Legendary trainer Sir Michael Stoute has announced he will stop training at the end of the year, bringing to a close a glittering career spanning six decades.
Stoute, 78, has trained numerous champions, including the peerless Shergar, one of six Derby winners, as well as the likes of Shareef Dancer, Zilzal and Harbinger, an emphatic winner of the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. The trainer first scored at the highest level when Blue Cashmere won the 1974 Nunthorpe Stakes and his most recent Group 1 winner was Bay Bridge, who landed the 2022 Champion Stakes at Ascot. In a statement to the PA news agency, Stoute said: “I have decided to retire from training at the end of this season. “I would like to thank all my owners and staff for the support they have given me over the years. It has been a great and enjoyable journey.” Stoute has been champion trainer on ten occasions and between 1985 and 2022 there were only four seasons in which he did not send out a Group 1 winner. Beginning with Etienne Gerard in the 1977 Jersey Stakes, Stoute has sent out 82 winners at Royal Ascot, second only to Aidan O'Brien, and he has been leading trainer at the meeting six times. |

A great trainer with an excellent record when as well as all his Group and Royal Ascot winners would even manage a Champion Hurdle too.

Gone against his filly in the first at Leic acey, something I would not have entertained during his glory years. Surprised no mention of Workforce in that report considering he was beaten in the Dante then won the Derby, thrashed by Harbinger and SMS said not to worry he will come back from that, he did and won the Arc!!

A very good trainer who came from a non racing background so no big stable to inherit from Dad or other relatives. It is the right time to stop though.
|

Well ahead of his time.
Little Singspiel globetrotting in Japan, UAE, Canada and Breeders Cup (fun fact Singspiel got smashed by Celtic Swing as a 2yo, but was miles ahead of the rest of the field) Also, always intrigued behind the thought processes of Stoute and Sheikh Mohammed to running Kribensis in the NH arena. |

Not even in the top ten of English trainers Quixall. NAP More nonsense…. |
By:
Undoubtedly a great trainer , but a sad throwback to the 50/60/70s in a lack of communicating with the media. Thank goodness for O'Brien , Appleby , Burke ,etc helping to drag the sport into the 21st century.
|
By:
I suppose it was a fairly short step from the Flat to the Triumph Hurdle for Kribensis and having won that, going on over hurdles made sense. He was not top class on the flat as I recall.
|
By:
Pound for pound he’s as good as any you care to mention…..

Do you actually believe what the trainers say in public?
|

Not many people I believe tbh

may or may not be true but back in the day when stoute/Cecil send decent long distance maidens to Redcar, they used to share a horse box and their lads were always playing pool/having a pint in the PIG AND WHISTLE [ NOW DEMOLISHED } and they always new which was going to win, start fav, little money making machine like THE FAV winning THE MAIDEN in the last at Windsor over a MILE +

So just to clarify, you layed COT for 155k or more but came out with an 11k profit. You own a betting system valued at 600k + but finished in last place in a Div2 tipping comp. and caught 2 huge tuna that coincidentally the same fish were caught by someone else. Stoute ,Not even in the top ten of English trainers Quixall. NAP |
By:
Shafter reduced to low level trolling and even knowing he has been shafted with facts continues to show why he is the closest competitor to Quixall as the Forums biggest loser, takes some doing given Gaze et al!!!
Btw have you not cottoned on yet about the wrong species and Continent not to mention SMS is not English you cretin!!! LOL |

Sad day for the sport. A training great imho. Huge shame Desert Crown's career cut short and Passenger injured this season. An era of old-school trainers gradually dying out and for anyone who grew to love Flat racing following it in the 80s and 90s the end of Stoute's career feels like losing another much cherished icon of the sport, along with the likes of Henry Cecil and Luca Cumani…

Ladies and gentlemen, we are now commencing our approach to Bridgetown, Barbados
The weather is fine with a maximum temperature of ninety degrees Fahrenheit The sky is blue and the palm trees are really cool Captain Willcock and his crew hope you have had a pleasant flight And that you will fly Coconut Airways again. He didn't wanna be a racehorse trainer all his life He'd seen too much of Newmarket town in the night Fly away on Coconut Airways Fly me high, Barbados sky Woh He's going to Barbados Woh Back to the palm trees |

As far as public face is concerned, I was first interested in racing at a time when I had never seen a photograph of most trainers, never mind seen them interviewed on TV. It never affected my views on which could do the job and which could not. George Todd, Jack Jarvis, Noel Murless, Boyd Rochford, all very good but the only one I would recognise a picture of is Murless. I would recognise the top jump trainers from 1950 on as I saw them on course but hardly ever went flat racing before 1964.

That list suggests you have to have the wealthiest owners backing you to be considered great
BULLSHIT! David Elsworth is in that list |
By:
Aye with even.
|
By:
Richard Hannon senior should be in that list too
He didn't go out with a whimper, he went out with his highest ever win tally and strike rate combined |
