Incrdeible trainer over the years but not sure why he's hanging on, he's said he doesn't get that kick any more.

Possibly keeping going out of loyalty to his staff.

he lost his long term partner some years back as I recall. He may simply be carrying ion to keep himself busy. One would hope he has a last hurrah but, Passenger aside, it is difficult to see him having much chance in G1 - 3 races this season .

Broke his heart when whispering death moved back to West Indies,

i do remember a few years back, he sent a fav ( cant recall the name ) to the irish derby , and was bullied out of the race by a barrage of ccoolmore bullies, and vowed never to run a horse there again .

whatan era   , stoute, cumani, harwood,tree,cecil. brittain, hern,cole,hannon, wragg , and then piggott, eddery, starkey, swinburn, carson, roberts, cauthen, mercer,     what a list (and i know ive forgotten a few out ), to the mediocre of today

Add to that list many of the old money knowledgeable owners and owner breeders,elisjohn...

I think that Desert Crown was the breaking of his heart...I always felt he was going to be his"Frankel"...a King George day without a Stoute horse would have been unthinkable ..I may be wrong but his only entry I see for Saturday is Passenger at York..

christ how did i miss John Dunlop out of my list, a massive fav of mine, and  Salsabil , and of course B hills, another trainer jockey combo i liked was thompson jones and murray, chappel hyam and reid , my word we were spoilt
