For quite a long time the word 'length' has not been an accurate term for what is actually measured - they should say winning 'time gap calculation' instead, but then no-one would understand it!

Not sure why they couldn't just go back to doing it visually though, then it really would be 'lengths' when the winner crosses the line - though a bit trickier for longer gaps to calculate, so could do it just for say up to 5 lengths or so.

The word length implies the length of a horse - but it isn't used that way.
