No doubt the arch weasel in the studio will be trying desperately to find any excuse other than jockey...
Report the.mad.dog.man • March 22, 2024 2:51 PM GMT
very bad ride
Report charbar67 • March 22, 2024 2:52 PM GMT
What gets me is R. Hughes was a top class jockey and you would think he can spot a mediocre jockey a mile away
Report themightymac • March 22, 2024 2:52 PM GMT
The horse didn`t exactly help him. Green turning into the straight and all over the place. But trying to be too clever is not a great idea. Make things simple when you are on the best horse and keep things straight forward.
Report themightymac • March 22, 2024 2:55 PM GMT
And thats why it is virtually impossible to win long term betting horses. Best horse in the race by a mile and they still get beat due to human error. I`m sure if he rode it in the same race 100 times he would win 99 times despite being green.
Report CROPSICK • March 22, 2024 2:56 PM GMT
Touble is they get bulled up by the oncourse media when they ride a winner and then think they are the next dettori.
Report grayhawk • March 22, 2024 2:57 PM GMT
Charbar67....When R.Hughes started training he said he was going to use Shane Kelly plenty ...something along the lines of him being a good jockey

That says plenty about his opinion on jockeys.

Doesn't get many rides off him nowadays

looked like a julian wilson/ramseden  i dont own horses for others to get the best prices, ride LaughLaugh
Report DonegalPrince • March 22, 2024 3:01 PM GMT
Hughsie rode the majority of his horses, at least for the first 2/3rds of his career, in that "get'em settled out the back , come with a late run" style. Unsurprising he instructs his jockeys to ride like that frequently.
Report MJK • March 22, 2024 3:03 PM GMT
If I backed that I'd take solace in the fact that Hughes has probably done his b****.
Report Cider • March 22, 2024 3:06 PM GMT
When they know one is well in they have half an eye on the next race. A bit of cakeism can be expensive.
Report sparrow • March 22, 2024 3:10 PM GMT
I did notice that Rooke was preferred to Marsh on the previous winner although Marsh had ridden it first time out.
Report howard • March 22, 2024 3:12 PM GMT
just shows you such horses at the right price will make you money long term...but when you're left with 1.7/1.8 brave lays probably won't cost too much.

Report DancingBraveTheBest • March 22, 2024 3:32 PM GMT
Charming Howard.....not sure if you have any experience riding racehorses but I have 15 years experience, yes the horse was still a bit green but surely you can see the horse was put in an uncompromising position by the rider hence the result.....no need to get personal Howard....everyone can have opinions but you shouldnt be disrespectful just cause the opinions dont agree with yoursHappy

fair enough but you're getting a bit McCoy like there.  Have been on a horse and very frightened ..never again.  Rico said it all. Maybe a superlative jock would have won on it but punters knew who was riding.  Non trier is BS imo.
Report howard • March 22, 2024 3:37 PM GMT
that was to Rico's earlier post Laugh
Report Whippin Piccadilly • March 22, 2024 3:41 PM GMT
Was it really that bad of a ride? With 2 confirmed front runners in the field a decent pace looked likely but it didn't really metallise. Then when FM asked for an effort the horse looked to lug in up the straight and still looked green.  Looking as his physique, he'd certainly appreciate a much more galloping track. Connections should be able to find an equally weak race at Bath/Nottingham.
Report GLASGOWCALLING • March 22, 2024 3:45 PM GMT
... only sitting 10 lengths of the pace and wide as a bus, worse ride i have seen for a while and NO not pocket talking.
Report formoftheace • March 22, 2024 3:45 PM GMT
You’ll see a lot of this during the season……

Seldom notice if you haven’t played…..
Report Whippin Piccadilly • March 22, 2024 3:49 PM GMT
Didn't play in the race but I watch pretty much every Flat race and my own race reading tells me the horse was still green.

Report Rico-Dangleflaps • March 22, 2024 3:56 PM GMT
race defo wasnt run to suit..best horse in race though.
Report Whippin Piccadilly • March 22, 2024 3:57 PM GMT
Probably not, Howard. But I can see how those who backed it must be annoyed, because he's clearly the best horse in the race and will be rated much higher than the rest of that field come the end of the season. But the race just didn't pan out for it today.
Report howard • March 22, 2024 4:11 PM GMT
that's right but they jump to the non trier angle rather quick. did myself 40 years ago but surely there's nobody under 50 on this forum Grin
Report bin bagged • March 22, 2024 5:33 PM GMT
If the horse had responded to the jockeys urgings after the bend it would have won but the horse didn't. Jockey did nowt wrong.
Report the.mad.dog.man • March 22, 2024 6:08 PM GMT
lol
Report GEORGE.B • March 22, 2024 6:23 PM GMT
The time of the race is the jockey's defence, it's a slow time, comparatively the worst on the card, and if he's been instructed to hold the horse up, then he's been up against it based on how the race has panned out.

To make matters worse, he met with a bit of trouble at the top of the straight and then has to get a sizable sort reorganised.

Certainly nothing dodgy about it imo.
Report bin bagged • March 22, 2024 6:50 PM GMT
Ran green from 2f pole to the 1f pole. That's what lost it the race. If it hadn't of ran green it wins. Jockey exonerated.
Report 1st time poster • March 23, 2024 9:20 AM GMT
so in other words the jocks/trainers plan was to let an odds on fav be hostage to fortune to every other jocks /trainers plans in the race, seems sensible tactics, NOT
Report formoftheace • March 23, 2024 9:24 AM GMT
What about So Chic in the last on the track it normally puts in a good shift…..

44 after a furlong ….then appears on the telly at the finish albeit well beaten

Smelly imv

"so in other words the jocks/trainers plan was to let an odds on fav be hostage to fortune to every other jocks /trainers plans in the race, seems sensible tactics, NOT"  Thing is they want to win but if connections haven't backed it  or even if they have the main concern is to educate an inexperienced horse get it to settle and learn from the race and have a better horse going forward. Punters should realise this happens with lightly raced horses and perhaps not take the worst price it's ever been.
Report 1st time poster • March 23, 2024 10:53 AM GMT
he wasnt just held up ,it was exagerated hold up ride ,reflecting his odds.chances behind the ambulance etc, could have held him been closer to pace to adapt to a race with no pace,if he,s a hot fav in future other jocks.trainers arnt going to serve  up the circumstances he wants on a plate
Report GLASGOWCALLING • March 23, 2024 11:00 AM GMT
To try and simplify, if that horse was trying it was possibly the worse ride I have seen for a good few seasons, if it wasnt then the jockey done his job.
Report howard • March 23, 2024 11:15 AM GMT
He was stepping up from 7f to 1m2f. And yes he's not a top jock. Connections don't care if their horse is odds-on punters that are on at that price do. The other angle is they thought it was so superior that they could give priority to educate let the others pinch some distance and still win.  Bottom line is they have a horse for future races and punters have lost money. They don't care. But non trier BS imo.
Report DancingBraveTheBest • March 23, 2024 3:24 PM GMT
not sure many on here have said non trier....most think was just a very poor ride....and yes Howard...anyone can have an opinion....even people who have never sat on a horse yet alone been a workrider. You seem intent on attempting (and failing) to wind people upSad

Jockeys trade in their brains for a riding licence , no one said they are clever . Most can ride horses , but are clueless when it comes to judging races Laugh. Armchair pundits know a great deal to how a race should be ridden to how these jockeys ride them ! They have much more experience . More jockeys need to watch racing as well as ride . They would learn so much more imo.
