The amount of gold sold might not have been significant, the price was very much though - it was a smidgeon or present. Also, the UK was not beset with Covid or Putin war in Ukraine - the main causes of higher cost of living. In addition a higher immigration and social dependence/spending stifled most economic progress.

Such a shame the revenues from North Sea Oil was miss-spent and not used to rebuild the UK economy.

I can agree with that last point 100%

Norway discovered oil and with their revenue they set up a sovereign wealth fund that is now worth 1.6 Trillion and Norway is one of the wealthiest nations on earth and we're not.

One might also argue that the Cameron/Osborne rush to austerity was also a huge mistake.
Owing to the huge number of Poles & Romanians filling employment vacancies in the 2010s the UK was just about the only country which did not enter into a period of recession after the 2008 banking crash.

All manner of public infrastructure spending was wiped out because of austerity. And to top it all the Cons also went after the Eastern Europeans who were actually adding to growth..

The more I think about it, people like Brown and Reeves are probably what we need.

People forget how well Brown dealt with the 2008 crash.

Couldnt really fault him (Broon).
Not down to him that the banks decided to succumb to greed.

Luck does play a big part in UK politics eg Labour was left with no money when Blair came in. The selling of the family silver and oil revenues were "mismanaged" by the Conservatives and sued to plug the holes left behind by Labour.

Norway was very lucky. A delay or a change of mind to join the EU has saved the Norwegians a lot of money. Otherwise it would have gone to facilitate Poland, Bulgaria, Romania, Czech Rep and others former Russia enclaves.

Scotland was living off mainland UK from infinity prior to the discovery of North Sea Oil. Even the technology for extraction did not derive from Scotland. However, a town like Aberdeen was enriched by the revenues derived though.

Where was Ms Sturgeon on election night? The SNP was annihilated. Has Ms Sturgeon assumed responsibility, or she's still denying the demise was not her doing?

It was Alistair Darling who was chancellor at the time of 2008 crash and it was he that saw us through it.

Brown had plenty to do it with it as PM and and long experience as chancellor himself. Both Brown and Darling did well.

Brown was left a near basket case when Mr Blair had enough. The former used up every bit of sympathy and tolerance from the UK public.
