Totally disagree mitolo. The American loans began during the war under the lend lease scheme and it was the economist Keynes who negotiated the post war loans. No government achieved as much and with so little as the 1945 regime. Attlee and Bevan practically ran the country during the wartime coalition with Churchill otherwise occupied.

After Winnie got back him, he  did not reverse any of Attlee's programme,  Harold McMillan thought Attlee a great PM.

In surveys of best UK PM Mr Attlee is always top or near top.

ive read frank fields biography of him (more like hagiography) and attlee was decent, principled and hard-working but that doesnt mean everything he did was correct or in our best interest

he is indeed consistently at the top. so is fatcher. i didnt say he was no good-see above. just over-rated, msotly by those who dont know much about politics, present company excluded. individual ignorance does equate to collective wisdom so being popular isnt a gauge i trust for anything
