, who progressed in a fairytale story from a low-grade handicapper to win multiple times at Group 1 level, has died as the result of a fracture sustained in an accident in her stall.
Trained by John Quinn, Highfield Princess had been set to return to the racecourse this year with owner-breeder John Fairley saying he and his family enjoyed the “sheer thrill” of watching her compete across the world.
However, Highfield Princess was retired last week having injured a hind leg after getting cast in her stall. In a statement released on Sunday, Quinn, and his son Sean, said the filly "fought with the same extraordinary spirit she showed on the racecourse" but did not recover from the fracture.
John Quinn said: "Highfield Princess took us all on the most remarkable journey. She possessed Group 1 ability but also a Group 1 attitude. Whether it was a routine canter or a big sprint race around the world she would put in 100 per cent effort into what she did. I am grateful for all that she did for herself and for our team. We will miss her more than words can say."
Once raced off a 58 h'cap mark and ended up winning 4 G1 races, amassing over a million.
Would have been valuable as a broodmare no doubt.
One in a million.
