I know you could argue loyalty, but I think Woods is lucky to just walk back into the job. Jones by far the better jock of the two. I would hope some of the owners who have benefitted would still use Jones.

It would be disappointing if Jones is now back to where he was before the Pauling link. You have a similar situation with Hobbs where Jones is better than Nolan.

horses don't jump well for woods
they hang, they pull & his judge of pace is crap imo
and he's in the bottom 5% on the figs to validate the eye test

I backed the winner there but if Jones had've been on the other one I would've backed that instead.
Report wondersobright March 9, 2024 2:15 PM GMT
you have full grasp of pauling situation imo
Report differentdrum March 14, 2024 4:26 PM GMT
Really pleased for Jones to get that Festival winner.

Always in a good position, and love the way he committed at the last two fences. Any mistake and he might have been in trouble.
Report tomo1984 March 14, 2024 4:43 PM GMT
I have felt for a while that he will be stable number one at Paulings soon enough.

And that could be a very good job over the next few years, as Ben seems to be one of the guys who is getting a lot of the nice young horses that escape the clutches of Mullins and to a lesser extent Gordie.

didn't sound like that when pauling appeared on LOS the other week, he was doubling down on woods if anything

I hope you're right tho

whip comes out & booting clear near chase track 2 out
on heavy with the hill...that's FAR too early
Report the dealer March 15, 2024 3:03 PM GMT
He didn't do a lot wrong and gave it every chance. It was a very decent effort imho

Ride of the week a bit OTT
Report wondersobright March 15, 2024 3:05 PM GMT
horse was going so well near chase track 2 out you do not kick then & the whip shouldn't even be close to being seen
Report formoftheace March 15, 2024 3:05 PM GMT

Report sageform March 15, 2024 3:08 PM GMT
Can't remember many years when so many races had 10 horses in contention after the second last but by the line they were spread over 50 lengths or more. That hill has always sorted them out but surely never as much as this year.
Report Theoneandonly March 15, 2024 3:08 PM GMT
Shame he got the last wrong. Like you guys say seems strange pulling the whip out and booting him early on to only try and pop the last.

If he'd have gone for a big one at the last could understand it but to shove him on then lose a lot of momentum by just popping the last probably cost him.

yep

2nd didnt jump the last any better, idled up the run-in and caught final stride

sit and wait you would ask why not kick on? boot on and try to steal an advantage and the guy is nearly crucified!

Damned if you do damned if you dont!
Report Cider March 15, 2024 3:11 PM GMT
He saw he was clear on the screen hence opting for safety first at the last. Of course that's what everyone said Moore should have done on Goshen.

My quibble would be that he could have brought him to the outside instead of being in acres of real estate on his own.
Report Ibrahima Sonko March 15, 2024 3:12 PM GMT
He might had pinged the last and folded sooner, think people are being to critical.
Report 1st time poster March 15, 2024 3:14 PM GMT
whether it was jump at last or stamina but looking at horses stride the eventual  winner was going 2 to the 2nds one up the hill, would have won 5 lgth in another 50 yds
Report Theoneandonly March 15, 2024 3:15 PM GMT
He got the fractions absolutely spot on before that regardless and just very unlucky. Hate to see horses lead all the way like that apart from on the line
Report wondersobright March 15, 2024 3:17 PM GMT

yep, too much time to think about it I'd say, would have been better off with something on his tail at the last. thems the breaks, got 90% of it spot on.

evidently not as he was beat. far worst rides this week like JK dawdling around on a thorough stayer with probably a stone in hand and getting outsprinted.

Report differentdrum March 17, 2024 7:18 PM GMT
It looks to me that Tom Bellamy who was preferred to Jones at the Lavelle yard appears to have also taken the Ben Clarke job away from Jones. And people ask the question what's wrong with out trainers. Eyesight might be a starting point.
