Market all over the second favourite despite being 12 pounds out of handicap. Favourite a big drifter.
First of all Bowen allows the outsider to lead, despite the favourite being an impressive winner making all last time, and then when they start racing bungles the stride pattern at two successive fences - just the sort of thing you don't want to do at Cartmel. Uses up too much energy to get back on terms and bingo gamble landed. I don't know why some rave about Bowen. He's the equivalent of those journeyman jocks who have been winning the Flat jockeys championship.
Jumped great early on, then got in too close at a couple on the final circuit as you state and lost momentum which arguably cost it the race. Bit harsh blaming the jockey though. It was conceding the winner far too much weight despite the winner being out the handicap.

I don't think the weight beat him. The ride, and jumping beat him. He started by ballooning the first fence. At Wexford under Torrens he goes straight into the lead, doesn't make a single mistake, and finishes strongly. Yes, he took a subsequent hike, but contrast that with Bowen's effort.
It takes a leap of faith to be punting horses like that from 12lbs 'wrong'. Those closest to the winner might have been hoping for a big run, but they would have known they needed a bit of help, and Bowen provided plenty of it.

Just had a look back at it. It should be said that the winner, who was making his chase debut (and evidently is already a better chaser than hurdler) wasn't always foot perfect either.
Well into the race, I got the impression that Bowen thought he only had the leader to worry about as he sat in behind him on the poached ground and by the time he pulled off the inside, the winner was already making his move.
That said, he got there to lead and have every chance.
