Yesterday a horse bolted up at 7/4 in it's first handicap having been beaten a total of 135 lengths in it's previous 3 runs in novice company. Good training or bent ?

Don't come up very often at a Chelts handicap but I thought this was a certainty for the MP when they waited a year to preserve the mark after getting beat by GDC. Brought down at the second, still hurts!

Sixth in the Boodles Handicap Hurdle over 2m in 2000, he was unlucky to run into handicap blot Galopin Des Champs (who was running off a mark of just 142) in the Martin Pipe Handicap Hurdle the following year, pulling a long way clear of the remainder.

He was sent off at 7-2 favourite to make amends in the same race in 2022, despite finishing last of six in his prep race, but was brought down at the second. However, he quickly gained compensation when winning the Grade 3 handicap hurdle at Aintree the following month.

After three fruitless runs between November and January, he returned to Cheltenham to contest this race last year and duly bounced back to his best, finding plenty in the closing stages to win narrowly in a race where the front three pulled a long way clear.

He’s had his usual early-season struggles this year, and it was a little disconcerting that he bled on one occasion, but as a result he’s back on the same mark as in this race last year.

Skelton has stated that Langer Dan has been treated for stomach ulcers in recent weeks, having given a similar update on Greatwood Hurdle disappointment L’Eau Du Sud shortly before he bounced back with a big run in the Betfair Hurdle at Newbury.

It would be a brave man to bet against Langer Dan returning to form here and he looks fairly priced with that in mind."

Bolts in off 141 doing cartwheels in an extremely competitive handicap.

Even last year wins of 141 but got beat 35 Lengths the time before of 142.

Way to win at Cheltenham with a 150-155 horse i guess.

Like most I expected the handbrake to be off. But it looked tight enough off the same mark, he's actually run to a much higher mark and probably would have still won if he had not been dropped at all this year.

Thats right Slicer and i did have a saver on him but everyone and there mothers knew what they were doing and yet the H'capper seem not to.

Anyone can get a 150-155 horse to a rating of 141, not hard to do.

But that was blatant cheating in my opinion.

no maeluk thats one of the reasons i dont back much in these races unless its certain trainers,what i have noticed  with this yard is they often go off at decent prices ,leu du sud ,jay jay reily for example

It's a big festival handicap. I think people need to get with the programme. Every handicap of the week has multiple entries whose recent form can be ignored.

If a horse has ulcers and it runs poorly then why should it get dropped, the ulcers are supposed to be the reason for the poor run which is a reason prohibiting the horse running on its true merit which means the handicapper has not seen a horse perform poorly due to its ability regressing... ergo the horse shouldn't be dropped.

If the sport wishes to attract more of an audience and "come racing" they deserve to know that the horse they back is running on it's merits and not being laid out for a race in 6 months time. Luckily for us who are racing nuts we know the goings on with certain stables but the not so initiated do not. That is cheating the public in my view.

But without the handicapper being complicit it wouldn't happen, Tony Martin didn't get the same break as Skelton did he?

the public are cheated by the powers that be /establishment every day of the week but we are  so used to it we dont notice it ! how many horses in that race  were laid out and ran on their merits all season ? langer dan wernt the only one !

Poor old Langer Dan been ill all season bleeding,ulcers, lame etc tumbled down to its last winning hcap mark..however last 3 weeks hasfelt much better…13/2 2nd fav and…wins… -it's a miracle......!

dan has a few in this with harry on the supposed 1st string and prob has a decnt chance ,i also like calico at a price for the yard back over hurdle after chasing and the good kid takes 3 pound off hopefull today is the day and a bit of luck in runni ng gonna back both .unexpected party and calico

As much as I dislike Chapman in fairness to him he said something similar this morning

stuck out like a sore thumb as potential fiddle, but just as many others that look like that get beat - of course it's a **** game - you always have to be taking that into account - as is always being said - no-one makes you play, I do believe, like some others that such OBVIOUS chicanery makes a mockery of the sport and must have put many potential punters off. I know I have friends who don't know the game well, but might have got involved if it wasn't quite so obviously bent.

Surely it makes punting easier if you can get 10/1 about a well in horse?

The Stewards noted the explanation given by Dan Skelton that having had a poor start to the winter campaign the gelding had been scoped and was found to have ulcers and had benefitted from having received treatment for the stomach ulcers on this occasion. Skelton further explained that LANGER DAN (IRE) had bled on his previous outing at Kempton, which had been reported. LANGER DAN (IRE) was routine tested.
