These look weak races.

I thought the pedigree standouts were the two Williams newcomers. Nothing for them last night, but well found in the market this morning. Normally, I would associate the stable with the odd bumper winner at Chepstow with ex-Irish pointers, so this a little different. I backed Woodythewoodpecker at double figures last night. The other one now looks a bit too short, for me at least. The negatives would be that they have 50,000 pedigrees and were bought for 20,000 and 14,000. Looks perhaps don't match those pedigrees, but they might just have been well bought. The other concern would be a lack of pace which seems par for the course in Southwell bumpers. Isabel Williams has ridden a couple of bumper winners, but I associate her with bringing one through on the bridle off a decent pace. She could easily get out muscled if it's left to a burn up.

Woodythewoodpecker weak close to the off 5/1-8/1, and that proved correct. Unfortunately, the race highlighted the problem with the jock, she just isn't strong enough, and to be really effective needs the field to be dying in front of her. Horse not helped by the ground being a good bit softer than the original good.

Lavelle stable doing the bookmakers a good turn again. Had one at Warwick the other night that was smashed up only to run like a carthorse.

Jukebox Joker also weak just before the off, and the market again correct. Much too free, and never competitive, even though he probably handled conditions better than Woodythewoodpecker.

Weak race, but the winner quite impressive, and should be up to defying a penalty under similar conditions.
