Who cares about the watershed. Its irrelevant
Report salmon spray September 13, 2024 9:20 AM BST
Yep most 12 year olds are watching porn on their smartphones.
Report dave1357 September 13, 2024 10:14 AM BST
They've banned ads pre-9pm online as well. Although it's debateable how that will be enforced. The UK has an obesity problem and unless completely preventable illness is tackled, there is no chance of the nhs continuing as a free service.

Remember the days when you had to smuggle the Empire Stores catalogue into the toilet to look at the women in the big girdles.
Report bluebook September 13, 2024 10:48 AM BST
Looks similar to the previous government's plan to introduce a bill to stop children who turn 15 in 2024, or younger, from ever legally being sold cigarettes.

Our governments don't seem to have the power - or if they do, the will - to deal with the country's most pressing problems.
Report sageform September 13, 2024 3:53 PM BST
Apparently the biggest concern is the number of children UNDER 5 who are obese. Do they watch adverts, get in the car and buy McDonalds or Burger King? Total muddled thinking. Fine the parents who feed it to them.

Processed food. Price and quality driven down by the Grocery Barons.

The masses are poorer but food is cheaper so they eat more.

40% of men, women and children can be classed as obese now.

There is good wholesome food available. Not sure that many care and some won't even know.

Not far off there Barstool also with the policy enacted in the 60/70s to get mothers to work to increase growth how many have time to come home and cook a wholesome meal like they used to do,easier to go to the freezer and shove in the microwave for 10mins.

Surprised by the number of monstrosities you see out and about these days. Basically Jabba the Hutts but uglier.

This is not nannying. This is a forward thinking strategy in aid of the NHS, and every taxpayer's contribution in National Insurance. The NHS is an endless money pit that cannot be maintained much further at this rate. Obesity and obesity related diseases are putting an increasing strain on the NHS; the NHS is bursting at the seam.

I think there will be a 2-tier NHS eg pay and unpay. The present structure cannot be maintained much longer, I firmly believe.

The present and next generation of UK residents are scarily big even the little ones no doubt mirroring their parents. I think the UK may have the highest obesity rate in the EU.

To me obesity is a reflection of laziness and over-eating. Has anyone noticed obesity in a famine area? I have not.

'forward thinking' lol

Ignore what the 'right on' opinion is meant to be. Most fat kids will be growing up in a home where the taxpayer provides the majority of income. It WILL be correlated. The taxpayer is funding the purchase of the poor 'food' (or indeed food banks).

As for the NHS, it's perfectly obvious that the cost to the individual for their healthcare should be aligned with their lifestyle choices. The NHS model is two generations out of date.

"As for the NHS, it's perfectly obvious that the cost to the individual for their healthcare should be aligned with their lifestyle choice"

I cannot disagree with that however, children are usually led by adults ie parents or guardians. There are other factors involved too eg low income families with 2 working adults; proximity to junk food outlets; peer pressure at school; etc.

Nevertheless, home economic and healthy eating are necessary. This will produce healthier children hence adults which also means lesser illness from work = higher gdp and probably lesser NHS spending too = more money for capital spending = higher standard of living = increase in life longevity, etc.

I agree the NHS is 2-generations behind.
Report Cider September 14, 2024 7:23 AM BST
This is the real world, impossible. Healthy living and healthy eating don't get taught into being, or even forced. People need to want to make those choices for themselves. It's cultural and for children it begins with discipline in the home. We have a vast number of 'families' that are supported by other peoples' money. This does not engender discipline, quite the opposite. It's lazy.
Report Cider September 14, 2024 7:30 AM BST
I lost four stone and it's not easy. But there's nothing a government in a supposedly free state could have done to prevent me from getting to being four stone overweight, and equally nothing they could do to make me lose it. It's that old fashioned thing, personal responsibility.

Many years ago there was a doctor at my practice who told salad dodgers that "there were no fat people at Belsen." Controversial, but true.
Report sageform September 14, 2024 10:49 AM BST
Those of us who started on food rationing and "never waste food" have never forgotten. And of course portion sizes keep going up in the cheaper catering outlets which encourages overeating and/or waste.
