Luck, in terms of ground, and fallers, played quite a part in both Slade Steel and Captain Guinness winning.

They haven't all run great. Ask anyone who was on Maskada. It's often said how well his horses jump, but that one jumped as if it hadn't seen a fence before, let alone won the race last year. Lantry Lady was another to turn in a shoddy round.

Several have been smashed up today. Envoi Allen has a very good Festival record, but the ground is not a plus. Can't see Arctic Bresil at all. Very expensive horse who has been a huge disappointment. Why should he win a much better race than the one's he couldn't win before. It wouldn't be a surprise if there are three better than Birdle Or Bust.

DD, I know you've got it in for Slade Steel (though I don't know why). However, it's harsh to say he was lucky. I think he's just clearly the 2nd best novice 2-2 1/2 m hurdler this year. Soft ground is hardly unprecedented.

Captain Guiness was lucky, but HdB got him to the race, fit, which can't be said of a lot of "top" trainers this week. As Willie put it after the Champion Hurdle, you've got to show up to win.

Must have laid them.

A tad harsh, you need a lot to go right and not a lot to go wrong, to win any race at Cheltenham.
Horses run/jump badly for a lot of reasons, not necessarily always the trainers fault.

its the chelt over load
they interviewed vential biggin up a horse who finished 3rd in ch chase beaten a distance, looking like been pulled up before edward fell
they bigged up yopung costello for finishing 4th in supreme after travelling 12 wide the dunguibe route and virtually had to get off and straighten it up to get around the home bend, horrendus ride but all about getting on podium for tv/media

I haven't got it in for Slade Steel. I don't think I would be the only one to expect Mystical Power (and maybe Firefox) to overturn that form on quicker ground.

On the day he wasn't lucky, but the ground conditions are down to luck, and clearly they enabled him to outstay the rest.

So if the ground conditions had been different he would have been unlucky!

Who's crying? It's sounds like you're the one playing the angry man.

On your basis unless you use a pin you wouldn't have a bet. Betting is about continually analysing results, and not just accepting them at face value.

Luck doesn't have to just even out, it's not a coin toss.

I backed the runner up DD and I could not say for certain he would reverse the form on better ground but might at a flatter track, seemed to down tools rather quickly tbh. Btw I have had several fallers, unseats and BDs in the compy but luck does have a tendency to even out when picks benefit from others doing the same.
