So buffoon, failed marriage and he's something that rhymes with banker?

Middle-aged white man obviously, in the world of telly ads.

Yes, George

And apart from that, I am surprised that they used that "banker" gag in the ad
Can imagine a few home counties retired couples closing their accounts over it

A blatant one (to Northerners at least) is Booking.com with the McGuiness fella. He always pronounces book like Luke, as someone from his birthplace would. But he changes (flattens) it markedly when he says 'booking genius'.
Quite unnatural, so certainly deliberate.

Saddo, agree, first time I heard it thought he was saying exactly that
Nearly spilt my cocoa

Advertising standards slipping, I feel a strongly worded letter to The Times is appropriate

Have you heard Cissie, ads not what they were!

Just read that the advert has now been banned, apparently not because of anything that was said in the opening post, but because  Nationwide was being economical with the truth about not closing branches.

The ad was poor and so was their new logo or identity. Nationwide arose from helping people to own their own home, but their new logo was so insignificant and non-descript that anyone not familiar with the Nationwide origin will not be able to identify Nationwide with "home building".

Nationwide has closed several branches near where I live, and the days of opening/business for some have reduced significantly eg from 5 1/2 days a week to just 3 days eg Monday, Tuesday and Thursday or Friday; most of these are shut on a saturday.
