Yes he was called Franco certainly in 1989ish at Royal Ascot .
There’s a clip on YouTube where Dettori was injured and missed out and Jimmy Lindley explains why FRANKO was unavailable to ride.

It would be interesting to know who gave him the moniker which stuck and defines him for the English speaking world, a simple fact is that Lanfranco is the same in English as Italian. As for JImmy Lindley he was probably like the majority of English commentators/ presenters who are either too lazy or too thick to learn translations of horses and jockeys names.

Thomo was still calling Stefano Cherchi, Stefaaano Cherche' as if he was French, even Marco was called Jee Anny by most.

One consideration, although a bit patronising, is that presenters/commentators may be using the vernacular of the racing public. I remember years ago the extel commentator saying "percy polis" for "persepolis". Was this simply because that is the way the majority of his audience would have pronounced it?

I should have said pronunciation as well as translation but an aside probably lost to most after Lanfranco rode his 6 timer at Santa Anita, the jockey who short headed him in the Santa Anita Derby was Antonio Fresu a Sardo like Stefano and Marco.

One I hear often is Two Auld Pals being called Two Old Pals dave, surely most of the audience would know what Auld means, not even foreign so no excuse imvho?
