Regulation in the Republic seeks to cap bets at €10 and winnings to €3,000

"This represents a blanket overhaul of the sector, and will fundamentally impact how people engage with lotteries, bingo, and sports betting, regardless of whether they gamble responsibly or not."

"Under the measures proposed in the Dail’s new Gambling Regulation Bill, punters, bingo players and those who enjoy the odd bet are in for drastic changes as the legislation intends to strictly limit the amount that individuals can both stake and win on any given bet."

This from the Irish Mirror:

https://www.irishmirror.ie/news/irish-news/10-cap-bets-drive-punters-32238370

A spokesman said: “This €10 cap will mean that an individual can only place a maximum of €10 on any given sports, casino or lottery bet. You won’t be able to place €50 on a horse to win or €20 on black in roulette for instance.

“Simultaneously, it means that you will only be able to win a maximum of €3,000 on any given bet, meaning that accumulators worth tens of thousands will be a thing of the past.

“This will mean radical changes for your everyday punter and puts the entire sector at jeopardy.”

Lottoland Ireland vice-president Mike Kirwan added: “The new measures in this legislation look set to undermine the Bill’s stated objective of harm prevention. They will only lead to the proliferation of black market gambling and punters will flock to Northern Ireland to avoid the win caps.”

I said a while back on a thread, after reading an article on Australian racing and plans afoot there to limit stakes, that the attack on gambling is a globalist policy.

That proposed policy in Ireland is just a variation of what is happening here.

I presume this is the same bill that RTV & SSR were threatening to cease broadcasting in Ireland over, because of the restrictions on advertising through the day.

So they're so concerned about gambling getting out of hand that they're gonna restrict your stake for your own good?

But hang on a tick, why the cap on winnings?

Agenda 2030 anyone?

For me it’s an easy solution to put right, just take horse racing out of the argument…..it’s being dragged into the mire with the arcade material…..

Remember a well known footballer/coach/manager I think it was Qater on a lucrative contract 65 large upfront and done it practically overnight…..and it wasn’t on horse racing…..lots of innocent friends and family paying the price……all arcade (allegedly)…
Report Trident • March 1, 2024 8:44 AM GMT

take horse racing out of the argument Never going to happen. Remember you can put £10 win on a horse at 5-1 Lose or Win. If you WIN , you could take that £60 to the slots.

Plus, 5F races are over in a few mins, and on saturdays, I could quickly see how this could become a problem to someone looking for their next gambling buzz.
Report Trident • March 1, 2024 8:50 AM GMT
And also, IMO, horse racing is a potential gateway into SLOTS and the CASINO. Remember, new Cheltenham and Grand National punters get offered FREE bets, they have never even bet on the horses. They then go right to the casino that night, win or lose. I would show you the stats if I could.
Report formoftheace • March 1, 2024 9:00 AM GMT
I can’t ever remember horse racing being responsible for a person having bad tendencies…..

Force the bookmakers and all other to get rid of all arcade material and go back to the old days….

Head to the casino if you like a spin….
Report formoftheace • March 1, 2024 9:04 AM GMT
I remember when the flashing light and noise material came into the shops….

One pillar in the centre of laddies with two at each side…

Manager saying this will one day be the downfall…..

A person punting £5 a time on the horses has just done £300 in two days on the machine….
Report longbridge • March 1, 2024 9:50 AM GMT
form - a minute or two of with google will find you plenty of stories of those who have got into serious difficult gambling on horses - much though I'd like to, I don't think we're able to say "racing betting is just a harmless pastime, please leave us out of this".
Report formoftheace • March 1, 2024 10:05 AM GMT
The arcade materiel is where the issue arose…..

Racecourse attendance was always bulging with punters enjoying the sport win or lose, never in my time I can remember a punter committing the dreadful because they lost a few quid.

Arcade material is not a sport and should be banned from any bookmakers….
Report Trident • March 1, 2024 10:30 AM GMT
"racing betting is just a harmless pastime. You're 100%  Correct, definitely not. Punters chase losses from race to race, too.
Report sparrow • March 1, 2024 10:35 AM GMT
Agree with longbridge. The idea that horse and greyhound punting can never result in problem gambling is completely wrong.
Report BoosterRooster • March 1, 2024 10:41 AM GMT
Don’t think anybody is saying that you can’t lose a lot of money on horses and dogs. Especially these days with a race off every 5 minutes.

Though you should be allowed to decide what your limits are for yourself. As with horses and dogs, you are at least contributing towards the sport. With slots and casino, you are not contributing to anything.

Nobody is saying that horses and dogs can’t be dangerous to addicts, they obviously are. But you are also more invested in the sport more than with other forms of gambling. Should we also stop people buying horses, just in case the horse is no good and they lose hundreds of thousands of pounds?

Just let people decide for themselves.

they would've been picked up straight away by the bookies, but instead of being limited to buttons (like anyone with half a clue is) they were targeted as main clients.  invited to hospitality, and royally fleeced.

the bookies know exactly who should be subject to AC's, they have lists of names.  Same as they have lists of names of people who they won't allow within a mile of a bet with them, quite a few probably reading this.

thats what i heard on the main irish news.
i can not tell you where the irish mirror got their story but it is the complete opposite to what i heard, and complete opposite to what i am reading on this thread.
