Nothing wrong with the Derby a true test for a horse and won by the best too.

Being abused and kicked to suit the overpaid brigade…..

But, if they were choosing a venue today for a new race of similar esteem, I doubt Epsom would get a look in... Probably Newmarket Newbury Ascot?

The quirky nature of Epsom makes it a special place
The different layouts of our UK and Irish courses is unique to us, I believe, and is what makes our sport great

Glad to hear that Reg and watching a race on the turf course at Santa Anita last night made me think that the Americans would feel the same comparing that course with their others. But at last we do have a fair variety over here.

Yes, sparrow, but all their courses are left handed for a start, and flat?
And all seem to have a shortish home straight

Moving the Derby to a Saturday was a body blow to the race and should never have happened.

Will we have fireworks again this year?

Circus nowadays big Ed getting all excited…..would love to see Stoute unearth a 2000 Dante Derby…..

only ever been to one derby,on a wed, piggott rode winner,teenso,so i guess i did the nearly perfect drby for a once in a lifetime visit ,
of course i didnt back it
got sucked in to the irish horse carlingford loch will love the ground cant be out of the frame etc

Correct sparrow it was a body blow when it left Wednesday but it is

still the race I look forward to more than any other ,the race must never leave Epsom and should never be messed around with like last year ,

I’m surprised there seems no enthusiasm from those who run racing to give Wednesday a try again but then again those who run the sport are only in it for the short haul ,unlike those who have cared about the sport and the race for a huge chunk of there lives.

We’re you ever aware there was an inspection on the morning of the race that year ?

i was down staying in london for a few days going to ENGLAND v SCOTLAND match at wembley after the derby,found out about the inspection when we got on the epsom train about 10 0 clock in morning

my dad was a big piggott fan never spoke to me for a month for not backing him

You found out slightly earlier than I did carlingford CASTLE reminded me of the minstrel in his looks .

Almost as criminal as moving the derby was the ending of the home internationals.

me and my mate were playing pool in a boro pub on the monday night , he worked offshore and i was on weeks hols,he said do you fancy getting train to london for deby and england match in morning ,so we went spent tues going ran bucket tkt shops to get england v scotland tks,found some digs in bayswater, couldnt go oaks on the sat because had to get back for my sisters wedding,so on the friday was down carnaby getting some LAANDAN THREADS for the wedding, and if i remember right it was the yr SUN PRINCESS/CARSON won the oaks so every punter including me and my dad had a right few £ on it, GREAT CAREFREE  DAYS

She was a great horse mind you most classic winners are ,tying the derby up with a big game at Wembley reminds me of 68 when the derby was run on the last Wednesday in may ,some of the United players went to see the derby before playing benfica that evening.

And yes great carefree days

LOL i watched the utd v benfica ngame in 68 with my dad and my brother in a bed and breakfast in GREAT YARMOUTH on our anual 2 weeks hols, 1 was 8 my 1st big game i looked forward to watching, the 66 world cup final was on in the  house but at 6 it passed me by somewhat

That’s the same as me remember 68 clearly although to young to have gone ,but don’t remember 66 which I regret as my mum was west German and her 3 brothers stayed at our house for the tournament,the neighbours for many years after told me what a great time they all had especially playing crown green balls at the local pub each night my uncles would never had heard of it until then.

For many thousands of working people in London Derby Day on Wednesday's was an unofficial Bank Holiday.

Brilliant atmosphere sparrow watching all the buses arriving at Epsom

Those people in the jockey club and others involved just didn't get it at all.  It was the flat race of the year similar to the National for jump fans.

If you ever get a chance to run across from the start to the finish line at Epsom I suggest you take it ,looking at them as they head uphill away from the start and then the run across as several others tried to beat you to the better viewing positions near the finish was one of the best pieces of fun you can have in your 60s ...Epsom is the only place the Derby should be held as it asks everything of a horse , speed ,agility , stamina . That's why its the ultimate test of a 3 year old horse ...
