The Dixon Bros have two running today, Island Native (2.0 Chep) and Greenwich (8.15 Nwc), both currently showing around the 8/1 mark. Interested in hearing if either or both of the boys drop the Mushroom Strategy and their vow of silence and offer meaningful input on what's expected of the pair, on any of the media channels they are handsomely paid to inform listeners and viewers.

Isleham, what do you think is the role of the pundit? Surely to inform to the best of their ability and certainly not to withhold information!

After your brainless comment, I reckon that back in feudal times you'd be quite happy to go along with the custom of the day and have your new bride broken in by the Lord of the Manor on Honeymoon Night!

Dixon brothers are definitely amongst the betters pundits. Surprised they come in for so much stick. I'd never back a horse just because someone says so but in the main the analysis they provide is pretty good and worth listening to. They will still get more races wrong than they get right just as we all do, but judge them by the overall analysis rather than any 'tips'

Pretty sure they do not receive anywhere near £1500 a day. If they do, I know at least one pundit who will be wanting a payrise!! Actually, the money for TV punditry is not that great.

Although a bit different, about 3 years after my poker book came out in 2006, Sky Poker had me on as a guest pundit for four weeks in the summer of 2009.

Paid £250 a pop and x's - and they scrutinised the latter to make sure I was not on the fiddle!

Enjoyed it but when it stopped I realised I had failed to record the shows properly (stupid, stupid, stupid of me).

So, I asked Sky for a disc of the shows i was on. They sent me a disc but it was the wrong shows. Hence, I asked them to do it again and they wanted £75 to do so!! That was the end of our relationship and so unless someone, somewhere still has recordings of those shows, my brief TV work has been lost forever!!
Report stu June 12, 2025 1:56 AM BST
Sky Poker TV, blimey that's a flashback - Poker still pretty popular enough back then for a TV show. I used to play a fair bit at Sky back in those days.

lol Glasgow, well I'd have wished to had his success, but not his terrible downfall - he was a genius, but a flawed one too sadly, great story though.
I've read the book about his story, The man behind the shades, it's pretty mad really. He was actually better at Gin Rummy almost unbeatable, than Poker, despite winning at the top level in Poker.

But eventually became totally broke despite all the winnings and ability. Lessons for all of us in there.

Report stu June 12, 2025 4:01 PM BST
Second - I basically stopped playing when I realised how efficient the majority of players were, once the pool thinned out.

Add in the modern era of AI 'assistance' for online players, and it is basically pointless IMO these days. Haven't played at all for some time, which is a bit sad, but way things go.
Report stu June 12, 2025 4:50 PM BST
Ironically, live play is now about the only place to play where you can be guaranteed not to be playing vs analysis machines, and well drilled opponents. There are always a few easier players to beat online, but by the time you get to them the other sharks around have drained your funds and those of the weaker players.
Report The Knight June 12, 2025 6:30 PM BST
stu,,,my book was called 'How to Play Internet Poker to Win' by Victor Knight (me) published by Foulsham in 2006.

It was a guide, from basic introduction to online poker through to certain types of play. Aimed at novices. I spent around 4 months in late 2005 playing online poker for the research. IT is still available online.

But the same as you, I quickly realised that online games were being farmed by good class players, especially from the US where poker is much more widely played as a leisure activity. That said, there was a while at the start of internet poker when the Eastern Europeans allowed their pride and somewhat aggressive nature to get in the way of sensible play. But the Yanks soon had them hanging out to dry!

As for playing live, well that has always bothered me. After all, supposing I sit down with, say, Michael Tabor or Richard Branson? Their banks would be infinitely bigger than mine and so, despite how good I might be, they'd eventually clean me out.

Anyway, having a book published about Poker was reasonably profitable - it hit number 20,000 on the Amazon best sellers list in September 2006 (although how Amazon calculate its sales is a whole different ball game!)

But my book confirmed to me that when there is a gold rush on (like Internet Poker was for a while) those who do best are those selling the shovels....hence, I made more from my book than I ever would have done so playing.

No, I will be sticking to horse racing for the rest of my natural!
Report swiftynifty June 12, 2025 6:39 PM BST
The Knight so have you renamed the book?!

Maybe you should write a horse racing one, there's plenty out there with similar claims!
Report stu June 12, 2025 7:53 PM BST
Very interesting, thanks Knight - might look up your book sometime. Happy

Poker used to be massive online, including on here (Betfair). But like you say I think people eventually realised they were getting 'farmed' and moved on to other things...but we still have the olden days and some good memories.
Report The Knight June 12, 2025 9:23 PM BST
swifty...not down to me to rename the book!! I never wanted it called that in the first place because it was meant to be a guide to how to play  - from what PC's worked best through to the best sites - but the publisher wanted How to Win in the title and it was their money paying for my time!

You make a good point, though.

My first book was called How to win at Spread Betting and my second 'Greyhound Racing to Win'. Three books and three separate publishers but they all wanted 'to Win' somewhere in the title.

I would love to do a book about 'Safe Betting on the Horses'. In an age where losses lead to affordability checks etc.  I think I could educate punters about how to play the nags better. BUT, no publisher wants something boring like that and with horse racing in decline I doubt my idea will ever become a reality!
Report swiftynifty June 12, 2025 9:27 PM BST
They know what catches the eye, and if it sells more , that's the bottom line.

I've got a book 'How to Win at Horse Racing' on my bookshelf, someone else got in first!
