What a poor Brigadier Gerard Group3 tonight

Just the four runners now!

I was thinking that too, used to be one of the big races of the season. Terrible turnout, not just the small field, the quality of it too.

I’m not sure if it’s just a sign of the times, and that nothing seems as good as it used to be, but some, or even most of our group races these days seem to be of a poor standard.

It's not poor, it's pathetic. With the exception of the Heron, it's a poor card full stop.

I hope for once Racing TV forget the cheerleading and call it what it is.

Not so surprising when you see the amount of group races these days compared to the Brigadier's days.

the plan to run King Of Steel scared others off.

Will be an odd quirk if Royal Rhyme finishes 2nd. I was at Sandown 45 years ago for this race, and Rhyme Royal (Hern/Carson) finished 2nd in a ding-dong battle with Jellaby (Walwyn/Eddery). Sexton Blake (Cauthen) was 3rd, with Swiss Maid (Piggott) unplaced. Mrs Penny was a beaten fav in the opening 2yo race, and the Temple Stakes was contested by Double Form, Ahonoora and Greenland Park.

Double Form and Ahonoora are well remembered by me.

Greenland Park was a very fast 2yo filly who won the Molecomb, Queen Mary and Cornwallis. She butted heads with Devon Ditty. She didn't win anything afterwards, but was placed in several Group races at 3, including the July Cup and the Abbaye.

Thanks ged, I sometimes get mixed up between Double Form and that other old sprinter Double Jump.

ged, used to look after Greenland Park when i worked for Gainsborough Stud, her best progeny was a good filly called Fitnah, can't remember what she won.

That's interesting ashleigh. Fitnah was trained by Criquette Head, and won the Prix Saint Alary, and was 2nd in both the Prix de Diane and the Vermeille.

that's her, knew she was good, we also had 1,000 guineas winner Ma Biche that Criquette trained.

I have good and not so good memories of Ma Biche. I had a decent bet on her, and also did a forecast on the day with a Wragg filly who just got pipped for 2nd. The filly that pipped her (Royal Heroine) got DQ'd weeks later for substance abuse.

This is a very poor renewal. I still remember dialling in to listen to a paid commentary costing over £1 for 3mins from a public phone in the late 70's or early 80's. I cannot remember the name of the horse but I vividly remember Sir Stoute had a very strong fancy in the race. I think it might have  "Soldier" in its name. It was also  a small field.

Been to this meeting many times, always a quality card.

Derby winners have run in the big one. Tonight's feature race seems very lacklustre :(

Brian Taylor

While racing at the Sha Tin Racecourse in Hong Kong on 8 December 1984, his mount, Silver Star stumbled, throwing him off while crossing the finish line. Taylor sadly succumbed two days later in Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital from the serious neck and head injuries he had received.
