Looked and sounded like a young Kenneth Williams, a career in acting beckons if the riding goes pear shaped, " Oh Matron".

Emily Upjohn is a difficult ride more so as she gets older. She's sensitive to being lit-up. Maybe back her when she's least fancied or a complete outside eg in The Juddmonte, if she's entered.

Personally speaking, if I was asked if I thought that Shoemark would have at least one more winner before he expired, on balance I think I would probably have said yes

The Godens have 7 retained jockeys. As such, I'm not surprised Marquand, Murphy, Rossa Ryan, etc gave the job a miss.
|
|
By:
How do you know they were offered the job?
|
|
By:
'penzance', I do not. I was merely inferring nevertheless, I think Shoemark was not the only jockey approached for the post.
|
|
By:
7 retained jockeys by owners who have horse/s with the Gosdens, therefore Shoemark couldn't ride them even if he wanted to, is what Gosden explained earlier today when interviewed,(referred to his 2 royal ascot winners as an example). In addition, when asked by Chapman if Shoemark had his 100% support, Gosden confirmed that he did.
|
|
By:
So did Jimmy Fortune once have Gosden's support.
|
|
By:
Not really neither did M Roberts
|
|
By:
Fortune rode nearly 1800x for Gosden.
|
|
By:
Yes he did but that meant nothing at the end of the day.
However, it was later in 2008 that the first cracks emerged in Gosden's relationship with Fortune when the jockey was passed over in favour of Frankie Dettori for the winning ride aboard Raven's Pass in the Breeders' Cup Classic. Gosden cited an issue with Fortune's fitness but the jockey rode the Gosden-trained Red Spider in the Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster on the same day as the Breeders' Cup. The same situation arose again 12 months later when Gosden again elected to use other riders ahead of his own stable jockey at the Breeders' Cup. Visibly agitated when quizzed by reporters over the situation, Gosden said: "It was a very difficult decision and not one I found easy to make. It is not my fault that my normal jockey has not experienced racing on American racetracks. You saw Frankie Dettori win two races here last year. The owners see that he is available. To them, it is a no-brainer. It's no fault of Jimmy's but he has never ridden here." Fortune continued to ride for Gosden on the all-weather after the Breeders' Cup and was expecting to resume his role next month as part of the build-up to the new turf season. "Of course I am extremely disappointed," he said. "It has been a good job and we have had five or six very successful years together but I feel as I am leaving on a high. Greater jockeys than me have lost their jobs before – Kieren Fallon and Mick Kinane have both experienced the same sort of thing and both of them didn't look back afterwards. |

@nickluck "We're reviewing options for who might already be in Deauville" It sounds as though Inspiral could be set for a new jockey as she goes for a third Prix Jacques le Marois on Sunday: https://x.com/nickluck/status/1820403163024781653 |

The rides on Emily and Inspiral are poisoned chalices imo...both past their best days and the trainer knows it...well,John does, not sure if Sadie knows the time of day..

Yes i certainly agree with that lead on.

The pressure is mounting on Kieran Shoemark, and with Cheveley Park considering a new jockey for Inspiral in the Prix Jacques le Marois on Sunday, could time be running out for John and Thady Gosden's retained jockey? Graeme Rodway and Tom Park have their say on whether the Gosdens should stick or twist with the rider . . .
Stick By Graeme Rodway, deputy betting editor How do you replace the irreplaceable? That has been the problem for John and Thady Gosden since Frankie Dettori left for America at the end of last year and it shouldn't be a surprise that it hasn't been all plain sailing for Kieran Shoemark as he has huge shoes to fill. But has he really done that much wrong? Critics will point to Emily Upjohn and Shoemark's failure to get a Group 1 out of her, but I don't think any of her defeats have been jockey error. Emily Upjohn (left) and Kieran Shoemark are collared late in the Group 1 Pretty Polly Emily Upjohn (left) and Kieran Shoemark are collared late in the Group 1 Pretty Polly Credit: Caroline Norris (racingpost.com/photos) She was beaten ten and a half lengths in the Coronation Cup at Epsom and eight and a half lengths in the Nassau at Goodwood last week, while Shoemark actually gave her a good ride in the Pretty Polly at the Curragh in my book. He was just unlucky to bump into a top-class filly. Bluestocking has since finished second in the King George and, if you take her out of the Pretty Polly, Shoemark would have steered Emily Upjohn to a wide-margin Group 1 victory. Make no mistake, Shoemark is no Dettori but we won't see another one as good as the Italian for a long time and impressive front-running rides on Friendly Soul at Ascot, and Lead Artist at Goodwood, prove that Shoemark has the ability to cope with the task that is ahead of him. The Gosden team almost always finishes the year strongly and Shoemark should be trusted to turn things around in the coming months. Confidence is the key and that comes with winners. Twist By Tom Park, audience editor Unfortunately things are not working out for Kieran Shoemark this season and, while John Gosden has quite rightly pointed out that he has not had the quality of horse this year, he is clearly a jockey low on confidence and struggling with the pressure. Unless that changes fast, I fail to see how this relationship continues. There were glimpses of brilliance last week. He was superb on Lead Artist in the Group 3 Thoroughbred Stakes, but unfortunately it is his rides on the big horses in the big races that have simply not been up to standard. Emily Upjohn and Free Wind were the rides in particular that were heavily criticised by plenty last week. And rightly so. I don't think either of them were actually good enough to win their race, but the frustration for those who backed those horses is you knew they were beaten before they even entered the final couple of furlongs. Races are not always won by the best horse, but Shoemark doesn't seem to be winning races often enough when he is on the best horse, nor is he winning enough when he isn't. Kieran Shoemark was criticised for his ride on Emily Upjohn (right) in the Nassau Stakes last week Credit: Edward Whitaker (racingpost.com/photos) He seems to be riding with fear. On Emily Upjohn and Free Wind last week he looked as if he was trying to stick to a pre-race script, but seldom do things work out that simple. At Goodwood, more than any other racecourse, you have to ride with an element of freedom. He is, of course, an easy target. This is his first big job and he is following the biggest of footsteps. He is what David Moyes was in following Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United. Like Moyes, the level of expectation is not as high as last season, but he is not doing the job that is expected of him at the moment and someone else deserves the opportunity. |

Gosden is ruthless as far as Jockeys go but i think he will stick by Shoemark.

I mean he got Roberts the boot and sacked Fortune and Frankie so nothing is certain.

The inmates at Clairehaven are much of a muchness and not comparable to a few seasons ago eg Golden Horn, Red Lion, Stradivarius, Jack hobbs, Enable plus a few more I cannot remember. Now, it's difficult to even name one "star".
I wonder if any seasoned jockey eg Marquand, Murphy and Ryan to name three will want to take up the jockey post at Clarehaven. The Gosden has 7 retained jockeys even Havlin. |

By:
Loughnane???

By:
Why would a good jockey want to be the 8th choice in a stable? Sir Cecil only had one stable jockey ie Cauthen. There was no retained jockeys by the big owners.
A serious question. Do these 7 retained jockeys ride work on their owners inmates or just in the races? If not, how'd they know the idiosyncrasy of the horses? |

Emily Upjohn’s part-owner Jon Shack has declared his “100 per cent support” for Kieran Shoemark as the jockey continues to be scrutinised in his role as first jockey to the Gosdens.
Shoemark, 28, looks set to be replaced on six-time Group 1 winner Inspiral in Sunday’s Group 1 Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard Jacques le Marois at Deauville and came in for criticism in places for his rides on Emily Upjohn and Free Wind at Glorious Goodwood last week. The rider, who stepped up to ride as first jockey for John and Thady Gosden this season following the departure of Frankie Dettori, was also caught in the final furlong when partnering Emily Upjohn in last month’s Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes at the Curragh. John Gosden has repeatedly backed Shoemark, saying at Goodwood that the rider “hasn’t had the rub of the green” and that several of his owners, including Wathnan Racing, Shadwell Estates and Qatar Racing, had their own retained jockeys. Shack, who initially raced Emily Upjohn in partnership with Stuart Roden before Lord and Lady Lloyd-Webber bought into the mare, offered his complete support to Shoemark, and the wider Gosden team, in a letter to the Racing Post on Wednesday. He said: “As co-owner of Emily Upjohn, I wanted to express my 100 per cent support of Kieran Shoemark, the Gosdens and the Clarehaven team. “Kieran Shoemark, Robert Havlin, Frankie Dettori and the devoted staff at the Gosdens have all played important parts in the wonderful Emily Upjohn story and drama [which has] allowed me and my family to ‘live the dream’ as racehorse owners at the highest global level. “Our appreciation of all these participants, plus the mare herself, knows no bounds and we stay positive as the drama unfolds into the future.” Emily Upjohn finished sixth in the Group 1 Nassau Stakes at Goodwood having been sent off the 7-4 favourite. Her next start is likely to be in the Group 1 Pertemps Network Yorkshire Oaks at York on August 22. |
